Even with HA, these aren't local only like the homekit versions right?

    • I'm not sure of what you meant, but after adding them in HA, I can still access them in the meross app.

      • +2

see this comment from the 2-pack deal referring to homekit version.

The non-homekit version uses MQTT to talk to Meross server

        • I believe even with both versions you can use “Meross LAN” from the HACS store

      • With the HA installed, can you control them when you’re away from home by the Home App?

I've had three of these fail on me. They seem to have a limited lifespan which is accelerated if you use them for alway-on applications (i.e energy monitoring and not as a smart switch). When that happens they begin flickering multiple times a second turning the connected device on and off at the same rate. Seems to be consistent behaviour if you look at the low rating reviews.

    • Same situation for me as well and not just meross, other brands as well.

Check this comment/post referring to the capacitor issue

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15222075/redir

      • I did not know about that capacitor issue, thank you.

I have one v6 and it works but the LED doesn't light up green. I have two v8 and they are working fine.

  • Note that these are not compatible with Apple home.

they are when used with HA

Arlec $55 for 4 at Bunnings (grid connect). Looks like they have changed the shape of them from the ones I got but work well (+energy meter).

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/arlec-grid-connect-smart-plug-in…

    • Any reviews?

      • I used the og version (taller chassis) - of all my smart plugs from various brands, only this one and maybe a tapo one have survived over a year. What's more impressive is that I have one of these hooked up to a heater which draws the full 2400w - still going strong. One of the reviews of this newer mini version says it failed on high draw devices, though….

        • This is rated for 10A i believe, running a 2400W load means device is above or at the capacity, this is not advisable & recipe for disaster.

        • Yeah all my original ones (non-power meter) are still going strong too, not a lot to go wrong really (unless you are overloading them).
i didn't read all the reviews who knows, some may be for the older version. Haven't tested the newer ones.

    • I don’t believe these can be made to work in home assistant though

        Tuya.

        @rinzlertaken
        Yes check the link.

        • I've used the Tuya one. They work fine enough and fit in plugs.
I think they might default to OFF after a power loss… which is kind of annoying!

          • @Commodore64: Yeah just the norm ones, good go to plugs yo make devices smart (use them on coffee machine, active monitors, subwoofer, etc)..

It's probably safer that way in case you are out, and use less power. My smart bulbs come after power out, have to turn them off again.

  • Is Meross really any better than $12 Tuya Aliexpress options? I have a zigbee dongle and and bought up the ikea repeater ones without power monitoring recently and while I trust them more than my $1.50 welcome deal one, I need another of that smaller form factor

$12 each for Wifi doesn’t sound like a bargain to me

    • +1

The real bargain is not having a housefire :D

      • +1

I think the main benefit is Amazon's return process

      • im not suggesting powering always on high wattage devices on them, that’s what I would prefer the $12 ikea ones for

I guess it’s the difference between ‘smart’ and ‘automation’ - smart being every electric device can toggle and I can set things to automatically turn off. Automation might revolve a bit more around you not being home and has risks if you misconfigured and something came on without supervision

Don’t get me wrong I use both, but I treat aliexpress Tuya like a 10 y.o - I trust it to cook toast, but not to stay home all day without any supervision

        • +1

I wouldn't trust a generic Aliexpress item with the amount of juice that a toaster pulls.

          • @lbft: Better getting one at Bunnings, Australian certificate and tested.

Funny in Thailand whenever you plug something in there's a zap. I saw they are finally converting that mess of spaghetti power lines to underground in the touristy Streets in Bangkok (Sukhumvit/asok), almost fell off my chair.

          • @lbft: Yeah but if it cooks toast 100 times without burning your house down, you stop questioning it after a while

            • @freedomj: Why would you put a toaster on a Smart plug, still have up manually press down the toast to start it.. there safe certain devices you shouldn't connect, im sure it says that in the manual (although maybe not in the Chinese knock offs).

  • Newbie Qs: never used one of these.

I have some portable heaters in bedrooms that I would like to program to automatically switch off at say midnight, just in case they are left on. Would this work?

Also, I could turn off the power to the heaters from my phone instead of having to go into each bedroom and potentially waking the sleepers, right?

2000w heaters. I think the above is the only functionality I need. Any suggestion between meross, tuya, tp link, ikea etc?

    • +1

Yeah you can program these to turn on or off to you liking. You can also control these remotely.

  • Just received mine(Homekit version). I wouldn't buy it if anyone mentioned their ridiculous size…
