      Most underrated comment.

Many Australian are oblivious to geo-politics of the world. They have no idea how the new world order being sought by Russia, China, Iran and North Korea will affect them or their future generations.

      • Everything else is also made in china. Thanks to our greed.oil countries are no saints either

    • You think we are going to fight our biggest trade partner?

      • +1

Biggest trading partner doesn't mean you get bullied and take it up your backside. No self-respecting nation should be OK with bullying, political coercion, harassment in international waters and frequent state sponsored hacking attacks.

China doesn't have a better alternative to our iron ore, coal, lithium or other minerals. Otherwise, they would had banned these just like our meat, seafood, wine etc.

Just a rhetorical question to you - Would you let your business partner or employer rape/abuse your family because of financial leverage?

  • interesting the Dolphin can't have a towbar the Atto can

    • +8

surely towing something in an EV reduces the range to 69km

      • +6

        Nice.
        Wait, no, that's bad.

        • +3

But you get your choice of topping!

      • +1

yeah probably reduce it a fair bit. but the point isn't to tow a caravan.
Its just for tip runs or house moving / big object moving capability.

      • Remove something being towed, EV range increases to 420km.ಠ‿ಠ

  • Technically it isnt good value to buy a new car as it loses value as soon as you drive it.
Better value to buy a 1 or 2 years old car instead?

    • +4

This is a very strange time for car prices.
As you see, many EV's are dropping prices by the month. All indications are that this will continue.
There is quite bad value in the used market due to the post covid price surge.

    • Sure but if no one buys new there would be no used cars

    • +6

Technically yes, but not if you have to pay near new price of a well used car.

I never understood people who buy a three year old car with 50,000km or more to save $5000 or less.

You are getting old tyres, battery, less warranty, older model, possible damaged, probably been parked outside in the sun 24x7 etc etc.

  • +2

So many here saying Dolphin should be under $30K, tell me how many ICEs under $30K that come with as many features as Dolphin? Personally I am hoping the Dolphin Premium to be close to $40K driveaway then I will definitely buy one.

    • +5

This is a better buy than a Corolla for many people. Especially if you only drive 10-50km a day and this is most people and especially if you have a garage or parking sport with a charger.

Lots of reviews on YT about Chinese cars, generally very reliable.

Two years from now EVs are going to be far cheaper than ICE.

      • +2

Agree, only if you have access to home or work charging. Those living in an apartment and only have to rely on expensive public chargers, shouldn't buy an EV yet.

  • +6

For anyone who can get govt rebates ($6k in Queensland at the moment) and/or a novated lease (fbt free) I have no idea why anyone would buy any other small car new. For me buying a new atto3 was cheaper than buying a used Camry, particularly as I have solar.

  • +3

I feel some sympathy for the current owners trying to offload their used EVs on the second hand market. Plenty of 2023 and 2022 BYDs (with 1000s of kms) listed on Carsales for at or above the new 2024 ticket price. Should be some zesty deals once reality catches up with them.

  • +13

These price cuts are excellent news. More people can cut themselves off from the addiction to oil. We import over 90% of the petrol and diesel used in this country, and we're at the end of a very long and fragile supply chain. An adversary just has to cut off a few tankers of oil products and this country literally grinds to a halt within weeks.

As for people who bought them in the past and are watching the resale value crash, well, it wasn't hard to predict. New technology always demands a premium price. My first LCD monitor was $2000 (closer to $3500 inflation adjusted). Now a much better monitor costs $89. That's just the way it is with new tech.

    • Yes, and there an opportunity cost of waiting. An early adopter may have a number of years of savings in fuel/servicing/rego/repairs etc to offset the drop in resale.

    • An adversary just has to cut off a few tankers of oil products and this country literally grinds to a halt within weeks.

Now you can achieve the same with just a firmware update!

Good to hear BYD lower the price to give pressure to Tesla and other EVs, I am waiting for this pressure to come more so to buy a cheaper Tesla.

