[Special Order] Sony FE 28-70mm f2 GM Lens $4164.95 Delivered @ Ted's Cameras

180

Hello crazy camera lovers

I have been on the market for this lens (I shoot weddings). I got onto the chat with the guys at Sony (Link below), got them to price match with Teds (Link below) and activated the 12% cash rewards, bringing it down further to $3700-ish.

Teds:
https://www.teds.com.au/catalog/product/view/id/35952/s/sony…
Sony:
https://store.sony.com.au/lenses-g-lens/SEL2870GM.html

Bloody good price for a lens that costed $5k+ when it was first released.

If this benefitted you, would be greatly appreciated if you gave your boy's photography business a little love.

Happy shooting!

Just a FYI, the cashrewards will be more than likely be denied. "Cashback is ineligible on the following: Purchases using any type of discount which lowers price advertised on the Merchant site, including but not limited to employee discounts, student discounts and price-matching."

    • +2

I had that concern, but when I was going through the special terms, I didn't seen anything about price match (link below). I will report back and see if tracked or not.

      https://www.cashrewards.com.au/store/sony

      • good luck, if u can claim GST as well the price would be 3331.96!

      • Tracking is not a guarantee that they will pay out as they can update the tracking to rejected 1-2 months later when they reconcile the purchases. Has happened to me before with some stuff I bought with coupons knowing that I wasn't probably going to get the discount.

That being said though there have been plenty of reports here about mixed experiences, I personally have never issues with price matching and did get a price matched transaction through in Nov that was paid out so I'd always at least try.

      • +1

FYI TEAM, my purchase got tracked!! It got $454.35, estimated approval in 95 days!.

So brings down the lens to $3786.32

        • Update when the cash back is available for withdrawal. I wouldn't get too excited until then.

    • Yeah when I bought my Sony A7RV, the cashback didn't go through. Luckily, my first job paid for the camera and gear, so it wasn't as painful.

  • A great lens although my personal favourite is the Tamron 35-150/1.8-2.8 which is slightly faster at the short end (though less wide) but has double the reach on the long end.

    • I've sported the tamron 28-75/2.8 for ages, but have missed the zoom at times. Have long been considering the big brother of that lens (70 - 180 2.8), but really don't want to carry multiple lenses when travelling as I really love the how light the lens is.

Would you rec the tamron 35-150? the zoom range sounds ideal for single-lens carry and versatile enough for travelling with family, with a great f-stop as well …

      • +1

Yes, it handles everything except wide landscapes.
You can get in close at 150mm with portraits and sports etc but 35mm is good for group and scenes.

    • It's f2-2.8, not f1.8-2.8, as far as I can see

      Great lens though, love mine!

      • +2

That’s right, I got mixed up.
But I find it stays on my camera most of the time

  • +3

Nice lens but crazy price. I would wait until it inevitable drop further under 3k. Hopefully sigma makes a similar lens for some competition

    • +3

F2 zoom and crazy price go hand in hand.

    • +1

there's no way this is going to drop below $3000.

      • I think you will be able to get it eventually for ythe price with cashbacks. For example the 24-70mm f2.8 ii launched with a RRP of $3300. It can now be purchased for $2200 + CR cashbacks which takes it under $2k. Applying a similar 40% reduction to the 28-70mm makes it about 3k.

    • it does replace an entire bag full of primes. F2 would be the "closest" we'll ever get to a fast prime on a zoom lens of this range.

      complements the 70-200 nicely too.

  • How does this compare to the 24-70 GMii in terms of image quality? Are you just paying for F2?

  • f2 just seems so.. in between.. Its so close to 2.8 in regards to depth of field that you might as well save the cash and the weight for go an f2.8 zoom…. And its not close enough to the f1.4 or 1.2 look of primes..

But I guess if an f2 zoom is your thing then any saving is a good thing..

    • +3

It’s double the light or exposure speed to compare 2.0 and 2.8, remembering it’s the square law.

      • +1

Yeah F2 from F2.8 is a full stop like f2.8 vs F4 would be.

    • I hear you, but for me the f2 looks more sharper and a little more classy/premium than the f2.8. And yes, 1.4 and 1.2 definitely take the crown. I experimented with them all.

"classy" "premium" : odd choice of words to describe aperture…

have a read at my reply below:

depth of field is influenced by a) subject distance and b) focal length

f2 just seems so.. in between..

And its not close enough to the f1.4 or 1.2 look of primes..

this whole "F1.4" "F1.2" "look" is entirely a content creator lingo/jargon if you know the science and physics behind it.

depth of field is influenced by a) subject distance and b) focal length

the beauty of this lens is - with a slight twist on the zoom ring you can achieve shallow depth of field albeit with a bit more compression, granted subject distance remains the same.

For example, 42mm @ F2 has a shallower depth of field than 35mm @ F1.4. At the tele-end @ F2 the DoF is actually crazy shallow, other than for low light idk why would anyone need more?

      If you don't want compression, just move a bit closer to the subject. 35mm @ F2 @ 8.7m has a shallower DoF than 35mm @ F1.4 @10m.

      • +1

        What's the difference will be for 35mm @ F2 @ 10m vs 35mm @ F1.4 @ 10m?

