IKEA TRÅDFRI Zigbee Wireless Motion Sensor $5 (Was $25) + Delivery ($5 C&C, $0 C&C with $50 Order/ in-Store) @ IKEA

910

Found from doom-scrolling through IKEA's 70% off sale items.

Works great with home assistant. Ikea claims it works well with their own TRÅDFRI gateway too.

They seem to be clearing out this entire range to make room for their new range of smart sensors: https://www.ikea.com/global/en/newsroom/innovation/parasoll-…

thanks for doing the hard yards!

  • So I connect to my existing zeimsmart hub and use them isnt?

    • +5

It's a Zigbee sensor, so should work with most Zigbee hubs I'm guessing. I've only tried with home assistant (it can be auto-discovered in HA)

      • Thanks @happy-reference

        Anyone else with experience?

        • Yep have Ikea sensor, on/off switches and symfonisk volume controllers running on my HA running a Sonoff Zigbee stick. Initially couldn't get them attached and had to update my Sonoff stick to make them work. They were bought in Japan but don't think that makes any difference. (Yep went all the way to Japan to buy Swedish products)

        • Can confirm connectivity - have one connected to ZHA with a SkyConnect as the coordinator.

      • +1

Can this connect to Philips Hue?

        • Hue is Zigbee based also, so should work although if you're concerned I'd suggest seeking advise from those with experience. Even though Zigbee is an open protocol there are implementation nuances that can cause issues (anecdotally).

          • @Chandler: No, hue bridge only with hue mostly.

            • @lgacb08: I have Ikea lights connected to my hue bridge 🤷🏻‍♂️

              • @Olli: Lights, yes, but the sensor, no.

It is sort of possible to use the Tradfri sensor with the bridge, but its functionality is severely limited and not worth the fartarsing around. Either use the genuine Hue sensor if all you have is the brdige, or utilise something like HA or Homekit if you are desperate to use the Ikea sensors.

For anyone else curious, it uses 2x 2032 batteries (included) which ikea say will last approx 2 years.

    • +9

2 years is a VERY optimistic timeframe on them. I have to replace them at least once a year for high traffic areas.

      • Good to know, cheers!

      • +12

        Maybe you need a roundabout?

      • +4

I got a bit sick of replacing them, and attached a 2xAAA holder behind.
The 2032 are in parallel, so a 3V supply works. At least on my older model.

      • Every half a year for me.

    • +1

      IKEA stopped selling 2032 batteries.
Do we have any other good source of inexpensive 2032 batteries?

      • +1

I'm sure there are other places that sell it cheaper, but I've been buying these from Amazon and they work out to 85c each currently. I'm no expert in evaluating them but they've worked out well with sensors like these.

      • Kmart

      • got a 4 pack from kmart for 4-5 a couple of weeks ago

    • BS. I've had it for a couple years in the garage. The batteries (IKEA brand) last less than a year. Also, it didn't auto-pair when I replaced the batteries, I've had to re-pair it each time I replace them. Eventually I gave up pairing it and stopped using it.

  • +2

I can confirm it does work well with their TRÅDFRI gateway, as well as the DIRIGERA gateway. And if you use Homekit, it works well with that too.

  • +2

Click and collect incurs a $5 fee as far as I know

    • +4

Ah, you're right! I'll update that: it's free for orders over $50, otherwise, it's a $5 fee. Thanks

    • +5

      Scumbag IKEA.

I’m going to guess the fee is to actually actively discourage people shopping online. They want you to go in store get lost in their rats nest layout and buying something else.

      • +2

OTOH you have people ordering home delivery with one pass for items costing under $1 from Bunnings.

        • They’re paying for a subscription that entitles them to do so, what’s the problem?

Also, I was talking about Click & Collect. Charging $5 for someone to take a product off the shelf is extortion.

  • +5

Thanks, OP! I use this motion sensor, which is connected to my HA, to control the water dispenser for my cats. The water starts flowing when it detects the presence of my cats.

    • What water dispenser do you use for the cats ?

      • +3

I bought the dispenser from here. The USB cable to power the dispenser is connected to my smart power socket, and allowing the motion sensor to control it.

    • +8

I love the ingenuity of HA users

    • Lucky you.
My cat has 3 fountains which run constantly, but, NO that's not good enough… I need to open the bath tub tap every damn 20 minutes or he will scream the house down.

Before I used a USB PIR which worked well for a couple months.

      • +3

"I said FRESH WATER, damn you!"