I am selecting EV but definitely won’t buy BYD, I read Chinese forums so I know the real facts of BYD cars, there are a lot EV in china so there are enough first hand data tells me to avoid BYD.

I admit BYD interior looks fancier than Tesla, but I am buying a car which needs to be safe enough for the family, I am not buying a TV + Sofa + iPad on top of the cardboard chassis

    • +6

I use my sofa and tv more than my car, so I'm actually happy with a Chinese ev. Kia was once upon a time seen as rubbish, look at the now

      • I don’t mind to look back BYD after 5 years when there are enough BYD in Australia, and enough forum posts with first hand local experiences about the BYD locally.

    • +2

You know that Australian Tesla's are Chinese built, right?

      • +2

The problem is not Chinese build, is the company designed it and quality controlled it.

Apple is Chinese build, I have no problems buying Apple

        • +2

Judging by the original American-built Teslas, the QC wasn't quite up to scratch…

        • +2

          I have problem with Apple's 2x cost for 1/2 functionality ;)
Moving to superior engineered Chinese brands with no fake iMarketing
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgmDiWfZJcI

          • @taki: Is it unbiased

          • @taki: What "double" functionality do non-Apple devices offer?

    • Which brand do the Chinese car user forums prefer?

      • +1

        Tesla, Xiaomi

        • tesla is only third in the china market. BYD > Geely > Tesla

          • +3

@May4th: Cheaper brand sells more does not mean cheaper ones are good

            • +2

@petiteway: Right, I am interested in the opinion of Chinese buyers who are deeper into the timeline with EV's.
Basically where is the quality? Which brand demonstrates the most reliability and decent build quality.

              • +3

@King Tightarse: Tesla, track record, proper design, quality control

              • -1

@King Tightarse: Xiaomi too new, and BYD toooooo many problems and burnings, the company will call you and offer you money to delete your social media post if you post issues, fire, photo and video.

Thats why I am only looking at Tesla now

    • According to this, they're pretty reliable - more so than Tesla.

      https://www.osv.ltd.uk/byd-reliability-how-reliable-are-byd-….

I might buy one from Temu.

  • +1

Furthermore, these cars in china sell for less than $20000 AUD, it’s like buying $20000 car and pay the same amount for shipping and importers profit. But the quality is not $40000, it’s still $20000 quality

    • +1

Tesla sells cheaper in China too. Because their market size, the competitions in EV is next level you will never see in here. You won't see the "China-only" low EV price in any other market.

    • Cars are just cheaper in China. European cars are cheaper, does that mean we shouldn't buy them in Australia too as we are not getting good value - https://carnewschina.com/2023/09/04/volkswagen-id-4-price-cu…

30k AUD in China, easily 60-70k+ if sold in Australia.

You have a point that cars are more expensive in Australia which is unfortunate, but our average income is like x2-3 at least, it's a given car sellers will mark up prices here, Chinese car or not.

      • X2-3? Try x5-6. Averages vs average salary

        • +1

So it's super unrealistic to expect Chinese prices in Australia, given costs in the logistics, wages. If it's 25k in China, even getting to 35k seems reasonable

    • +2

find a car that is cheaper in australia than in the local market

its like saying a corolla is 21k AUD worth in japan but its 35k in australia

  • It’s like amd, hope beat Toyota to it and I will grab a rev4 hybrid

    • What does a BYD Dolphin have to do with a RAV4 (which is what I assume you mean)?

  • That's a modern-looking interior. I like the quirky fun design. Wouldn't mind a cheap EV as a daily driver and keep a fun manual car as a weekender. Installing an EV charger at home is the problem though…my garage is only a one-car garage and the daily driver is sitting outside.

    • Can always just charge it with a wall socket but that would make it harder to charge on solar.

  • Where Shark

  • LFP batteries are also cheaper, lower density, so larger and heavier for the same capacity, and slower to charge, and not capable of high performance, like NMC, which is why you don't see them in performance or premium cars.

