Neither , get a car with an engine , long term it's cheaper and don't have to worry about the battery replacement

      • long term it's cheaper

        Doubt.

and don't have to worry about the battery replacement

Yeah just servicing every damn part.

  • Where's the colour Green?

  • How’s the insurance premiums on these?

Was just reading that in the USA, data for the first quarter of this year shows EVs have 30% higher insurance claims because of the higher cost of repairs compared with ICE vehicles. That might be because repairers are still coming to grips with the technology, but they showed that labour costs on EV repairs averaged 3 hours versus two hours for ICE. This was translating to 12% higher premiums.

What’s the privacy like? Does it beam your details and travel to China?

    • +1

Yeah the Chinese will take great amusement about you driving distances that could be walked.

What about the red light district? Will I get extorted?

  • I was considering either ATTO3 or Sealion 6 phev. My daily driving distance is less than 20kms. But wonder how s the quality of BYD cars since I read that lots of warranty claims in China esp for hybrid models. Any reliable info or first hand experience abt this? Thanks.

    • There are several people in this thread, and in other related threads, who are current owners of BYD EVs. I expect a few of them could share their experiences. I've only heard good things so far, but I haven't lived with one either.

Hybrids are still a new thing for BYD (in Australia at least) so you're unlikely to get much feedback from current owners there.

As an owner of the Atto3 for over 9 months, I can say the build quality is good. No panel gaps, no rattles or noises while driving. Issues like rust build up can only be known in few years but so far no visible signs of any issues. The software side of things, not the best quality but has improved quite a bit through OTA updates since my purchase.

If you drive less than 20kms a day BEV will be a great option. You could be spending zero on fuel if you just charge during the 3 hour free electricity window on Ovo energy EV plan or with Solar if you have it at home.

I also drive less than 100kms during weekdays but I find the Atto3's range limiting for weekend trips. For e.g. I did a trip to Canberra from Melbourne recently and I was hoping to finish each way with just two charges. However, at 110kms speed and the hilly terrain I was only getting around 280kms per charge which resulted in 7 hours driving time and 4 hours charging/waiting time. The DC fast chargers are no cheaper than petrol at this rate of consumption. And I can only dream of doing much longer trips without an overnight stay in the Atto.

If you use your car for road trips like me, I would go for phev option which gives you best of both worlds. However, from what I read phev's have higher servicing costs and multiple points of failures due to the number of components involved in the technology used.

      • Yes I'm seriously thinking off either Sealion 6 or Mazda Phev (almost 20k more tho) through Novated lease. While researching Sealion 6 I bumped into this vid:

        https://youtu.be/Ht9MuTYXsTE?si=i-Gy4GxMl0jdbcJs

According to my Chinese friend, Sealion 6 is Song Plus which has the highest warranty claim in that video. Also Mazda will retain much better resale value. Thanks.

I would prefer to replace my short-distance commuter (small car) for an electric than replacing the family car.
When at least the Dolphin is below 30k, then I will consider it

    • So why didn’t you post in the Dolphin deal instead if you have absolutely no interest in an Atto 3?

  • Are y'all really reading all that from Jimmy vs 1st-Amendment post here?

If so, can summarise who won the keyboard warrior medal?

Life is too short to read keyboard warrior bs… I just wish the 'Hide User Comments' list could be expanded to include more users 😂

    Isolated incident …yes
Just gotta be aware and informed

Honestly, most of the story seems innocuous enough. It's not unusual for a relatively new car to have a failure as a result of a manufacturing fault, and BYD were happy to repair it under warranty. I don't see how it can be called a "nightmare" but that's news.com.au for you.

I'm not sure what to think about the owners thinking they're entitled to a full refund - seems like an over-reaction.

The whole thing about the dashcam footage being deleted seems like a red herring to me.

      • +1

From what I see from the article, BYD was helpful and agreed to warranty repair until the owner started demanding full refund. The owner must have thought if they could get a full refund on the 50k+ they paid in 2022 they can get a new car for even cheaper and save some cash too. I would at least give that a try myself if I end up in that situation.

Hope it didn't stop in the middle of the road.

That story was posted 4 comments above 8 hours before yours, and to be honest it doesn't reflect badly on BYD at all IMO.

And the article makes it quite clear that it didn't stop in the middle of the road, if you read it.

    "Build your dreams" rofl

    • I don't think the full 'Build Your Dreams' translates well into the western world. A simple 'BYD' looks more minimal and less tacky

      • I believe they have changed the rear nameplate on the latest model to get rid of the full script, and they now just have "BYD" on the rear.

  • If you want a larger sized SUV, wait for the Sealion 7. It's gonna come between July and December, larger sized battery with base model having 70 kWh.

  • i just ordered the atto3 yesterday. wife initially was going to get dolphin as she didnt want to spend much as i have a new VW amarok ti500 style ute we can use but she found dolphin was to small so ended up with atto 3. we got it for 46886.66. no idea how we got it cheaper than this deal listed. would have looked at asome other cars like tesla/hyundai kona ect but she didnt want to be up by 60k so byd it was. we have solar so i think it will only cost us roughly $10-15 a week in running cost vs the 70 she spends now. If i run kids to sport locally with it to that probably saves a bit on my fuel. Also bought it through my business so get to claim the vehicle to
