  • Great Deal on a great camera!

  • I wished no cropping for 4k 60p video recording.

  • Soo - I got a load of M43 lenses and kind of excited about the gh7 but it's gonna be like $1000-1200 more than this. Dilemmas!

    • I moved from m4/3 to sony FF after 10+ years with m4/3 so I get ya, the move is painful, and the size differences of some lenses is a culture shock, at least initially, but I'm overall happy I made the move.

      • What was your motivation out of interest? Purely IQ and low light performance?

        • +4

I love my 4/3 to bits, I still do, but I found myself increasingly bumping into 2 major issues; auto focus and low-light. For AF, subject-detection was basically non existent (EM5 Mark 2 and EM1 Mark 2), it frequently let me down. I had to select the smallest single point AF for me to get decent focusing, and getting it to land on things like the eye itself was challenging. Sony's AF is amazing, to me at least, it was night and day.

In low light - for the longest time, I relied on the still-industry-leading amazing stablisation of the Olympus cameras to get by, but there are some situations you just can't use long exposure. Even with fast primes, I was still hitting 12,800 ISO on m4/3 in restaurants and whatnot.

Then, all the newer m4/3 cameras bodies and lenses started to get bigger and bigger (and more expensive) to the point its the equivalent or even larger than FF cameras. I want a small EM5 body but with modern features not relabel and rebrand. I waited and waited but it never came. In fact, I think it regressed. the EM5 mark 3 body used plastic body and didn't reinforce the tripod mount so if you used a camera clip or strap which used the tripod mount as an anchor point - it would break! this never happened in 10 years of using the older metal Mark 2 model but happened to my bro - and lots more online saying so.

Of course there are tradeoffs; e.g., one of my favourite lenses is my 75mm f1.8 (150mm f3.6 equivalent) - the nearest equivalent is the sony 135mm f1.8 that i could find, and it is like 4x the size and weight (don't quote me on that). it is huge - and very, very expensive.

For anyone coming from m4/3, especially the smaller bodies & not for professional use, I would probably say consider the A7CII as its newer, cheaper, smaller, lighter, and almost or even a bit more capable than the few years old A7IV. I got the A7IV first, then sold it and moved to A7CII.

          • @lawyerz: You mentioned you still love your MFT - do you still use it? If so, how do you delineate between the two systems?

I semi-transitioned to Sony with an a7C (yeah, bummed this was just before the II came out - I would have loved that extra dial!).

I still use MFT for longer focal lengths eg the Oly 75mm and longer, because I find the equivalent Sony telephotos too hefty. The Samyang 75mm is probably my upper limit for FF lens size, at least until my kid becomes the next Tiger Woods and I may allow one "hefty" lens like the Tamron 70-180 f2.8 G2 or (depending how irrational I become over said kid's exploits) the Sony 70-200mm F2.8 II.

Totally agree with you about the AF and low light. MFT FB groups are full of stans who claim the massive ISO of indoor MFT photography is a non-factor as you can just de-noise them in post production. But I don't have time for that.

I also have the EM5ii and agree the continuous AF is a major hassle. I've read some tips about limiting burst mode to 5fps so you have continuous AF but the keeper rate still seems far lower than for Sony. But the photos I can get with the f1.8 45mm and 75mm are so much better than what my phone can do, I'm committed to MFT for longer focal lengths. I also do love some of Oly's party trucks like Live Composite.

Also agree re the bigger cameras that do have good AF and better ISO eg the OM1. It looks to be a fantastic camera, but it's bigger than the A7C and the Pro glass you'd feel obliged to use on it are almost as hefty as their FF equivalents and your overall carry is almost FF sized.