    • +1

All BYD vehicles use LFP batteries and guess what? Even their Performance models.

    • Tesla Model Y and 3 using LFP batteries can already charge at 170kW.

BYD has LFP cars already on sale capable of doing 150kW. They have new cars coming end of the year that will do 230kW

And on top of that, CATL and BYD have next gen batteries coming end of 2024 that will charge even faster again.

  • Looks like my 4 months old BYD is dropping in price quickly. Looks like more bargains are coming.

    • Were you hoping for it to increase in value?

      • Of course not. Just saw that it is dropping quicker than my other car. What I see is that the newer the release and the cheaper it is selling. Well.

  • +4

Waiting for the BYD Dolphin to be A$29900 drive away ..no more to pay.

    • +3

Why? What ice cars have the same options/trim level and are much cheaper than this?

  • +1

Does anybody else think this has a Honda jazz vibe?

  • +2

For those who think lower resale value is a reason NOT to buy an EV, imagine what will happen to the resale value of ICE vehicles once petrol stations start shutting down. Petrol is a low margin, high throughput business, and even a modest EV adoption rate of around 20% would be enough to push many stations into unprofitable territory.

Yes, petrol stations will stick around for as long as ICE vehicles remain more than a hobby, but expect to travel 2 or 3 times the distance to fill up at a freeway truckstop while your neighbours charge their EVs at home. And don't expect fuel to become any cheaper - as demands falls off, the supply chain will also start to collapse and prices will remain the same or higher.

    • OK I won't go as far as when petrol stations closing down. Lol

If within 1-2year every ev is is price the same as ICE cars.
The ice/hybrid market will be hit hard new and 2nd hand market.
Only way for ice cars to survive is they need to keep lowering their price to be under ev.

So yeah not sure why people only worry about ev 2nd hand……

      • The interesting this is that when you consider total cost of ownership say over 5 or 10 years, EV's are already at or below price parity with ICE. Its just that most people only consider the sticker price and not what a vehicle actually will cost them over 5 or 10 years.

    • Have a like for spitting facts bud.
Its a case of a virtuous cycle for EV's as they become more popular and a vicious cycle for ICE/fossil fuel as popularity declines..

  • +1

    This or MG4 or Ora?

    • The MG4 is the drivers car, the Premium in the Dolphin is your best value and forget the Ora.

      • My dad has a MG4, I honest think its just an ok kind of car. What makes you say Ora is bad? I know its kind small and all that…………

        • -1

not sure if you can find some technical reviews in English, GWM sucks in making pure electric cars and the Ora is one of their worst product….

      • Agree re MG4, best value is Ora. Dolphin somewhere in the middle.

        • +1

Agree as well. Picking up the Ora based on the value alone for 2nd car.
          * $30k near new (< 1k km, 5 months old).
          * Good passenger room inside.
          * Not poverty back seat (looking at you MG4) for the kids.
          * The boot is small (main car for that).
          * All the safety gear (again, MG4 fall down)
          * Performance ok (compared to Dolphin Dynamic)
          * Lease costs blew me away. As cheap as keeping my existing old ICE car p/w
          * Warranty better than BYD (so many exceptions - 3yrs on multimedia, 4yrs on suspension)
          * Still heaps cheaper than either

    • +1

There are heaps of taxi Ora in China - reliability and comfort. Best warranty! The Ora sits higher than both and can climb small kerbs. Very spacious, good power, easy to drive

  • +1

I just want to get their Latest BYD Han L.
Hubird car, one tank petrol from Mel to Bris.
    Moreover, Its only 20k

    • +5

20k if you smoke crack. The han will be 50k+ here.

      • It can't be more than doubled.
I can do it for no more than 40K.
At least, I can avoid Hybrid Yaris.

        • Unfortunately it will be unlikely $40K for you. Atto3 is around $50K here, Han L will be around the same price.

    • Nahhhh, Han was more like the sister car of the seal here. what you meant was Qin L, and no way it will come here at 20k AUD. USD maybe…

    • Two-tone in the Seal?