      • +2

Our cat is the same! She goes into our shower and meows loudly at the tap until we turn it on, she jumps out of the way to not get sprayed then laps all the water off the tiles.
3 times a day at least.
She has two cat water fountains elsewhere in the house and outside that she doesnt touch.

  • +2

Says available in Perth. Checkout fails, no delivery or collect available.
    … chat says:

Collect orders are full at Perth Ikea for the next week. Delivery slots are likely to be made available later this afternoon

Looking in my crate, see two spares from last time Ikea was selling them for $5. Maybe it is for the best :)

    • +2

Perfect excuse to do an IKEA run then.

      • +1

It says 2 in stock. Good luck !

      • +3

Just be aware they're likely going to be display stock and or stolen

    • Having a similar problem. Says click and collect and delivery available, then I go purchase it and says unavailable :-/

  • +3

Been waiting for their new parasoll hopefully this mean it’s coming out soon

    • And I just got all these Aqara sensors with their damn button batteries…

      • Haha yeah been waiting for the new sensors so I can use rechargeable aaa

    • +1

Surely soon. They’ve been available 6 months in other countries

      • +1

Yep worst case ill be in JPN soon and i saw the new sensors there will be bringing a whole suitcase back…..

    • +1

I was ecstatic to see that PARASOLL is finally on the Australian IKEA website with an estimated availability (at least in Adelaide) for the end of the month. VALLHORN, BADRING and TRETAKT appear to be available already!

  • So this would work with a Hue hub?

    • +1

      No

    • +1

      Sort of.
The Hue app will not see it, but it can control a bulb that is also on the hub. Not worth the hassle though.

  • Only issue for this one for my use case is that there is no light sensor in it, it's motion only. So no detecting how bright the room is.

    • They have a switch at the back for day and night mode :)

      • Not really useful as an automation device to have a switch to tell it if it's dark or light…

        • Guess you're not using thee for the same purpose I am :)

Our HA still runs awesomely with some of these bought when they were first released; way cheaper than the Hue alternative at the time, and it can tell if it's light or dark. Want something different that you can't work out via IFTT/similar? Buy two, set one to fire in dark, one to fire in light. They're $5 :)

  • I have atleast 5 installed in my home in different rooms .. bought them for the sole purpose of switching the lights on and off .. it has 3 modes .. always active, sunset and sunrise modes, and time of day .. but if you set them to any of the other settings other than always active .. and even in always active .. it does not i mean IT DOES NOT switch the lights off within the 2 minutes or 3 minutes setting .. it either works for 1 or 2 days or just doesnt work .. dont know what to do .. always have them updated to the latest firmware on everything ..

Also bought them for $25 each .. is there any way that i can get back the difference refunded from ikea ..

    • If you have your receipts, why not get back the full amount spent and return them? Or if you enjoy your suffering, I suppose you could do the classic buy-again-at-the-cheaper-price-and-return-the-new-item-with-old-receipts trick.

      • -1

That is what i will be doing now .. i bought 6 recerntly in may for full price .. will talk to them and if they agree to a refund of the remaining money .. i would go that way .. if they dont agree .. then i will return them for a refund and try to buy the same ones at the reduced price

        • +2

          will talk to them

You really do enjoy your suffering!

          • -1

@muncan: Just talked to them .. and they confirmed i can return and buy them at the discounted price .. lets see what happens ..

  • That's a very good price. I recently bought similar ones from AliExpress and they were $7.50/ea

    • Which one did you get?
Does it take AA or AAA batteries?
Also does it work with Home Assistant?

      • +1

It was called "EWelink Zigbee 3.0 mini PIR sensor".
I wanted something small. It uses 1xCR2450 battery (comes with one already installed). I've been using it for two months now, and it still shows 100% (not sure how accurate).

I have it connected to HA via Zigbee2Mqtt.

  • Good price, I have one connected through a Conbee using DeConz on HA.Seems to work ok.

  • This used to work with Philips Hue Bridge + Ikea Light, but was a pain in the ass to pair all three

Worked for a year, then stopped working with Hue, but still works with an Ikea bulb by themselves.

    • +2

Much easier to connect the sensors to Home Assistant, and get HA to control the lights via the Hue Bridge.

      • With HA and Sonoff ZigBee coordinator I connect hue lights directly to HA, why use Hube Bridge and add another 2.4Ghz interference in the ZigBee network?

        • Hue is a bit more reliable than HA. ZigBee wall switches and google/Alexa/etc work well. Easier to configure scenes.
I let hue do what it does well, and HA add more.
How is voice control in HA these days?

      • Can't be bothered to buy a new zigbee hub, currently have 20ish lights connected to Hue Bridge + Home Assistant

  • Will this work with Xiaomi gateway?

