120

Another new release coming to stan on top of Arcadia (2023) with Nicolas Cage (which is available to stream 20th July).

Synopsis
The commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Hoss, and his wife Hedwig, strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp. Winner of two Academy Awards including Best International Feature Film.

some people hate A24 movies I get it but some people might want to watch it. I might give it a watch one day if there is nothing else.

themes of German concentration camps and World war 2 just so you know.

I recognized the woman in the Zone picture, Sandra Huller from the movie "Anatomy of a Fall" which I have watched and is also on Stan right now (also a new release). it was ok a bit mature and over my head.

People who hate A24 films also have an aversion to intelligence and nuance

  • Couldnt finish this, it was immensely boring.

    • yeah kinda what I expect and why it’s not on my list to watch tbh.

what is my kind of movie? hard to say sometimes I feel like some type of type of action blockbuster.

these are going to be all from Netflix because I just finished a month subbed to Ad tier. but out of most recently watched enjoyed these.
      • Leave the world behind
      • The Yellow Birds
      • Sand castle
      • The Hater (Polish)

Some pointers to get the most out of this one.

    • Turn up the volume. Preferably surround sound or headphones if possible. I’ve never seen a film that was so completely altered by ambient sound.
    • Prepare for a feeling and experience more than a story.
    • Don’t expect to feel happy or satisfied afterward. Even the director nearly bailed on this one, until he found one little ray of light to cling to.

For all that it’s a beautiful made film, utterly unique and arguably more relevant now than ever.

    • Yep the sound design plays a massive part in this film. I thought it was just ok, felt a little overdone at times trying to push the point of how detached the family was from what was going on next door.

    • This is a good call. I watched it with good headphones. The sound is immersive and at times disturbing.

I think it's hard to say I enjoyed this movie because of the subject matter but its an excellent piece of film making and I'm glad I watched it.

I saw this at the cinema, it was a very boring and monotonous watch. At 1 hour and 45 minutes long, I couldn't sit through it.

  • I thought this was a strong film, and so unsettling given it has few overt visual triggers. You do need to invest yourself into the movie - it's minimalist and deliberately matter-of-fact. Loads of symbolism which I probably missed on first viewing. Definitely a film I'll watxh again some day. There is zero "entertainment value" in it however.

Been out on Blu-ray for a few weeks

Still yet to see it, but it makes me a little sad that announcements of upcoming streaming releases take hard priority over physical now
