For those of us in Vic it's $175 per fuel (up to $350). My contracts are about due to expire so will be comparing shortly. From memory AGL were an absolute rip off though.

    • +3

Your memory aint wrong - they are a ripoff.

    • Where do you see this? I dont see anything for my address in Melbourne.

    • +1

Yep can confirm 100% rip. Was with AGL previously for both gas and electricity, moved retailers and saving ~$50 per month on average now.

    • +1

AGL's excellent for me with an electric car.

      90c/day supply charge

      8c/KWh 12am - 6am

      25c/KWh 6am - 12am

I load shift as much as I can (dishwasher / washing machine / dryer / heat pump hot water) to the 12am-6am period along with the electric car charging.

The peak 25c/KWh rate isn't much worse than the best price I can get from other retailers that don't offer the overnight discount. The very cheapest plan available to me according to Vic Govt energy compare is Lumo, which charges 79c/day supply and 22c/KWh round the clock.

      • Do we need to have electric car to get that AGL plan you have?

        8c/KWh 12am - 6am sounds cheap

Also since u have electric car, assume u have solar panels. So would it be more economical to run the heat pump hot water during the middle of the day?

Edit: oh might be the same, if facotring opportunity cost

        • Requirements for the EV plan -

Our Night Saver EV plan is only available to customers who drive an EV. You’ll be considered an EV driver if you or a member of your household owns an EV, has an AGL EV subscription, or has an EV registered in the name of a business to which you or a member of your household have an association. See full conditions for details.

If you've got solar panels, its generally more economical to run all your load on solar - the savings are when you can load shift your usage to use the sun. Especially with feed-in tariffs so low (less than 10c most of the time these days), you're better off using the electricity from solar to power your appliances (instead of buying the electricity from the grid at 20+c/kw). Heat pumps are more efficient anyway, but why pay to power the heat pump when you can use the solar?

          • @aragornelessar: Thanks

            Oh need ev

Yes heat pump is more efficient. I think i read it uses 1kwh to power the equivalent of 4kwh on a normal water heater

When i said opportunity cost. I was referring to the cost of roughly 7c that you miss from potential FIT when the heat pump uses solar completely

            • +1

@ATTS: Hey mate, I'm on the EV night plan, sign up online, they never check or ask if you have an EV…

              • @xavster: Hey mate, thanks

Just cautious they com3 back in future saying you didnt have ev, and then asked to pay everything back at the general rate

            • @ATTS: You do miss out on the 7c credit if you use the solar, but you're not paying 20c+ when you use the heat pump without solar though so you're ahead using the kw/h of electricity generated rather than buying the kw/h. That's always been my understanding. When the FIT was more than the cost to buy electricity is when you'd want to be exporting the solar to the grid

              • @aragornelessar: Yes you are right, thanks

                When i said similar, i meant 8c/KWh 12am - 6am vs 7c opportunity cost

Just curious your heat pump, only takes maximum 4 hours a day to heat ( from empty)?

But when heating(top up) daily its less than 4 hours a day?

                • @ATTS: Not sure how long our heat pump takes to be honest, I just set it on timer for when the sun is about generally and it never goes fully empty

      • -6

Sounds like you’re talking about “Controlled Load” for the 8c/KWh rate. I’m sorry to tell you that only appliances that are hard wired into the controlled load meter will get that rate (such as overnight hot water).

So unless you have a smart metre (which would be three tariffs: peak, off-peak and shoulder) then only your hot water gets the 8c rate and everything else is getting charged at 25c, even if it’s running between midnight and 6am

Sorry to be bearer of bad news!

        • +6

So much confidence, yet so wrong.

You can still get a smart meter with a single rate and not TOU (I know because I'm on one).

As for the AGL EV rate, it is not related to the controlled load rate. Here's the excerpt from the plan for your reference

          https://www.agl.com.au/residential/energy/compare-plans/ener…

          Single rate tariff
If you’re on a single rate tariff you can sign up to our Night Saver EV plan, provided you have a digital meter. You’ll get the Night Saver EV rate from 12am *-6am and keep a single general usage rate at all other times of the day. *

The general usage will depend on where you live. To view the general usage rate for your address, see the above 'Our Rates’ section.

          Time of Use (TOU) tariff
If you’re already on a TOU tariff, you can still sign up to our Night Saver EV plan. Your existing TOU tariff usage windows will remain, outside of the 12am -6am Night Saver EV rate. These times depend on where you live, and who your network distributor is.

          Controlled load tariff
Our 12am-6am Night Saver EV rate does not apply to controlled load usage.

          • @aragornelessar: So my hot water is on control load. Does that mean if i switch to the AGL plan you have my hot water would be charged the general rate of 25c p kwh instead if 8c?

