Safer but doesn't heat as well

    • +11

Dyson HP03 - can purify air, can cool, is a 1500w heater.

$50 heater - isn't available, can heat at 2 different settings, can fan.
      Welcome to my non-chatgpt tedtalk

      • +6

        can cool

It can blow hot air from the heater, or room temperature air. It doesn't have a cooling mechanism, so it too is just a fan.

I have one and regret the purchase, although it does do a good job of keeping my room toasty warm, but no better than my $40 fan heater in my bathroom.

        • +4

Yeah I regretted my purchase too because of the fan, fortunately it broke after 12 months and Dyson gave me a full refund

        • Thank for your review. I thought I can use it to warm in winter and cool in summer, saving my bucket then.

          • @codinghelloworld: Sitting here with the unit delivered 4 days ago - and correct. Good heater but that's it. Even the temperture I am struggling with as I set it at 18 last night on auto mode but found the room hitting 20C and above. The cooling is non-existance. My $60 Xiaomi fan is better. Going to return it based on the 45day return policy.

            • @Mazozb: Which $60 xiami fan/heater did you get?

              • +2

@droodle: No heating. I meant Dyson doesnt cool - it's just an expensive fan in summer and my Xiaomi does better at being a fan.

                • +2

@Mazozb: Out of curiosity, what made you expect the Dyson to cool like an air conditioner?

                  • @eug: Never said that. I researched and knew full well that cooling sucks. I just told the bloke further up my input on both heating and cooling/fan. Personally, I bought it for heating and with the 45day return to test it out. Though i expected the fan to actually move alot more air which sealed the deal for me to return it. The fan is very loud and is not impressive at all.

                    • +2

@Mazozb: Hmm ok. Your first post mentioned you setting it to 18 degrees and the room hitting 20+. That made me assume you were expecting it to keep the room at 18 degrees when all a fan can do is circulate the air at whatever temperature it is; only a device with an active cooling mechanism like an air conditioner would be able to reduce the temperature like that.

                      • @eug: Ah nah thats heating mate. Room is hitting 11C at night here these days. I'm trying to maintain 17-18C throughout the night (also using electric blanket so dont need it to be too warm surrounding) but it shoots way over (per my seperate sensors) to 20-21C despite the setting at 18C. I cleaned the temp sensor today to see if it will do better tonight.

                        • +2

@Mazozb: Oh right, sorry! Looking at how air currents in leaky rooms (airflow under doors for example) can affect localised temperature in a room, a 10% margin of error isn't surprising to me though. Uncalibrated consumer temperature sensors could also introduce an error.

    • +4

This is kind of a jack-of-all-trades.

It's a fan, but not as good as the larger Dyson tower fans.

It's a heater, but no better than a decent standalone electric heater, and far less efficient than a reverse-cycle air-conditioner.

It's a purifier, but its test results are nowhere near as good as a conventional air purifier.

But if you want a heater, a fan, and an air purifier, it's a compact package that does all three. For someone constrained on space, it makes some sense.

      • Good one. This is me. Have a table fan, 5 fin heater and very old Cli-AP20 (about 10yo) air filter. Consumed so much space and 3 additional power point. This Dyson will be all in one.

        • look up replacement parts cost before you buy.

          You are welcome.

          • @andresampras: What replacement parts?

            • @eug: The air filter

              • @Richardc: I've been using the $27 ones on Amazon. Works well enough for me. I vacuum it every now and then; it traps heaps of dust.

How much does andresampras expect filters to cost? Are we meant to be thanking him after finding out how cheap they are?

                • @eug: Just a comment to look up the ongoing costs, eug - nothing more. Not everyone factors them in when making purchases like this.

Better to go in with eyes open than to realise in 6 months your thingy needs a thingo replaced regularly at <insert price here>

                  • @andresampras:

Just a comment to look up the ongoing costs, eug - nothing more.

OK no worries, the way you phrased it implied that replacement parts were expensive and we would be grateful to you for alerting us to it.

                    • @eug: TBH that is partially true - some people aren't comfortable using non-genuine replacement parts, particularly for something as critical as the filter on an air purifier.

Just depends on each person and what they want. Hence the PSA to look it up.

    • GF gets extremely cold so got this heater.

