      • Byd has compulsory services for warranty - what do you mean by this?

    • The boot space in the Atto 3 is pretty small - equivalent to what you'd expect in a VW Golf. It's really not suitable for luggage for 5 and a pram. In the Tesla it would be absolutely no problem, the boot is very spacious.

Also, BYD still have relatively expensive scheduled servicing and a very patchwork warranty last time I checked.

The biggest downside of the Model Y (according to my parent-of-2 friend) is that the sunroof really needs to have a shade.

    • +1

I rented both. I could drive the BYD easily, lock the car etc it didn't feel unfamiliar at all, I couldn't work out how to do simple things in the Tesla without google or YouTube. The Tesla just annoyed me to be honest. I bought an Atto 3. Recommend you do the same, everybody's preference is different and it depends what you use the car for. You'll never get a definitive answer reading stuff online. Some people love/hate each one for different reasons.

      • +2

No you can't simply recommend someone an ATT03 over model Y since they are NOT comparable at all.
Once is a real family car one is a small car.
If you recommend to someone with family with 2 kids they will be so disappointed.

        • We are a family, and love the Atto. Define "real family car"? Like I said, each to their own. Everyone has different preferences.

          • +1

@Pistoll: Yes each to their own.

But u were so confident to recommend atto to anyone…..

            • @ttt888: I see where this has gone wrong. I was recommending renting both, not one over the other.

        • +1

Where do you people come up with this crap, honestly?!?

        • +5

I think dude recommended to rent both and compare before you buy.

        • But he didn't!

      • Interesting. I don't mind having to figure out quirky new ways once to learn them. How did you rent them out of curiosity? Evee?

        • Yeah I'm a bit biased against the Tesla because I was in a rush when I first picked it up and I just didn't have the time to work it out. I did rent both separately for 2 days though through Sixt so got a good feel for what they're like. Great way to get a feel for both and pick which one you prefer.

These cars are getting so cheap you won’t need a battery replacement you’ll just recycle them like an iPhone in 10 years .
Samsung might offer $2k bonus trade in value and $1000 loyalty bonus

    • +8

You won’t need a battery replacement at all in these. The LFP batteries won’t degrade significantly over time. The rest of the car will be rusted and broken before then

  • +6

Cheaper EVs means more people buy them and more people build infrastructure for the growing market.
While I prefer Tesla myself, the market pressure and choice we get here thanks to BYD is only a good thing.

  • -8

    Burn Your Driveway.. ooh yeah

    • Just like the petrol bomb.. ooh yeah

  • So it’s not even cheaper than the 2023 car this time last year?

    • Tell me one thing that was cheaper this time last year..

      • This car was with gov rebates

        • +1

I stuffed my question up. I meant something that is cheaper now compared to this time last year

  • I hope they get a lot cheaper now that EU and US are going to implement extra taxes on chinese EVs, to protect their own brands. Since australia doesn't have anything to protect they likely won't follow and that would allow some of the stock to be now allocated for australia. That's what I'm hoping for. And i need the price to crash down to $30k, until then i'll sit on the sidelines and wait.

  • Id spend the extra 10k and get a model Y

    • +3

dumb ppl are born every minute

    • +6

You should have explained yourself else you get attacked by others.
Ok I explain on your behalf:
You are spending 10K extra not for tesla brand but model Y is significantly a bigger car than an atto so fits a typical 2 kids family.. and larger boot to carry stuff on trips etc.
Also telsa no compulsory service for warranty and also you deals directly with Telsa and not the local dealers.
Its a nicer car in your opinion.

      • +6

The Atto 3 would suit a family of 4 no dramas and how do I know this? Because we and many other families have Atto 3’s and it’s more than adequate.

You know what else we have? CarPlay and Android Auto, charging cables included, V2L, driver instrument display, no charge on premium connectivity and a vehicle that is inspected annually that helps avoid many complaints I see from Tesla owners on issues that would have been picked up during a service internal.

There were go, I explained on behalf of those who chose a BYD over a Tesla, like we did.

