Hopefully by 2028 train will be available going to/from the Airport.

    • +1

The project was put on hold because the state is broke, so no chance.

      • +11

too broke for a train line but have billions of dollars for endless highways

      • +17

no its not because of that, its because of the continuous lobbying by the Melbourne Airport to get an underground train station instead of an feasible and cheaper above-ground train station so that they can still mint millions from parking fees. This is what happens when you go around privatizing everything. Critical Infrastructure should remain with the government not some private individuals.

      • How can they be broke? They spent so much on useless stuff

        • +5

That is exactly how one becomes broke.

    • +17

Worst part of going to Melbourne is getting to and from the airport. The real ones take the $4 bus to Broadmeadows and get the train from there, if you can find the remote carpark location where Melbourne Airport put the bus bays.

      • ooooh, i need this. this is the real ozbargain

        • +3

It’s actually super easy; it’s the 901 and you’ll find it at the back of the undercover carpark past terminal 4.

      • +2

I taken the 901 regular bus before (fee = regular myki), it just takes forever but it will take you to terminal 4. As a regular bus there's no special area for luggage but when I took it, it wasn't too crowded.

        • +1

Takes forever? 15 minutes tops from the bus bay at the airport to Broadmeadows station. Well-known and well-used by country passengers on the North-East railway line. The bus bay is a bit of a hike from the international terminal though.

          • +1

@Boodek: Ah sorry I was taking the 901 bus from Epping

        The weather

    • You know it's sad when Perth will get a rail service to it's airport quicker than melbourne!

      • +7

Will probably be quicker to build a rail line between Perth Airport and Melbourne Airport than Melb Airport and Melb CBD :(

    • +1

even when it's eventually built it's be crazy expensive like the Sydney one; if you have two or more people it's cheaper to taxi to the closest train station and then train (even cheaper to bus or walk to the nearest station)

OTOH it avoids traffic so sometimes it's worth it

      • +4

In Brisbane if you have 2 or more it's cheaper to directly taxi to the airport itself.

Privatised public transport is a joke, but Australian politicians absolutely love it.

        • +2

Yes.. I keep gocards with a balance of >$5 in a drawer just for the trips to the airport and back when I go by myself. Uber if two or more.

      • +1

It is just a ripoff to tourists and travelers. Others courtiers just charges regular fare for train to airport., Singapore, Japan, Thailand….

    • Can Tullamarine do the same thing London Heathrow has done where they have a $5~ extra fee just for hopping on a train there?

    • Skybus will still be cheaper and faster (outside peak hour).

      • For 2 or more people travelling together a Didi can be cheaper and more direct than Skybus.

      • Why do you reckon it'll be cheaper? They might go the Perth way and make it a standard fare to the airport.

        • They announced a while ago it will be special pricing.

    • Perhaps by 2038, more likely.

    • Never going to happen, The Melbourne airport operators will make sure of that, they love thier car park revenues too much.

Does this code work for the helicopter service from Southbank to the Airport?

  • +1

    Thanks mate, bought two.

save even more if you identify as a child :)

  • +4

Once upon a time, ~$32 was the normal price for a return SkyBus trip.

Oh well.. thanks for this! This is ever so slightly cheaper than NRMA as well ($34, or 15%).

    • +2

Yep.. what can you do when they hold the monopoly!

  • Thanks. Going away in 3 weeks

The real OzBargain is using Myki on PT instead of the rip off Skybus.

Just set the destination as "Melbourne Airport/Grants Rd" in Google Maps.

The bus stop is in an undercover carpark only 2 minutes walk from T4 or about 5 minutes walk from T3, T2 or T1.

Don't set the destination as, for example, "Qantas, Terminal 1 Departure Dr" in Google Maps or it will gaslight you with directions for a roundabout 16 minute walk from the 901 at the "Melbourne Airport/Grants Rd" bus stop, which in reality is more like 5 minutes.

Often the trip planners also add unnecessary padding of 10+ minutes for changing trains at Parliament when in reality there is usually a much quicker change available and it only takes seconds to walk from platform 4 to 3.

In reality, the alternative to Skybus doesn't take as long as the search results suggest as they seem to be padded out with silly directions.

    • +1

I've done this before, but only when I've had a lot of time to spare in either direction. It really depends on where you're coming from (and when your flights are) if it's worth it.. the bus to/from Broadmeadows doesn't come as often as the Skybus (and the trains to/from Broadmeadows for that matter) does.

    • +1

Yes, I use this 75% of the time - Skybus for when time is tight.

      • Times when it's not right:
        - earlier than 7am / 8am Sundays
        - later than 11:30pm
        - a large group
        - lots of luggage

        • +2

          a large group

Uber would be cheaper, in fact uber is much cheaper to CBD for 3/4 pax normally.

  • Code also works in the app for 10 trip tickets.

    • Do you know if you’re able to share the 10 trip tickets? Could be good for couples/families travelling together

      • +1

I don’t believe so, when I tried to get them to scan for my partner they refused - potentially there is work around if the other person just shows a screenshot but I didn’t try

        • I'd like to know too. I'll have 2 trips left after next month. They expire on the 8th August. The 2 are from an unexpected cancelled trip, otyherwise they would have been used.

          • +1

@Trekky: They have in the past been very relaxed about extending expiry over the phone. However this must be requested prior to expiry, they can't do anything after the expiry date.

            Worth a try.

    • Are the 10 single way trips only valid for 3 months too? The app doesn't say any expiry date

      • When I bought mine last year - it said 12 months. I have the app too and tells me the exact date.

  • +1

    Awesome OP!

The coupon doesn't work via the web or app :(

    • Yeah, just tried it and it didn't work

Is the code still working ?
I am getting invalid code now

  • +1

Excellent! Now instead of a massive rip-off, the Skybus will now be just a big rip-off! Thanks for the code though. Any discount is a good discount.

    • It's not a rip-off when you consider an Uber can be up to $100 one way (surge/peak pricing).

  • -1

Surely this is not a "Deal" True ozbargainers Take the Broady Train then catch the 901 bus all for $5.30. Sky's Operators are just as bad as the drug cartels holding the citizens to ransom.

    • For those times where the PTV alternative is not an option

      • The first Service is from 4:50 am and the last Service 11:41 PM from Broady so unless you are travelling outside those times there is no excuses for getting reamed by the skybus and Melbourne Airport operators.

Also why isn't Metro/PTV pushing this service in thier marketing, instead we see stupid marketing posters all over flinders street and southern cross that are just fluff pieces that add no value….I wonder why?