        • you can use the website to calculate it. there would be a difference, but not too bad when you see the photo.

i shot with a Voigtlander 35mm F1.2 on my A7r before i sold the kit. a almost shot permanently @ F/2.5-2.8 due to badly optimised sensor (for the Voigt). It was fine.

Isnt Nikon doing better for cheaper?

    ducks

    • +1

Nikon has no such lens and generally their lenses are bigger and not optically better than Sony. Sometimes they are bigger and worse e.g. 50mm 1.2. They have very good value cameras though like the z8. Sony iniststs on an absurd price for the comparable A1 which is 2k+ more than the Nikon. Even now that is its 3+ years old and superceded by a new model, the A1 is STILL more expensive than the Z8.

  • I've held this lens in my hand and it was absolutely massive, chonky, and heavy

    • +2

the weight of this lens is the same as RF24-70 2.8 which is insane, i would swap in a heartbeat if canon made a rf28-70 f2 mark 2 at 900g…

      • +1

E mount have so many great lenses.

I'll wait for an analog by Meike. Should be below 1k.

    • I doubt there will be anythign similar anytime soon. The chinese manufacturers have not really made any af zoom lenses yes so don't think they will be putting out an extreme design like this with similar performace and specs. Closes bet is sigma

      • No one believes in China until it comes to beat everyone for a fraction of their current price. Sigma still will cost thousands, China will make that hundreds.

        • +2

Give an example of one chinese manufacturers lens that "beats everyone for a fraction of the price"? to beat everyone it needs to have better or equal performance, similar or better specs and be cheaper. The chinese lens makers are good and improving but they are not yet at the level of the main brands. They will likely be just as good in the future but that may be few years.

          • -2

@qvinto: The fact that such brands as Meike exists, and comparison of it's history vs history of Sony lens. Same happened with Amazon vs Aliexpress, with OpenAI vs DeepSeek, same with portable houses, with electro cars, with cellphones, with..

            • +1

@Ozzster: Noone doubts that they will achieve parity eventually

If I am looking to buy a lens within 6 months, do you think the Chinese manufacturers have something available of the same quality within that time?

              • -1

@greatlamp: I haven't mentioned any timelines, so can't help with that. For me money is more important than time.

            • +2

@Ozzster: The hopium you're huffing is insane. That's like saying "the US, being the world leaders of innovation, are going to come out with a semiconductor to put in cameras that will be an AI camera capable of taking the exact photo you want it to".

"99% of all large tech firm in the last 50 years are from the US, so it's bound to happen".

The reality is thus far, China have not put out a camera lens with comparable features to the high-end of camera equipment. And frankly, I don't see Xi Jinping announcing that China will focus on making cutting-edge consumer camera gear(businesstoday.in)

              • -3

@frowny: According to Dxomark ranking, 2 out of top 3 smartphone cameras are made in China. Apple is just #4. Nothing really stops them from collaboration with Zeiss or any top brand to buy patents or develop something together for high-end segment. I don't know when, but I see this happening eventually. Either via purchase or via hackers, but they'll do it.

                • @Ozzster: DXOMark is basically only a good index of how little critical thinking a person is capable of.

                  • @frowny: Let's see what benchmark you can suggest for better indication.

                    • -2

@Ozzster: None? Literally use critical thinking?

Like actually think about what you're comparing without eating up the shit like you're a starving child in Ghana.

How much does smartphone camera quality hinge on the actual quality of glass, coatings, the 'name brand of Hassblad or Zeiss on the phone', sensor or just the post-processing?

How much of it hinge on actual genuine personal preference? Reality is the majority of people can't pick a "good" photo from a "good" camera even if they tried. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRoTOE3FqT0

How much does smartphone camera quality actually impact mirrorless camera quality?

Is basically anyone else in the entire world making camera sensors other than Sony and Canon currently?

                      • @frowny: Okay, I'll reply one last time because you are beyond respectable discussion, but we need to close the topic.

I asked to give a better benchmark. You failed. You gave results of votes that don't even include the brands that won in the Dxomark rating. Yes, Google is good, but in DXO is it #2, the first and third are Chinese that Marques hasn't even checked. As any benchmark should do, there should be objective professional scoring, which Marques doesn't have anywhere near. Dxomark can be subjective sometimes, but at least we can see in what part and how.

Camera sensors can be not bad from Samsung and OmniVision, for example. And the same Sony can be installed in Chinese phones too. Use google to get more info before arguing about something you are not aware of.

I'm done with this conversation, find someone else to disrespect.

              • @frowny:

brother probably been sleeping under a rock, but Viltrox 13mm, 27mm and 75mm are all very, very good APS-C lenses. feel free to read reviews about it, they turned many sceptics into believers.

They also recently put out the LAB series, heard very good things about them too.

        • VILTROX's LAB series is well past the 1k mark lol, retails for 1.5k matter of fact.

it will not be in the hundreds. maybe somewhere between Sigma and their Lab series.

and yes, i am assuming Viltrox will be making it. They're the leading manufacturer.

Checked out your feed. Photos look good! So how is this lens going to fit into your kit for a wedding shoot? Will you just carry the one lens for most of the day?

    • Will be using this mainly for video. Video will turn out super sharp and the background will have this beautiful blur.