            • @y2k: I do - but not as my main camera - e.g. if i go travelling, going to events, etc - I bring the FF. but if i'm going for walk, a ride, etc, I bring my Em5 Mk2 (sold my Em1 Mk3). Em5 II + 14mm f2.5 pancake actually fits in my bicycle tube bag. Not gonna lie, m4/3 has seen drastically reduced use but I can't bring myself to sell it. Sentimental value lol. Plus I keep thinking the 75mm f1.8 is unbeatable in weight/size combo, and I will use it specifically for that one day as well. (I've been using FF 85mm + crop mode to get it to ~127mm instead)

I have never found denoise to work effectively at all - I find it makes the images just super soft and unsharp. There's also computational photography but it's a whole lot of effort during shoot and post. Remembering 12,800 ISO in m4/3 is ISO 51,200 in FF (crop factor squared)

Olympus, sorry, i mean "OM Systems" is focusing on wildlife and sports because of the long reach, I get that, but completely neglecting all other areas of the market. Bodies are large, and lenses are even larger than FF which is just not for me. I was baffled when they took a relabelled FF lens as m4/3 - completely negating the benefits of m4/3. Panasonic is not as bad but e.g. G9 which I had for a while is fantastic but has always been chonky body. The runaway success of Fuji's X100VI shows what a missed opportunity this could have been for them. This April fools' joke about a new Pen F really got me.

On the other hand, someone new coming into photography, the value you can get for 2nd hand m4/3 bodies and lenses are phenomenal. I've seen EM5 II body with 2000 shutter count go for $400 on fb marketplace.

@aNoPHeLeS OM-1 with BSI sensor and much improved subject detection, currently has $500 factory cash back (net $1800, lowest price ever) https://www.camerahouse.com.au/om-system-om-1-black-compact-….
Some unique features I am interested in - live composite, starry AF and live ND filter (6 stops). This and the 12-40mm F2.8 lens make a traveller-friendly combo.

      • I know it's not as fast but man I loved the Oly 12-100 f4. Such a versatile everyday lens if you don't need the 2.8

        • Yep that would be very versatile (with the wider range) if you don't need low light or fast shots.

  • Farrrrk, I really want this camera but i also wanted to upgrade my graphics card and CPU.. I wonder…

    • Bite the bullet. I moved from a 5dmk3 a year ago and no regrets. Great all round camera.

      • I have a Lumix GH4 right now so this will be a huge upgrade.

  • wow this is almost free

    is gen 5 comingout soon?

    • almost free

      Ha

    • If we go by the past cycles, it's approx 3.5 years per generation…

      A7 II – 20 Nov 2014
      A7 III – 26 Feb 2018
      A7 IV – 21 Oct 2021
      A7 V - Q1/2 2025?

  • Would JB hifi match this if Sony Store matches this and you have it in your cart?

    • Maybe with 3 more price match chain

      • 😂😂

  • I just realised I had an AMEX deal of $50 if purchasing from Sony - that means with price match, I get this camera for $2,597 which is an ALT, so i bit the bullet.

    • Did you get Sony to price match the price with the Ebay discount code? I have that AMEX offer too, would bite the bullet also if this works.

      • It absolutely did work, I was a little surprised but they didn't question it.

        • That's great, thank you!

  • I'm confused between this and A7CII. Any recommendations?

    • +1

Depending on your use case, A7 IV is aim at hybrid shooters, it's very capable at shooting both still and video, but not truely exceptional at either. Bigger body means better grip and a dual card slots for redundancy and backup.

The A7C II has a lower resolution sensor, fewer physical controls, a much more compact body. Once pair it with the right lense, you have a great camera that no current gen smartphone camera can hope to match.

      • The A7C II has a lower resolution sensor

        Not true

  • @JMokha
Depends on your use cases. See https://cameradecision.com/compare/Sony-Alpha-A7C-Mark-II-vs…
Basically a7 IV has more pro controls and features, a7c II is compact, newer and has some newer features like:

    • Auto framing
    • Better IS
    • Focus bracketing
    • Vehicle tracking
    • Insect Tracking
    • Thanks mate, I went with A7IV as I prefer a better grip larger body and a better viewfinder too. Appreciate your suggestion.