    • Nope

  • YRMV but didn't have much success using this as an outdoor motion sensor, despite it being displayed as such in the manual.

    • I find the hue indoor motion works great outside under cover

  • Keep in mind there are 3x 2032 batteries inside this (why wouldn't you use AA??) and it chews batteries. Wish I'd gone with another option but for $5 it's hard to argue.

    • +1

I bought them for the batteries 😅

  • IKEA Tempe has stock.

  • When will the new versions be available? Can't seem them on ikea website yet….

    • An hour or so later and there are none.

      • what i meant to ask is the new PARASOLL and VALLHORN sensors - I cant see these on the website yet….

        • +2

They're not yet available on Australian IKEA stores. Hopefully soon - many (including me) have been waiting for months

          • +1

@happy-reference: thanks mate for that info.

          • @happy-reference: Do we know if these have a shorter cool down period than the TRÅDFRI PIR Sensor?

            • @Meldge: I think this one is hardcoded to 60 Seconds
I've not seen many battery operated sensors do shorter than that. Usually you need a mains powered sensor, or they devour batteries

            • @Meldge: Not entirely sure, but when it was first released overseas, there were numerous complaints about various issues with the VALLHORN sensors. Hopefully, these issues have been resolved with firmware updates since then.

    • +1

The new PARASOLL and VALLHORN sensors now appear to be available on the Australian IKEA website

  • Which alternative to get ?
    Want rechargeable
    USB c
    Easy to integrate with HA
Just turn a light on off if I'm in there or not

    • I can highly recommend the Xiaomi motion sensors. Not rechargeable, but I've yet to change the batteries on ANY of mine and they are over 5 years old! I actually ordered more batteries in 2020 thinking they've gotta run out soon, nope, still in the drawer! It's not due to low traffic either, got them in the main walkways of my house with pets always triggering them.

  • +1

good deal this one is actually 80% off like the sale says.

this was actually 81% off I was going to post it but looks like everyone snatched them up. OOS 😭 https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/lunnarp-side-table-white-503990…

    • OMG that's on my list for tomorrow's visit.

      • +1

        g'luck!

I don't live near one so not going in store 😭

lucky I ordered my stuff before the ikea sale started so my stuff is already shipped. couple accessory sized items including headphone stand and shipping was only $5 which I thought was fair.

everything I ordered is not in the sale. but if you are wondering I got this headphone stand https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/lanespelare-headset-stand-ash-v…

  • -1

Most TRÅDFRI products are discontinued. Maybe these are new products. Still very good at this price. Unlucky, OOS for me. Hope to find my luck in-store tomorrow.

  • Sorry people are referring to “HA”, what’s this? I’m out of the loop 🥲

    • +3

HA = Home Assistant. It's a platform for home automation that allows you to control and monitor smart devices in your home. You can add almost anything to it and control/automate all sorts of things using it. Some people even joke that configuring HA can become a full-time job.

      • Thanks for that, I guess this is linked to google hone assistant? Or generic to google/andriod/apple

        • +1

Nothing to do with Google, it is its own beast.

HA can run on just about anything. I am sure it has been ported to more devices than Doom. My instance runs on an RPi.

        • +2

Home Assistant is an amazing tool for connecting eco systems not designed to talk to each other.
I have Ikea Lights and switches
A Google TV and Sony Soundbar
Xiaomi Temperature Sensors connected via Zigbee USB Stick
Google Speakers for sending messages, playing music (Voice Commands require optional $ Sub)
InkBird Bluetooth BBQ thermometer (That one was a surprise)
Octoprint connected to my 3D Printer
A Broadlink RF/IR blaster to control a non-smart AirCon and RF Ceiling Fans
          Reolink Cameras connected through iSpy
          PiHole DNS filtering
a Handful of Tuya Smart Switches and Light Strips (Arlec GridConnect is just rebranded Tuya)

And I can use Home Assitant to handle them all at the same time.
I can monitor a 3D Print, while checking the temperature in the Garage, have my Google speaker tell me the progress of the print at various intervals.
Or turn on the AirCon in the living room in the morning, but only if the temperature is below a certain threshold.

  • anyone know what the range on these are?

    • In the 'good to know' section of the product description it says: "The motion sensor has a maximum range of 10 metres to the light source when not blocked by walls. For reaction to movement, the maximum range is 5 metres and a 120° angle."

  • Only available in Perth

    • Given that it has been saying "2 in stock" for some time, I would not count on that.

  • Anyone know if this will work with my Google Home/Assistant? 🥹