        • +1

dont do that - Tesla fanboys will never accept they paid premium for an inferior car

          • @botchie: I wouldn’t say an inferior car but certainly not as superior as the Tesla cultists like people to believe. Each to their own at the end of the day but the constant “for $10K more” crap is getting a bit long in the tooth and yet we see it in every single EV post that isn’t a Tesla but you don’t see the BYD eliteist’s taking over those posts.

        • +2

Is there much benefit to CarPlay/android over Teslas computer + bluetooth connection to phone?
I haven't used CarPlay but borrowed a Tesla and enjoyed its computer thingy. Built-in maps and Spotify is 95% of what I use my phone for in the car.

And the way Tesla automatically switches off and then back on just as you open the doors is very cool. You don't see or perceive any shutdown or startup, similar to closing and opening the lid on a MacBook.
The first few times I had to check if I'd actually left the car on, because it seemed like the music had been playing the entire time I was at the shops, it can be that seamless.

It's a tiny feature, but one I'd love to see in BYDs. That and one-pedal driving.
That said, it makes even more sense for Tesla to quit being stubborn and improve their mobile integration

      • Tesla y isn’t that big.

        • i have both Tesla is bigger than the BYD.

      • that makes sense, but no Elon Musk, thank you

  • +3

Why is everyone going on about Tesla? The Model Y is a way better vehicle and bigger, so expecting Tesla to price match is just strange.
How are existing Atto 3 owners going theirs? Rust issues or excessive wear a tear an issue or not? I know the Batman tyres are poop, hopefully they’ve upgraded on newer model. The internet forums are full of overly defensive people who don’t like anything questionable mentioned about their Chinese EV… So it’s difficult to get a balanced longer term review.

    • Why is everyone going on about Tesla?

Because for some reason it's become a dumb political tribal BS, and everyone has to pile on. It happens every time there's an EV deal, and it's super tiring.

      • +1

It’s because Tesla has set the standard and are the benchmark the rest are compared against.

    • +1

And yet Australian Tesla’s are built in China, go figure. You’re going on about the Model Y in a BYD posted deal, just how every other EV deal posted that isn’t a Tesla turns out.

Tesla isn’t the be-all-end-all and there are other perfectly viable options outside of them.

      • Model Y isn’t in the same category as an Atto 3. Seal and model 3 are but not these 2. I’d have a model Y over any BYD available in Aus.

  • buy now before Aus government follows USA and introduces Tariffs

    • +4

What argument could they make to fairly introduce tariffs? We don't have a car industry in Australia anymore

      • argument is that we are USA puppet and we do as they tell us

    • +2

Almost impossible unless we are in official cold war with china.

We have no car industry to protect so no excuse.. So if any oz govt silly enough to propose a tariff will be asking for a massive retaliation.
LOL aussie are already paying so much for cars! it would be suicide for any govt to do this.

Also BYD and MG smart they use australian dealers to sell their cars. So there are large number of dealers providing local jobs etc etc and they take a massive profit for themselves too.

So yeah.. they will be lobbying canberra from implementing any tariff.

LOL even the Chemist association could beat the govt into submission with the double prescription initiative. Govt have to give them $$$. . ahahah too funny.

      • With Oz govt attitude towards X I doubt they have any incentive to protect Tesla.

        It’s absurd.

  • +4

Plenty of 2nd hand BYD ATTO 3s with less than 20k kms for 40k. Save yourself 10k and get practically the same car. There’s not enough of an upgrade to justify spending 10k extra….

    • But they won’t have the new car smell :(

      • +2

And they will have the terrible cheap batman tyres and the smaller infotainment screen

        • Neither of those seem like a real problem. The Batman tyres still work fine but would need replacement in a year anyway

          • +1

@choofa: I’ve had my BYD for 2 years and Batman’s going strong

        • +2

          Tyres = $800
          Infotainment upgrade OEM = $500

          Hmmm…

      • Hmmm yeah, definitely worth 10k that smell (especially since it lasts for the better part of 1 month)

    • There is 39 on car sales. Most over $40k

      • Many at 40k or under as well with low kms. Better off getting those

        • +1

          None in vic
I don’t see many people offloading these cheap yet.
Maybe after the leases start to expire in 18 months there will be a lot more

  • I don’t understand why people are buying BYDs now. The resale price is going to absolutely tank once they start shipping cars with autonomous driving.

    https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Automobiles/Electric-vehicl…

They already have a conditional permit to test in New Zealand.

    https://www.iame.com.au/byd-breaks-ground-with-conditional-p…

    • +4

well you can say this about ICE cars too.. lol!!! LOL basically every car that don't have autonomous driving.

