Im with them and no drama's. Can recommend

  • +6

Be very careful with OVO. They advertise cheap rates on energymadeeasy but when you go to their website those deals are actually not available. Instead they will only give you the option of very similar looking deals but with additional fees and charges that mean its actually not cheap at all.

    • Their advertised rates are not even good in my area; CovaU is ~$830/year on advertised rates (but I have a 27% discount, so $606) and OVO would be $930, 50% more. I'd switch for three almost free months but it seems like CovaU isn't doing the discounts any more so no guarantee I'd be able to get back on a good rate again.

    • +1

I got exactly what they showed on energymadeeasy & elsewhere, no dramas & customer service has been good

      • +1

I see the same THE ONE plan, but the prices the energy made easy website uses from OVO are different to their actual prices(for me) so the website can't correctly calculate and compare the plan, and over a year will be quite different. The difference for me is 2c/kwh to 5c/kwh depending on time of day, CL2 feed is also 2c kwh more expensive on OVO's website

        • yeah dunno mate maybe try contacting them to discuss

        • Same happened for me. And if you follow the sign up process via Cashrewards/CIMET comparison website, the plan you end up on is totally different to what you think you are signing up for online. Their excuse was that "tariff type and rates vary depending on distributor and your address". Resulted in being welcomed to a plan with totally different set of rates (incl. complex demand charges in addition to the /kWh usage rate). Unbelievable that they can operate like that!

  • +2

    Anytime unit rate (¢/kWh): 27.39

    High Season Demand (c/kW/day) 10.956
    Low Season Demand (c/kW/day) 3.828

High season demand is charged between 2-8pm on business days between Nov - Mar and 5-9pm on business days between Jun - Aug.
Low season demand is charged between 2-8pm on business days between Apr - May and between Sep - Oct.

Does anyone know if the high and low season demand rates are on top of the anytime rates? I'm assuming so cause I can't imagine them charging 3c between 2-8pm…
Or is that dodgy method that calculates your total bill according to one small window of time that you use the most electricity?

    • +1

Yes, it's on top of the c/kwH rate. I called my previous energy provider and asked to be taken off the demand plan. I didn't realise upon signup that it was an option. When I signed up to this OVO deal, I didn't have a demand charge.

    • +2

I first learnt of this 'demand tariff' when I moved recently.
What a utter SHAM, disguised under the banner of 'helping Australians'.
      An absolute RIPOFF.

Stay the heck away from demand tariffs. Ask your EP for a non demand tariff plan. If they ooo and aaaah, just leave, immediately.

Except in very niche use cases, IMO, I don't see this being helpful in any way at all. Dodgy AF.

      • I just learned about demand tariff yesterday when I almost switched to Ovo's 3 free hours…my current AGL plan does not have demand tariff so I never knew anything about it.

        • Almost? Do you didn't switch to their three free hours?

  • +9

Yes they charge dodgy demand tariffs. They're literally charging you for energy you don't use (in this case the penalty is based on your highest peak 30-minute period of consumption on one day each month during the peak demand windows). Good luck to anyone who can estimate that… https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-06-03/demand-power-tariffs-…

    • +2

And there's no way https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/ can estimate the true cost either, which is going to be more.
I knew power companies would try something to obfuscate the real higher costs from the Government website just didn't know what method they'd try.

      • +3

I checked my address and got

        Peak Demand (c/kW/day)
        15.236

So any 30min window between 4-9pm, if my max usage power is 5 kW (could be more in summer months with aircon), I need to pay an extra 0.15236 * 5 kW * 30 day = $22.85 per month

  • If you change from someone to thse ppl do you still get credit as /"(c) the contract must be your first electricity market contract for your premises;"

    • I could be wrong but it seems to allude 'first Ovo contract'. Interested to see if someone find out other ways

  • Does anyone know OVO accept Amex? Or auspost bill pay?

    • -3

No to Amex. I just checked.