It's surprisingly powerful and uses way less electricity than we predicted. Using a Tapo outlet to record consumption, it costs about 46c per hour to run.
Our somewhat small bedroom is hot well before an hour is up.

As for safety. It's got a little pressure switch at the bottom so if it falls over it cuts its circuit.

As a side note, it pairs really well with the Tapo outlet as you can set it up to turn on with a schedule to bump the temp over night.

$15 heater + $19 outlet = a very cheap system that seems to do anything the pricey ones do other than oscillation and cooling.

Thanks Ops. Have been keeping an eye on this to go on sale.

  • +3

That's a great price. Been keeping an eye on Dyson's. Bought thanks.

I have one Dyson heater. It's rubbish as a fan but great as a heater. It purifies the air, safe for young kids and it maintains temperature throughout the night

    • Kids aspect is probably the biggest reason to get one of these over a standard fan/heater.

    • I do understand the safety aspects for sure.
But given that air conditioners are more effective and efficent (BUT NOISY) (even portable ones?) could they be a better option?
      eg: https://ausclimate.com.au/products/all-seasons-4-1kw-portabl…

      • Hmm, I'm not sure how efficient that portable air conditioner is. It only has a single exhaust hose which means the unit will be sucking air in through the vents on the back and blowing it out the window.

The air in the room would have to be replaced somehow, which usually means cold air from under the door or any leaks/vents in the room will be pulled into the room.

Heat pump air conditioners are more efficient than resistive, but if it's also pulling cold air into the room, I'm not sure if the numbers still work out.

  • How's the cooling function for hot and stuffy summer nights? Any good?

    • +3

Better off looking for air circulator fans.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/circulator

    • +4

Pretty bad. It's noisy and doesn't move much air.

      • yes it is noisy for such an expansive price

      • +1

None of the Dyson fans move air. Vornado on the other hand, they really move air around without too much noise.

    • +3

It just pushes air around, there's no active cooling function.

I guess because it has heating mode, so they call un-heated mode cooling, to differentiate itself from a heating fan that is always heated.

      • +1

Is there any active-cooling device that isn't either an evaporative cooler (terrible in humid weather), or a proper air conditioner (portable or fixed)? I certainly haven't found any active cooling device that doesn't fall into one of these categories.

In the end, the only option for hot, humid summers ends up being an air conditioner vented to the outside. However, fans can help somewhat with maintaining comfort despite not actively cooling.

        • +1

Evaporative or heat exchange are the only ways to get rid of heat. Thermoelectric coolers only work on contact, and by design will heat the space the same if not more than the cooling applied.

      • I wonder what their return rate is from customers who were expecting it to cool the air.

  • +1

Thanks so much. I’ve been eyeing this for a few months and finally bought today!!!

  • grabbed one

  • Do you have to be an ebayplus member? or pay through Zip?

I can't seem to use the code.

  • +1

    Thanks Op. ordered one.

  • I’m after buying an air purifier but don’t need a heater or a fan. Would anyone say this is a good option or should I just get a good purifier?

    • Nah it needs the fan on as well to use the purifier.

  • +1

Thanks OP just grab one. Was in search for a fan and heater with wifi (smart) + always wanted to try Dyson but too expensive. Was considering used but afraid of no warranty thingy. Its for a small room for kids about 3 x 3m big. Had a standalone air filter but this will be a bonus

  • Need to factor in filter cost, $100 genuine, $30 compatible. Recommended every 12 months.

    • +1

      I've just been vacuuming mine.

*replacement is recommended though, as I doubt vacuuming will pull the finest particles out

      • +1

I'm glad I'm not the only one even though it's not the best thing to do.

        • +3

Sounds like I will be joining you guys.

        • +1

The amount of dust I vacuum off is really satisfying!

  • This integrates well with Home Assistant with this integration.

    • Wrong link?

      • Whoops you're right, this is the right one!

  • Is this equivalent in energy efficiency to a reverse-cycle heat pump?

    • +1

This is a fan with heating elements, it doesn't have a compressor and cannot compare to a heat pump.

  • Can these sit on carpet?

