  • I thought paypal was owned by ebay? Why are they encouraging use of a competitor?

    • eBay originally opened the door to Paymate as a pre-emptive move to stave off potential RBA action against forcing users to offer PayPal. It's basically a token presence - hasn't harmed PayPal because of inertia and eBay still having the means to nudge an overwhelming majority of users in a given direction.

It's not clear this particular offer is endorsed by eBay.

    • Why are they encouraging use of a competitor?

What encouragement? You do realise that this is a Paymate promotion, not an eBay one?

  • How does paypal rates compared to this for seller??

  • +1

Paymate generally have the same fees as Paypal. I have Paymate and Paypal as options on my listings but not even .1% of people pay using Paymate.

AFAIK you can replace Paypal with Paymate as the only payment option

  • And when someone does pay via Paymate, it doesn't seem to reflect this in My eBay. It doesn't move from "pending via Paymate". Maybe that's fixed now?

  • Not sure if Paymate have any dispute resolution system…but Paypals resolution system is pretty robust.

    • THey do

      • Yeah - with Paymate there is NO protection for Sellers against Chargebacks.

But at least there won't be many Buyer claims, because each one costs the Buyer $50 and they are only allowed to make 2 per year in total.

All it does is transfer ALL of the claims into Card Chargebacks, which makes the seller lose out HEAPS. At least with Paypal, you are covered providing you have proof of shipment.

With this stuff, "beware of greeks bearing gifts"

    • PayPals dispute system is terrible for the most part though. :/

  • It's not until you deal direct with banks, you realize how old PayPal is with disputes

  • Paymate used to charge buyers a transaction fee, which is why they never got anywhere.

  • Nothing but free is acceptable with payments. AFAIK RBA is on the way to
a system of instant micro payments. I am looking forward to watching PayPal
lose most of their market share in Australia.

    • Interesting

    • Receiving payments from a credit card will never be free.

  • Paymate was recently sold to a new investor. Since than a lot of changes have been made. This is OK. But I have noticed that by offering Paymate as you're only online payment method (and not using PayPal) the amount of unpaid items have increased by 30%.

This is due to people not feeling comfortable with this new provider which 90%+ have never used before.

  • Which Android devices work with "Paymate OnTheGo" hardware?

Which phones, & which tab's? Must it be connected via 3G, etc.? Or does WiFi work, too?
