CHOICE review April 2024, Beko BDPB904HW Dryer review, 9kg Price $1599. CHOICE Expert Rating 67 %,
Cost per load 70c, Cycle time (to dry 3.5kg) 208 min, Measured energy used/load 1.72 kWh,
Good points• Very good energy performance• Has extra dry program• Has woollens program• Has delay time• Has child lock controls,
Bad points• Poor drying time• Relatively long cycle time,

        • Truly do not understand this….. maybe they had a bad machine. I reset my stats on Home Assistant the other day so can only go back a few weeks, but the average cycle time for my BDPB904HW dryer has been 95 mins, and that is running the general mix cycle (an about half full, with towels etc) and drying level 3 (so one more step above the standard level 2). Last 4 cycles has used 2.7kWh.

I'm super curious. I might weigh the next load I put on and see what happens.

          • @PlasticSpaceman: …and the results are in. Four large bath towels, and one tea towel. Total wet/damp weight over 4kg. "General mix" cycle, dry setting 3. Initial estimate for the cycle was 2:05 ie 125 mins. Actually took 91 mins. Everything came out nice and dry. Total power used (measured by an Aeotec zwave switch) was 0.702kWh. I get paid $0.054 per kWh for power fed back into the grid from my solar panels, so effectively it cost me about $0.04.

After the cycle finished, I realised it's been a few months since I last checked the condenser and it needed cleaning - so it probably would have been even better had I done that first!

      Who was number 1 ?

I'm about to buy a new dryer and it's really difficult to get a sense of who makes quality. We have a few Bosch appliances which are great but their series 8 heat pump dryer has shocking reviews.
I spent an hour yesterday going through all the brands and there's no consistency with reviews.

        LG DVH5-08W.

Can send the report too if you want.

        • Keen to get the report if you're willing to share! Looking to buy one but it's hard to figure out which model to get

          • @jooncheez: I'd chuck it on a file sharing site but I imagine there are copywrite issues so will have to email instead. PM me your email if you would like it. Offer open to anyone else who wants it too.

@Ham Dragon: My apologies I was unaware the reports are so large sorry.

@Makka: 27 machines tested. The washing machine one is about the same. I don't mind emailing people if they want a specific review, I usually chuck the "best of" one (11 pages) in as well. Doesn't take more than a minute. I've sent 20 something since Friday. Interestingly, only 4 people bothered to say thanks 🙄

      • Posted this a few minutes ago, pretty good deal for the best rated dryer (assuming you live near Sydney!)

Kinda surprising as I bought this exact same model 6 months ago, and find it's been perfectly fine. As with all condenser machines, and this replaced an Asko that had died of old age, you need to be aware of moisture in the air - so try to avoid running it in an enclosed room. I'm sure that Choice tested them in the same conditions, so I find it strange assuming it was being compared to other condenser machines. I do find I need to select one notch up on the dryness setting as the standard setting leaves a little too much moisture for my liking, but otherwise all good. Oh, when it starts the length of time it provides on the screen is usually longer than it actually takes - that initial estimate adjusts and reduces as the cycle progresses. Again, it varies depending on the weather but for the most part, I find that my washing machine does finish its normal cycle (about 90 mins) before the dryer finishes a load, but not by much.

If you're in a hurry, it has a hybrid "Express Dry" option that basically means - at the expense of using more power - it uses a combination of condenser and old school electric heating to dry clothes faster. Plus it hooks into Home Assistant so I can see how the drying is going, for that added bit of excitement, as well as get alerts when it's finished.

It's not perfect, but it's definitely not a bad machine.

  • I was close to buying this dryer over the Haier 9kg Heat Pump dryer. I ended up going the Haier because of the positive reviews. Still takes 2 hours to dry most things. Apparently this is a Heat Pump Dryer thing as it uses less energy, but takes longer.

Kinda. A heat pump dryer is a type of condenser dryer. Very roughly speaking, condenser dryers pass warm air through clothes and over the fins of a heat sink, allowing water to condense and get collected/drained away. Heat pump dryers generally use cooler air than standard condenser dryers, but have refrigerant gas to help with condensing water and recycling heated air that makes them more power efficient. A generalisation, but they can be slower to dry clothes than a non-heat pump condenser dryer which is in turn slower to dry clothes than a conventional dryer.

Two hours or so to dry a load with a condenser/heat pump is pretty typical, although there are ways to ensure it can dry as quickly as possible. That includes using a decent high spin cycle with the washing machine (to remove as much water as possible from clothes before drying), don't overload the dryer, make sure that the room is well ventilated (to reduce recirculating already damp air in the dryer), and keep the filters & condenser fins clean.

  • For this price I think there are better options than beko

    • Please share some. I have ordered this dryer and on wait list.

We got a Bosch series 6 something for $1100 or so. Great dryer fairly quiet, doesn't take too long, and clothes come out looking nice and gently treated. But still new so can't comment on quality (but a sample of 1 is useless for statistics.

        • How long does a drying cycle take, on average?

          • +1

@soan papdi: Loose and low-water items (underwear etc) seem to be done in about 1.5h for about a 3kg load?). A semi-loose high water load (towels) at mostly full, 6kg or so takes 3-4h. And a high water non-loose load (sheets/doonah, etc) takes 4h and needs to be opened and unfolded half way to dry properly.

Realistically there are a lot of factors in this analysis 😅

            • @incipient: Thanks, this is lot longer than I expected. It's not suited to those who run the wash once a week then.

              • @soan papdi: I found it to be about the same as an LG I had.

I also don't use the 'fast' mode as I prefer to be gentler on clothes (and power bills haha).

Some Beko units are actually similar to Bosch however. Beko manufactures for Bosch I read once here. It depends on the model. I have one of the Beko units with a 5 year warranty and I'm very happy with the performance and it's super cheap to run.

Got a difference Beko model 7kg heat pump dryers for around 3 years, so far so good. Never call for service or had any problems, so no idea what their call center or service like. Still has 2 years warranty on the dryer and hopefully no need to call for 10 years.

    • How long does a drying cycle take, on average?

      • +2

Mine 90mins to 130mins, depends the water in the clothes. My Beko is 7kg Heat Pump not this one,
