      both get!

  • With all the bad reviews on the Sonos app recently. Is there another reliable Multi room wi-fi speaker system I can get into?

    • +10

Still SONOS system is pretty good in terms of multiroom configuration. Think the app issues caused by the major update will be resolved eventually.

      • +1 my 4 room setup (Arc + Surrounds, bedroom lamp, kitchen roam & Play:1 deck) has been working fine on the new app although sometimes skipping, volume adjustment etc can have a 5 or so second delay. Seems to be getting better each update… still it's not as straightforward when grouping but will get me head around that eventually.

If it's of any benefit the app has always been terrible.

Seriously though, while the new app is definitely bad and a downgrade from the already bad app we had, it's usable and it should hopefully get better. You can also minimise its use to just speaker setup/configuration and grouping, if you use something that can play music directly to Sonos like Spotify, Tidal or an Apple device with Airplay 2.

I have at least one speaker in every room and while they do cause more frustration than I'd like, when they work it's totally worth it. They sound great and multiroom audio is fantastic!

If you want to get in, buy when they're on sale like this but just be aware that there will be times when you want to throw them out the window :)

The OG sonos app from early 2010s were actually very good. I've had sonos since 2012 (yes imported from US prior to them becoming available in AU) and the apps were snappy, everything you need was on the main page. Granted back then not as many integrated services.

The new app launch should have been delayed, but obviously corporate had other ideas. No favourite self added radio station (unless you use a workaround), lack of sleep timer, irresponsive volume control were the biggest gripe for me as I use those features the most.

For now I am still using the old app, but it will just be a matter of time you are forced onto the new app. My speakers already have upgraded to 16.2 and eventually sonos disables functions on app unless you upgrade the app to match the speaker firmware.

      • Yeah, thrown them out the windows, what I feel like doing on a number of occasions. Worst still when the tech service dept weren't much help. Three years ago, I signed up to the 5G broadband and a supplied 5G modem WiFi router. The Sonos system decided to go on a holiday. When I rang tech for help, he or she told me it's not compatible with the 5G. I said that is the transmission 5G network nothing to do with the function of the WiFi router that it needs to connect to. That person was so stubborn, it was beyond me how Sonos put him up there. I ended ringing up the US number. Sometimes I thought to myself why do I keep adding more of these temperamental speakers. I started with Sonos 2.1 some twelve years ago, now I have like 8 of them.

I think Sonos is the best of a bad bunch. I went with the Yamaha MusicCast system a few years ago then they decided to pull out of the game without warning.
I plan on replacing it all with Sonos since it's the only player that is dedicated to multi-room wi-fi audio.

Edit: Although based on some comments here, I may just go the old fashioned reliable wired way.

      • No need to replace your system. Get a Raspberry Pi, install picoreplayer with LMS, and use one of the many controller apps to play music to your Yamaha system and synchronise with other DNLA/Upnp/Chromecast/Airplay systems around the house.

That sounds like effort. I just want something to work out of the box and never have to think about it again.

          • @1st-Amendment: If you’re in Vic I’ll gladly pay to take your yamaha musiccast off you :)

          • @1st-Amendment: I'm not sure what issue you're having, I still have MusicCast app working. Albeit for a single device.

            • @craving:

I'm not sure what issue you're having

              I have two issues:
              1. I've got 5 speakers and they work well most of the time, but occasionally they just don't work, or some speakers drop out of a zone, or in rare cases I've had one speaker automatically turn itself up to full volume, and I can't turn it down. Hard rebooting fixes this but it's a pain to have to go and unplug and plug everything back in.
              2. The product has been discontinued so can't buy new ones. I want to upgrade to bigger speakers but have no option to do so, so have to replace the lot which will be expensive.

      • Did the same with MusicCast as it showed real promise and a requirements was to include a higher amp to drive a home theatre room that will play nicely with the rest of the house. They appear to be in limp mode with some 'new' products but miss the mark by quite a bit…..

    • what are the reviews?

I've got sonos ecosystem set up, not seeing any issues at all?

    • The app is great! So much more intuitive. Only hate I have is that it sometimes takes a while to refresh

      • +1

I find the new app very un-intuitive. It's getting better, but so far I just haven't come to terms with it. Seems to take 4 or 5 actions to do anything that I want to do, that would previously have taken 2 or 3. I believe it will allow customisation of the UI that should make this all better, but I haven't gone into that yet.

I used alarms across multiple rooms as one of my key features, and have to adjust them most days due to changing work timetables. To have that "disappeared" when the app was updated was very very frustrating and left a bad taste. The other pieces are the sleep timers, the integration with some of the different apps (I find the pocket casts integration very hit and miss now), and the general slowness (sometimes it takes me upwards of a minute to start an audiobook or to switch between chapters) as super frustrating. The old app was far from perfect, but the new one has been a step back. Hopefully it's just time before we have a much better setup.