  • Once they start putting 12V batteries in that last more than 12 months, don't lie on the battery % so that 10-0% takes about the same amount of KM as 25-24%, introduce reasonable EV servicing costs and not try to drum up extra revenue for their mycar partners, I might look at one.

  • +2

    Avoid just for this….
    Random braking is so dangerous

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/91jj2qp3?p=93#r740011…

    • Woah that is quite alarming

      • I'm scared driving behind one of these cars just in case…My mind cant deal with people doing random sht on roads, already enough cray cray impatient people don't need to add computer variables as well….

        • +2

Better avoid driving behind Tesla’s also given they’re notorious for phantom braking.

    • I just thought I would point out that all new cars with these features seem to be imperfect with random braking and other things. Even Tesla's paid extra for self driving is prone to crash into the car in front where a basic car with automatic braking would stop.

Having said that, the post seems to indicate a problem much worse then other vehicles if its true that the lane keep assist is steering towards parked cars and if it is truly emergency braking rather then phantom braking which should be easily user overridden.

I wouldn't automatically trust one person's experience as they might not fully understand how the features work or how to explain what is happening correctly.

  • Ten BYD showrooms in China have burned to the ground since 2021 , you may say their exported product is of higher quality but why take the chance. Just google it.

    • BYD stopped making cars with pouch style batteries this year. These are the batteries that consistently caught fire.
BYD's exported globally never used these older style pouch style batteries to my knowledge.

    • +3

I have looked in to this claim in the past.

There is one confirmed showroom fire. BYD said it wasn't a battery fire, but who really knows the truth. The 10 showroom claim comes from Epoch Times, which have zero credibility.

      • who is still funding this rag? does anyone actually use it for anything other than packing paper? it's laughable as anti-CCP propaganda almost as bad as actual CCP propaganda

        • I couldn't agree more. FLG has went too far and it only ridicule themselves and they become an anti-CPP CPP.

  • +1

another day, another anti-EV/BYD, sponsored article. looks like the stakeholders are really sweating now, about time too

Imagine this: you're driving a BYD electric car and hear news about the Russia-Ukraine war. You casually curse "dictator," and as a result, your vehicle is remotely controlled to suddenly crash into pedestrians on the roadside…

Your home address, and whether you know any members of Congress in your phone contacts? Or like TikTok, the screen in your vehicle displays your district representative's phone number and suggests you call them to urge Congress to stop increasing tariffs on Chinese electric cars…

Your life is full of "surprises."

    • +1

      Imagine this

Superfluous. Sounds like your imagination is enough to count for all of us.

      • -5

I can't represent you, but your words suggest that you represent everyone, don't U?

A government that can lock down its citizens for over three years, restrict the export of masks and ventilators during the pandemic, and leverage other countries. What can't such a communist totalitarian state do? TikTok's CEO, Shou Chew, when questioned publicly by a U.S. congressman about whether he would comply with the Chinese government's directive to collect user information, could only answer, "I am a Singaporean," without directly denying any cooperation with Chinese government departments. It is also a fact that TikTok prompts users on their phones to oppose the U.S. Congress's investigation into the company.

Buddy, if you had even a little bit of understanding about the world, you wouldn't be living so naively.

    • +1

Wearing a tin foil hat are you?

      • -3

How original. Got any more clichés from the 90s? If wearing a tin foil hat means I'd be spared from harassment by the peanut gallery, I might consider wearing one

        • +1

At least it does not sound as ridiculous as your first post.

          • -3

@edfoo: Is there anything more absurd than 1.4 billion people being locked down for 3 years? Isn't it laughable that you so quickly forget that during the pandemic, you had to beg the People's Republic of China to buy masks?

            • @Hi Hi Hi: Laughs in Victoria

              • -1

@May4th: What could be more ridiculous than forgetting the three years of the pandemic, inflation, and begging the Chinese government for masks back then?