    • yep

  • +2

While I like dyson products in general (got 2 x v10, 2 x hair dryers)
doesn't think their fan / air purifier / heater series worth the high price tag
got one dyson heater in my parents home and they are noisy and weak…

  • Shit, I bought this last week for $410 from ebay with the code deal! Wish I'd waited a week. Anyone know any sort of price matching option there? Paid with gift card I bought with an Amex…

    • I bought one yesterday for $441. You could buy it again, Dyson have 45 day money back guarantee. I’m not 100% sure it applies for their Ebay store though, you’ll have to check.

Whoops, just read you bought with gift cards. I guess you could use the gift cards for something else.

  • thanks op , bought one

  • -1

    TA OP grabbed 100

  • How is this compared to HP07? Is it worth getting that double the price?

    • +1

Save your money, get this if you are looking at getting one. The HEPA filter wont work that much more effectively than this one, and the sensor is a bit gimmicky, you cant tell if its even reading true.

  • +1

Do I need a second one? Probably not. Buy now, think later.

  • +1

    Reviews are mixed. Beware

  • can this be "kept on" and hooked up to a timer? i don't want it on the whole time in the bedroom but also want it to be on heater mode when it turns on by timer.

    • No to the timer. These non-dumb devices wont turn on with a flick of a switch. But this one is linked to wifi, so it should be able to be integrated into google home/alexa/siri to use it on a schedule.

      https://www.dyson.com.au/products/air-treatment/purifiers/co…

    • You can create a schedule in the app. It lets you turn it on/off at specific times and days and lets you specify the settings you want.

  • Code doesnt work

  • The while and silver is also available at the same price, if that goes better with your decor.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/155109941914

    • Code didn't work on the white. Sale seemed limited to the Black

    • The code doesnt seem to show up for either one anymore, likely expired now.

  • Code doesn't work.

  • Code no longer works

  • Ran out while it was in my cart.

  • +1

Got three of these now - thanks OP. Great quick heaters and fans! We use these in our office and having an extra for when we have a kiddo will be great since it also has temperature sensors.

  • Fml lol literally just bought this yesterday after using my cba rewards at Myers for similar price

  • +2

Gutted I missed this, Im freezing my fingers off in my home office ;(

Any change they will list more?

    • Get this and wait for the next deal. Don't leave it on all day as they are power hungry.

      https://www.kmart.com.au/product/oscillating-fan-heater-blac…

      • Genuine question, are these safe for toddlers? Missus wants me to get heaters and a few dyson is out of budget.

Edit. Nvm close supervision required. Anyone can offer a way to heat up toddlers room apart from Dyson? Rental so can't do panel heating

  • Missed it :(
    Great deal!!

  • Are these $$$ to run?

  • Anyone have recommendations to heat up a toddler's room? Need something safe to touch but does the job.

    Edit:rental so I can't hang a panel heater

    • -1

      oil column heater, perhaps

some people debate this but I find they dry the air a lot less than aircon or fan heater.

Downside is time to heat up. We use one with a built-in timer.

      • I don’t think an oil column heater is safe to touch

        • Depends on your risk appetite I guess - our oil heater gets quite warm but it’s not an instant burn - more like an ‘ooh now that I’ve touched it I don’t think I’d like to again’.

I prefer kids to learn to be safe around things rather than to 100% protect them

    • Tbh even one of these can get very hot near the vents, so how safe to touch do you need it to be? It is obviously a lot safer than the ones with metal grills, but unless its high up in the air, it wont be safe to touch.

      • Tbh even one of these can get very hot near the vents, so how safe to touch do you need it to be?

I have one under my desk; when my feet are cold I turn it on and stick my feet right on the vents for a while and it feels great, not too hot.

I've tried that with my old 2400W generic fan heater and it burns. Being able to see the hot heating coils carrying mains voltage isn't very reassuring either, so I do think this is safer than one of those.

        • +1

I was more thinking for the perspective of little baby hands.

  • omg! I missed it!!!!

  • Missed, so sad

  • I am glad I bought!!! It is heating up my room so quick.
I was hesitant to buy one after read negative comments but lucky I bought it anyway because you snoozed you lose lol.

    • +2

Yeah, the problem online is most of the time people who are satisfied with something don't bother posting about it, so you'd tend to read more negative comments than positive even if there actually are a large number of positive experiences.