(System: 3 X IKEA symfonisk, 1x era 100 dotted around the house. I actually love the system and would like a couple more. Also wish more apps would allow direct connection, like Spotify does, as that would save me from the Sonos app!)

        • +1

I almost never use the Sonos App, I use Apple airplay with apple music.

And at night my kids like audiobooks so we use google play books app, again no need for Sonos app.

I only really use Sonos app for Sonos radio and even then very rarely.

What am I missing out on?

    • +2

I think that’s a temporary issue. They scrabbling like crazy to fix it up.

      • Yup, they are open to feedback and are trying to make amends.

Better they didn't veer so far from a system that just worked, but good to see that they are admitting they might have got it wrong in a few ways.

    • Audio Pro is definitely worth checking out. I would argue it is much better value, they just don't have a soundbar if that's something you're after.

    • The app is trash, but outside of setup and config I never open it.

Unless you are going to set up a ROON system or take your chances with a Google solution (which is annoying to configure and they could drop at any point in time… but works pretty well!), there are no great alternatives. They all want to lock you into an ecosystem and they all have sketchy apps, questionable longterm support and their own headaches. .

    • I have four of these. I haven't used the Sonos app since I set them up. They work great with Apple AirPlay and other systems.

Is it possible for JB HIFI to do another wave of discounts across the store before EOFY?

  • I've got the Sound bar/sub woofer from about 7 years ago and wanting to move out from the Sonos system into something more affordable. Loved the sound quality of it but just wanting to buy a more affordable soundbar for a new place. As long as it sounds okay and can stream Spotify, that's my only requirements. Any recommendations?

  • +1

Been very impressed so far with the ERA 100.

  • If not upgrading soon, would strongly recommend 2 Era 100s. One 300 won't give the same experience when connected to a soundbar. For a lone speaker, one 300 should be fine

  • Is this ATL? Will it go cheaper ?

    • Probably. One day. Who knows when?

  • From what I read, the Era 100 isn't compatible with google assistant - anyone have any further insight on this? Is this still the case or has there been an update?

Would like to get a few of these to put around the house but needs to be able to control my google home.

    • +1

You can only use the Sonos voice assistant, or Alexa.

I moved all of my smart home devices to Alexa and prefer it over Google Home, things happen a lot quicker - for example if I ask to turn a light off, Alexa will turn it off then tell me it did it. Google will think about it, tell me it is doing it, then do it, which adds ~3 to 5 seconds to the operation.

    • If you have Google's (mini, home hub etc) you can set them to play on different devices. Eg i have it set to play music on the sonos surround and when asking to play a music video i have it set to play on tv, which is obviously connected to surround for the sound. Before setting this up when my kids asked it would always play music and videos on the google home.

  • Which would be better to use as rear surrounds? I have the Arc + Sub at the moment.

    • 2x Era300 if you can spare the coin, otherwise 2x Era100 or 2x IKEA Symfonisk bookshelf speakers if you want to go even cheaper (they are re-badged Sonos)

      • I'm thinking that this is just a stop gap for the time being until I do move into our new place that has a dedicated media room where I will get an actual surround sound system. So maybe the Era 100s will do alright.

I just came here to say I’ve been a loyal Sonos customer since 2007 (had a mate bring it back from US when I lived in London). I’m still using original ZP80 to stream audio from my PC to other Sonos speakers using S1 app.

Who can claim software support for hardware that’s 17 years old!!! Anyone remember Squeezebox from Logitech?

I hope the app issues will be resolved.

  • +2

@ OP: the 300 only uses the "main" driver if you have them in a stereo pair. If you only have the one, it uses the two side drivers instead to get you stereo sound. That's why I went for 2 x 100 instead.
I'm not going to buy something that expensive and not use the main driver, and I'm unlikely to buy 2 x 300 for every room I want them in.

  • I currently got Marshal Acton II but wife nicked it so I was going to buy Marshal Acton III. Are these comparable in sound quality?

  • Thanks! Bought two for the shed.

Now waiting on a similar deal on a mini sub

    • +1

      Thanks again OP.

Delivered and set up. Loving them already.

Definitely preferring 2x era 100 vs the 1x era 300 that I returned.

  • With new app, I've been unable to use my Sonos Move in wifi for approx. 1 month. Tech support have acknowledged the issue, are unable to provide a solution (I've tried all their suggestions multiple times) and can't say when it will be rectified. I intend on moving from Sonos to Audio Pro asap.

  • Thanks. Got it today.Very happy with the sound given the size. Might get second one to make it a sterio pair. Top cash back probably gave the push.

  • Thanks OP. Awesome upgrade from the Echo 4th gen

  • i am wondering IF the black friday sale better than this price?

Would ever go lower than this?