    • +1

They accept Amex, I have direct debit set up on my amex with them

      • “ Make a card payment: You can do this in your online account or by calling us on 0330 303 5063 Monday to Friday from 9am till 5pm. We accept all major credit and debit cards (except for American Express).”

Only going on what they said.

        • Well, my amex statement and OVO app payments page begs to differ.

          • @crankyjay: Good to know thank you. I’ll be switching over knowing that. Cheers!

            • +2

@Fatboy74: I haven't been charged but when I switched using econnex a few days ago I gave my amex details and their direct debt email has all my amex details. So I am assuming they are going to charge my amex.

Using econnex via cashrewards you get $90 cashback + 150 for 3 months, you can churn to another deal after that, pretty good deal.

              • @denserham: Awesome thanks :)

              • @denserham: Hi, do you know if the rates quoted in econnex included Gst? Seems like my AGL plan is still cheaper for my area.

All day tarriff : 23. 42c include GST
                Daily usage: 82.36c Inc GSt

                Thanks

        • -1

          Pretty sure they take Amex.

  • Do these guys have a free for three hours tariff?

    • They do, the rates are a bit over 12% more expensive than the non 3 free hour plan and 21 hours is about a 12% discount on 24. So its really all depending on how you minmax your useage. gotta mine some crypto for 3 hours a day or something.

    • +1

Yep. 50% of my usage is between 11 and 2.
Car charge, washing, dishwasher and the rest.
Also have 4 referrals and welcome credit taking about 40 dollars off a month.
Family of 4, ev car, pool, no solar. Bills less than 100 a month.

      • Wow, bills less than 100 a month is very impressive… Is that after all the discounts and credit or just normal usage? Thanks

        • Is about 115 a month, then down to 80 something with credit

  • +2

Maybe try OVO. Use their free 3 hours in the middle of the day. Run all your hot water then, and driers and dishwashers then. Might make a small dent. They do have an EV plan also with 8c kWh from 12am - 6am too. But higher rates outside of those hours I think.
Otherwise keep churning signup deals. AGL has $200 credit, AMPOL $150.

    • this post IS Ovo! 🤣

      • Haha weird, it was meant to be a reply to Mazozb’s comment.

  • -1

Connection fee Flat rate: $108.00. This is a charge from your distribution company. OVO Energy will only ever pass the exact cost through to you. Site attendance - A fee (inc GST) may be charged for the re-energisation of power to the site.

So, if they charge $108 just to connect, effective bonus is $150 - $108 = $42. Right?

    • +1

no, if your property is already connected via another retail provider and you are just moving plans, you won't get charged (I moved from AGL, and didn't get charged a connection fee)

      • interesting, energymadeeasy says $19.71 for a connection fee and $50.80 for disconnection. on the ovo website it says "no exit fees"…. assuming the 50.80 is waived?

        • +1

This is for connecting and disconnecting from the grid. Not changing providers.

      • @crankyjay How long did it took to move from AGL to OVO? I am with AGL now, and sign up OVO last night (10th June), From email I received

        Offer Acceptance date:
        10th June 2024
        Term:
        12th June 2024 onwards

Does it mean from tomorrow I'll be with OVO?

        • +1

I did mine a couple of months ago, the email showed:

          Offer Acceptance date:
          4th April 2024
          Term:
          8th April 2024 onwards

I was with OVO on the 8th and started seeing usage stats for that day (usage stats arrived a couple of days later), so yeah looks like you should be with OVO by tomorrow and should be able to see hourly usage stats for the 12th of June in a couple more days in the app.

  • Will switching providers at this time potentially do me out of the $1000 QLD rebate or $300 federal rebate??

    • Get in before July 1st

  • -1

    Drake has an energy company?

    • -1

      everybody say ov-hooooe

  • Looks like the free 3 hours is not available if you have solar thats over 5kwh feed in capability. (NSW) anyone have any insights into this

  • Can I move from AGL and be eligable for this?

