Sorry this is the Switch Lite

    • +1

Kinda hope someone will do this lol

    • still better than a light switch

I bought this the other week at this price, and while it is a gigabit 8-port switch, I probably would have preferred to spend a little more (e.g. one of the 'metal' switches for about $25-30).

    • there are no activity lights on the front for each port
    • it's very small
    • it's so small there is no room for the power cable on the rear where every other switch has it positioned, so there is a socket on the side which makes it impossible to organise your cables and switch neatly

So, it's cheap and it switches network packets, but that's about it.

    • it's so small there is no room for the power cable on the rear where every other switch has it positioned, so there is a socket on the side which makes it impossible to organise your cables and switch neatly

Huh… that would be very annoying.

    • Could you please link to the metal switch you mentioned?

This one is the highest reviewed, but it's also $44 for 5 ports

Have a couple of them lying around gathering dust. Can confirm they work as intended but likely no better or worse than the OP model

  • +2

I have a couple of those running a few years. They just work, set and forget.

There's also a buy 2 to get another 10% price reduction offer on it.

    • Tapo C110 is on sale for $35 before further 10% discount.
      Good buy I think.

i think this deal was around a few weeks ago rofl.

      Why so funny?

  • Someone's going to chime in and ask why people still need physical cables instead of teh wifis.

    • +7

For one reason. WiFi is slower than Ethernet. WiFi is only half duplex whereas Ethernet is full duplex which means WiFi can't both transmit and send data packets at the same time that Ethernet can. So performance is slower and you will never get the actual rated speed with WiFi in real world performance. And it's also not susceptible to radio signal interference. You always get the rated full speed with Ethernet and no dropouts.

      • +2

Moreover, until wifi 7 each device on the same channel receives the message and randomly waits for transmission.
More devices (even on your neighbours' wifi, but on the same channel) cause more interference and slower the speed.
WiFi7 introduces steams but its limited to the number of antennas on your router and you need both router and client to support it.

Perhaps I should have included the (what I thought was implicitly obvious) "/s."

    Is the POE compatible?

  • Anyone have a recommendation for something with POE? I acquired one from work but it's 48 port and I don't need the noise or heat in my tiny network cupboard. 8 ports should be enough.

    • Been using the rackmountable ones from tp link for a few years for our IP phones and it's fine

    • +1

TP-Link have several "fanless" 8 port switches with POE. I personally use the 2 below, which are from the "business" range, as they come with metal cases & activity/fault lights. They have been super reliable (had the first one for 2 years+) and am using them to power IP cameras and an access point.

      TL-SG1008P (8 port, 4 POE, unmanaged)
      TL-SG108PE (8 port, 4 POE+, managed)

You can get these for between $85-95 at Amazon and others.

There is also a 5 port, 4 POE version.

I'd avoid any which are not gigabit these days, although you will still find them available in some stores.

Does management give anything helpful for poe?

        • A managed switch provides features like VLANs, quality of service prioritisation and additional security config. (Useful for more demanding setups). It doesn’t impact the POE provision itself. POE switches usually have built-in prioritisation to ensure they stay within the stated “power budget” across the POE ports.

  • Anyone have any recommendations for a cheap PoE powered gigabit switch? Don't need passthrough PoE for downstream clients. Can't find anything other than the Unifi Flex and nanoswitch, but they're not cheap.

    • You don't say how many ports you need, but there are many reasonably affordable TP-Link PoE switches on Amazon, like this one. Or try Aliexpress.

I don't think you're going to get near the price of non-PoE switches, however.