            Controlled load tariff
Our 12am-6am Night Saver EV rate does not apply to controlled load usage.

            • @ATTS: Yeah that'd be my understanding of it. I haven't had a controlled load for ages. Whether you'd keep that controlled load when you switch will probably depend on the available AGL plans with your distributor, cause they like to play mickey with all sorts in different locations

              • @aragornelessar: Ok thanks

If removed control would have to rewire? I think the control load and the general usage use a different ( dunno the word , circuit??)

                • @ATTS: Yeah you could be right about that, it would make sense. Like I said, I haven't had a controlled load for a very long time so I'm not sure about how it's set up

          • @aragornelessar: Hi, which state are you in?

I'm in NSW and I was told by our electricity relailer that AusGrid would not allow any accounts with a smart meter to move to a non TOU tariff. But if you're in NSW with AusGrid too, please let us know so I can try to move tariffs again. Thank you!

            • @arunda: Just wanted to see an example for TOU tariff what is the peak and off peak rate

Vs the singular/ flat general usage tariff

            • @arunda:

Hi, which state are you in?

I'm in NSW, but not with Ausgrid - we're in with Endeavour, so you might be out of luck :(

      • How do you take advantage of this transfer offer, and sign up to the EV plan ?
I am in NSW, and I can get $225 per fuel, but it looks like it is transferring to a standard plan, rather than an EV plan with the 8c tariff.

        • I think this deal is only $225 for value saver plan?

        • Sign up to value saver, get credit, switch online to EV night plan.

This is what I did, earlier this year, the credit was only 150$ back in March.

  • I moved to them prior to fin year for other bonus. That means if I move my gas, it’s only $50?

    • Me too. Only $50 was offered at end of June.

    • Me too in June but connection not completed due to billing circle. Chatted online and rep cancelled the old transfer and offered $225 credit on the same plan.
      Thanks OP.

      • exactly the same here 👍

  • +6

So, are there any ozbargainers that just churn retailers after using up these signup credits? Is that a worthwhile use of time?

    • +1

      yes

    • yes

    • Yes

    • +16

Yep. Haven't paid utility bills for nearly 2 years now.

      Not worth getting solar yet

Just got my simply energy bill from the $200 credit deal 3 months ago and am in $40 credit but I've already switched to AGL where I have $740 Credit and estimated bill is $170 based on usage. Add on that credit the quarterly $75 government energy payout. Also gas should have about $410 credit remaining

      • How do ya rack up a $740 credit ?…..switch back and forth multiple times while not using all the credit, which somehow rolls over when you switch back, is all i can fathom… ?

        • +1

Nah they applied a promo credit twice and I didn't mention anything. Then they transferred more promo credit from the other energy account when I transferred to simply energy

          • @easternculture: when you rejoined AGL, you used same email - just wondering how did they map your old credit to new account?

            • @babyTiger: I just moved gas. Still had electricity. So they moved whatever I had credit left on gas to my electricity account

    • +1

      yup every quarter
my last elec bill was $91 and gas $70 with energy aus ($100 credit on each)
just signed up with this deal

      • +3

        So why you Negging

        • read my last comment p2

    • Maybe not if you are on $200 an hour else yes…

    • +1

No. Some do credit checks etc

      • Explain how…

        • how what?

          • @realaccount627465746: How they do a credit check? 🤷🏻

            • @BargainMe: All Energy providers check the credit, aren't they?
I know Energy Australia is the only provider that didn't check if you applied for a second account or subsequence second address before moving etc..

              • @thsydney: Which means even if we used to have an account with them, and then get back (let’s say after 4 months), they will still do another credit check?

            • @BargainMe: they give your details to experian/ilion/equifax and get back a credit report

    • +2

Have churned regularly for all least four years now and haven’t outlaid more than $300 for electricity annually for a family of three.

      • How do you keep a track of the credit and when to churn next? Do you wait for the bill or just churn in the middle of the billing cycle? Thanks

      • Any tips for first timer?

Also have u ever experienced troubles with credit check?

I think another user on ozb attributed failed credit check due to churning?

    • +2

Use to be, but credit took a massive hit after churning 6 times in a year. If you don't see yaself needing any credit in the next couple years should be fine but at a point even the utility companies will start rejecting you due to all the enquiries

    • +2

Haven't paid for electricity in years.

$150+ incentives from Retailers (& ~$150 Econnex Woolies Gift Cards) for switching every few months
      It's quite profitable💰

Tariff differences isn't as important when switching every 2-3 months!

Plus Qld Govt rebate ($1k this year)
      & $300 from commonwealth…
What rebate is remaining is returned to my bank account each time I switch electricity retailers.

