    • Worth the upgrade from 12100F?

      • -3

Value per dollar, no. It's 25% performance increase for 40% increase in value.

For actual use? Why not? May allow you to keep your PC for 1 more gen before needing to upgrade

Are you kidding… it's 6 core vs 4 core. No brainer really.

  • +2

Interesting fact… this i3 is on par with i9 9900K. Which I found very interesting.

    • Howhat?

    • +1

      Good old 14nm+++++++

    • How the hell can a 4 core CPU perform the same as a 8 core one? It defies logic.

      • Simple.. 1x 12100 CPU core is around 40% faster per 1Mhz then 1x 9900k CPU core

Now the 9900k is clocked higher so that helps it stay at the same level. Having more Mhz helps

Once you get to the 12900k clocked in the high 5 ghz its really the only thing giving it an edge vs a 12100… apart from a little more L2 Cache

        I'm buying a Zen5, 6 core 9600X with a B850 motherboard using DDR5 8000 when they come out..should be around 100% faster per 1Mhz vs 9900k

    • yet lads still want $200 for a 9900k

  • Whats the cheapest cpu mobo combo with integrated graphics?

      Locally https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/848641
CPU from Aliexpress might be slightly cheaoer

      • +1

You can get a cheap combo like that, but then you still need ram+ssd+case+psu, and that particular mobo doesn't have wifi or bluetooth if you need them, and no windows license if you need that.

If it's just basic computing, I reckon you would be better off with a mid range mini PC. Something like this has everything you need including USB Type-C for $350 on special at the moment (or shop around / wait for specials and you might get even better deals): TRIGKEY Mini PC, AMD Ryzen 5 5560U(6C/12T,Up to 4.3GHz) 8G DDR4 500G SSD Mini Desktop Computer, DP/HDMI/Type-C/Triple-Screen Display/ WiFi6/ BT5.2 Mini Computer, Business Mini PC - https://www.amazon.com.au/TRIGKEY-Mini-AMD-Ryzen-5560U/dp/B0…

Edit: There's so many cool little devices out there, like this: $267 for Firebat with Ryzen 5500U and 16gb ram and 512gb ssd - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005659248273.html

        • Hadn't even thought of that, you've opened up my mind. Thanks.

        • Not as good as the AMD but this INTEL isn't bad for $144

@figarow: That's a good price. If you don't need the proper 6 core performance then the N100 is as low as you would want to go, but it's meant to fine. I actually have an N100 mini PC sitting on my desk right now, but I haven't got around to using it yet (want to check it for malware before using it). Other posters say its mostly fine, a little stutter here and there maybe, but meh, sounds good to me. Alternatively if you can find a good price on N300 or N305 you would be laughing (it's got the same "efficiency only" CPU cores, but 8 instead of 4. Ryzen has proper cores).

Just make sure its got the connections you want. That one you posted has HDMI 2.0, so can do 4k60 apparently. I got one with USB-C PD, so I should be able to run it off my monitor with 1 cable because my monitor also has KVM built in. So this way I can use miniPC for browsing, then push 2 buttons and be on my gaming PC.

If you really want to think outside the box, you could hunt for a cheap Chromebook laptop with N300 in. And someone shared this yesterday, which looks awesome - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/848822

    • 12100 for $175 + cheap motherboard is not a bad deal… i like it more then the 5500GT as its a 54w part vs 64w for AMD and the 12100 is a faster CPU too.

Adding a cheap GPU on the 12100 in the future gives you better gaming performance…. 4 cors vs 6 cores doesnt change that

Both platforms can be upgraded to something faster in the future… once faster second hand chips are cheap