      • Which ice car manufacturers are investing $14 billion into autonomous driving?

    • -2

any EV you buy now will tank in resale price - Tesla the most, whoever buys Tesla better be prepared to lose most of the value of your car

    • +1

I suspect people are buying them to drive

  • +2

48 K for Seal Premium, will wait a while .

  • What’s the build quality of these Chinese products, do they rattle and shake after a few weeks?

    • +1

nope, build quality is actually better than US and others

    • +2

Coming from someone who has owned various premium/high-end/luxury vehicles, my BYD Seal has no rattles no noises, the only car that i have had that was better at blocking outside noise was my Hyundai Genesis, but Seal is pretty not far behind.

    • +1

An ice car will rattle and shake for the rest of the it lifetime. A poor fitted NVH ev car will have some turbulence and rattle somewhere cos the electric motor is so quiet.

  • +4

I’m sorry but that interior is just ridiculous levels of cringe

    • +2

      Apology accepted

    • 100000% agree and the exterior…

  • Wait for Model 3 to price beat…

  • +2

Isn't the whole point of the EV Fringe benefit tax incentive to drive demand (especially for fleets) and create a cheaper secondary market around 2027?

  • -1

They can't even make the web page correct, how can you expect them to build a solid car.

    • +4

Hopefully the website and the cars are not all made by the same people!

    • What does this even mean?

    • What about when bank website has issues and cant gain online access, can you trust them to protect your money???

  • I haven’t looked at all comments but does anyone have one of the BYD 2023 models but who also owns or has driven a Tesla?

I have a Tesla and need a second car, can’t go back to ICE, but also not keen on the Musk train.

My wondering of other non Tesla cars is:
    * charging time and range. Real world would you get 400km out of it? Also is battery degradation on par with others?
    * support from BYD for any servicing, repairs etc. how does this rate?

    Cheers

    • +1

I don't have a BYD but cross-shopped extensively before getting my Model 3.

Real world range for the Extended Range version of the Atto 3 is ~350km at highway speeds, according to owners in Australia and NZ. I expect it would vary a bit depending on climate, road conditions and terrain. Charging 10% to 80% DCFC takes about 35 minutes.

    • +3

Just that interior is enough reason to get a Tesla.
      It's horrid.

  • +1

    Bought on 29/5/24, RIP

  • +4

Model 3 owner here (on my second one now, I love it). Have driven the Atto 3 extensively. Personally my biggest issues were - no auto wipers, no one pedal driving, far too many buttons, quite slow (compared to the Tesla) and the crappy batman tyres (which have been replaced). If you can get past that then it's very very attractive at this price point.

    • +1

Nice insight. You forgot to mention the Tesla autopilot being superior to BYD’s.

  • Love that they are doing electric but my personal opinion is the BYD doesn’t look good. I feel like they’re trying to be too futuristic.

  • I haven't seen one IRL, but looking at some youtube reviews, the interior looks a little too busy. wtf do they put red strings along the door line to holds bottles and such?

    • the strings are actually tuned to play smoke on the water. Best feature of the car.

After a year of owning one, I pay extremely little attention to the interior when I drive (although I didn't mind it in the first place). It's like how the back of it is pretty ugly as far as cars go, I only really notice it when I see other atto's on the road.

      • +2

We are over Smoke on the Water in the Atto.. My 12yo is now working on Under Pressure by Queen.

  • +1

Nice car but hate that interior. It looks so tacky!

  • Remember when Elon sacked 80% of Twitter's staff, everyone said that's the end, how will it survive.

Guess what, it made no difference other than saving Elon a tonne in wages. Pretty smart dude.

    • +5

Yeah he is super smart by being forced to pay $44B for twitter

      4D chess this guy

  • Tesla vs BYD. Which should I get? Go.