    • Same question

    • I think yes, because I am with AGL atm and signed up for ovo last night, I got email confirmation

"Thanks for joining OVO Energy – we’re glad to have you with us!

You'll be receiving $150 account credit paid over 3 months."

      • question is if it will actually be applied on the account?

        • +1

My account activated today and I can see "Current balance: $48.87 CR" , so I guess my first months $50 has been applied. Because no direct debit yet from my bank account.

  • They have really bad reviews.

    • +1

3.8 on google. Most people here seem to rate them. I haven’t had any issues. Their service team seem happy to be flexible. Eg honour referral and welcome credit, pause bill smoothing payments as you request. I haven’t paid a bill since about the first month of being with them.

  • I dont see plan with solar feed?

    • They all have solar rates.
      Premium and standard rates.

  • Not worth it for me. I compared to my current rates with Origin and it works out to be over $40 a quarter more expensive.Sign up bonus won't even cover the additional cost for 12 months.

    • +1

Always good when you find you’re on a good rate!

  • Good timing. I've just received an e-mail from Dodo:

    -
    Current rates
    Supply Charge 82.66 cents/Day
    General Usage 28.22 cents/kWh

Your new rates as of 01 July 2024
    Supply Charge 140.14 cents/Day
    General Usage 27.52 cents/kWh

Your solar FIT will change from 5c to 3.5c.

    -
Thank you for putting the deal up.

    • That is a huge jump in prices. I hate supply charge

  • website is kinda trash. refers to a page that is supposed to have a list of excluded suburbs which doesn't exist.

I emailed them about it and they sent me a link to an internal page with a list of suburbs they do service which also doesn't work and asks for a login?

emailed them again and they sent me, no shit, 20 full page screenshots images

if that's indicative of their computar skillz they've probably already had all the customer data stolen.

  • $50 credit in my account since sign up on Monday.

  • Signed up with also $130 from ShopBack. Hopefully that pays up too

    • Did you get 50 credit on your account? I am thinking to go via Cashrewards for 90 buvks cashback (econnex). Not sure if it stacks up.

      • +1

Yes u get 150 credit , 50$ first 3 months. I’ll also try referral as others have mentioned. U have to talk to OVO staff and give them the referral etc but I have not read completely the T&C of cashback

        • +1

          Awesome.. thanks mate

  • +2

Considered this the other night when SB was having their increased econex payout but with their estimated bill deal i chose not to take it up. Went with Alinta instead which had $100 credit plus $130 cashback from SB tracked also.

  • I can confirm that this stacks with 20000 bonus points offer from Virgin Money.

  • They keep charging your credit card after you close your account. They never paid me any of the $150, so i closed my account.

  • +2

    expired?

edit: looks like the $150 credit was removed, T&Cs do not mention it anymore..

I've signed up to Alinta Energy HomeSaver via ShopBack/Econnex now which currently offers $130 for electricity churns (+$80 for gas), after 120 days. Ends in 7h22min..
Rates seems quite a bit lower than Ovo too..

  • Expired

  • this is expired but for future refrence does anyone know if these offers are stackable with cashrewards?

  • -1

I jumped on this back in May (but the comments are closed).
Signed up with a referral link from this page, but not seeing the 10$ discount applied anywhere. Ah well.

Got our first bill, 50$ credit is applied and some other discount that my wife was eligible for.
Peak demand is part of our bill, but it's only charged for 1 day.
Total out of pocket 34$ (116$ total bill before discounts), paying POST paid, I ain't giving them my card for direct debit after reading some of the stories here.
Wife logged into her account and now has almost 1000$ in credits, let's see what the next bill is like.
    So far so good.

    • How did you get $1000 in credit? A glitch?

      • +1

Qld residents receiving $1000 one off from QLD State Government.

  • Got email from OVO today and their rates have jumped and fit is now 3c looking to jump ship…