      • +1

Cries in NSW, can we have some of them rebates?

    • +2

Is that a worthwhile use of time?

Remembering you'll get the ozb'ners that spend three hours to save $5. YMMV.

      • Have regularly switched electricity retailers for years.
Takes minutes for $200-$300 each time. Done 3-6 times a year.
A nice hourly rate when doing nothing else.

        • Curious, which retailers were u switching between?

          • @ATTS: Depends on the available Deals.
Switched from Powershop to Origin last week for $200 & discounted tarrif.
Tariff doesn't matter much when the incentives are large.

            • @INFIDEL: Thanks

Fomo, should have done that earlier

              • @ATTS: It's easy.
Powershop offered $150 credit + Econnex $150 Woolies gift cards.
                Origin offered $200 credit
Usually the credit pays my bills until switch retailers again.

                • @INFIDEL: Oh I see thanks!

Any issues with credit check btw?

                  • @ATTS: I am never affected. They check you will pay - as people can run up large bills.

                    • @INFIDEL: Thanks

                      • @ATTS: *Have an excellent credit score & don't need to borrow.
                        Consider your own conditions.

                    • @INFIDEL: energy australia do a credit check then deny me, i otherwise have good credit

i think they're checking for churners

                      • @realaccount627465746: They're checking if people have a history of not paying. No business wants to lose money when they offer credit.

                        • @INFIDEL: You mean if they were issued default payments? That cause failed credit check

                          • @ATTS: No idea. I pay my bills with credits, so don't default.

                            • @INFIDEL: Thanks

Strange, so the only culprit for failed credit check is churning in your situation?

Curious has anyonelse who churns had failed credit checks?

                              • @ATTS: Never had a failed credit check!
My credit score has been unchanged over years of electricity retailer & Telco churning!
Don't know why my score is over 900 - "you have an exceptional credit history."

                      • @realaccount627465746: Oh i see. Btw did EA say why the deny you after credit check?

                        Edit

Also did that mean u stopped churning

                • @INFIDEL: I am still waiting for my first bill since almost 3 months now. when do you decide to switch - before even you get first bill?

                  • @babyTiger: Am not with AGL.
My bills are always monthly based on Smart Meter.

        • Don't most of the companies only allow you to get a deal from them once? How do you get around that?

          • +2

@Rodo: I think they prob perfectly time the churn between several retailers. Usually the terms is once per 12 month period i think for the sign up bonus

          • +1

@Rodo: As there are many electricity retailers offering incentives from time to time, just churn from 1 to next, returning again when t&c allow (often once per year).

Been with Powershop 3 times in 3 years. Each time they create a new account - using same details. (Discovered that when something needed to be changed - they changed old account. Staff were very helpful & was quickly resolved.)

Rang Origin last week: although I received a credit & Woolies Rewards points worth $125 exactly a year ago, it is a different offer. So met t&c.
Am considered a new customer as am rejoining. Used different email & phone number - otherwise system would put me on old account. That was recommended in the online sign up!

    • I'm looking do do so. $200 credit with Origin, projected $196 bill for the 3 months.
Provided Origin aren't bad (Energymadeeasy.gov.au is down atm) I'll look at swapping

      • What other companies you churning between? Noticed u were in nsw

        • I've been with AGL, Globird, Powershop, and now Origin. i'll look into this deal as well. This is all in 3 years of owning my home.
Most of the time it's when i get a rate rise email I'll start looking.

  • +1

I currently have a credit with AGL. Does anyone know if they refund the credit if I switch to a new provider? If so, I can switch providers and then return to AGL for this offer.

    • +4

They do. They even refunded the gov energy rebate credits I received when I switch to the other retailer.

      • Did they refund to your bank account? I'm currently with Origin and having issues with them. They're denying my request for refund of gov't credits. As soon 1st July came, my balance read $1100+, so I requested a refund. They emailed the next day asking for proof of ownership of bank account I'm requesting refund to be paid into. A few days later I asked for an update. They've now said "they're unable to process gov't rebates. I can process a refund of $118… I think". Legit stated "I think" in the email. I think they're trying to pull a fast one, so I've contacted the Ombudsman to make a complaint. Anyone else have any experience with this? Thanks

    • what's a good offer to churn out to?

      • Just sign up with the new supplier, they move the contract. You will get emails from your exisiting supplier with balance.

        • i was looking for a recommendation for another bill credit or cashback

        • Oh never new that

  • +4

    should note the condition of
AGL may exclude accounts from receiving more than one upfront credit per fuel in any 12-month period

    • use a different name and mobile number

      • Is that how they check? Or is it smarter by using address?

        • +1
