The 14900 has already crushed Intel's reputation.

    • +1

      What happened?

      • +4

think hes talking about these processors being know to be unstable

      • Unstable as well as power hungry to perform at their best. Huge amount of wattage difference neeed for them to beat AMD with benchmarks and performance. If you don't mind paying much bigger for electricity costs this can beat AMDs 79 series but only in some categories. Difficult to call on the winner but I'd go for 7900x or 7950x instead

  • wow, I recently ordered the 7800X3D deal from below and paid extra to upgrade to the same P20C case in this deal and also 360mm cooler which comes out to be about the same price as this deal but only had a 750w PSU.
So this Intel deal seems like quite better value, especially considering the Intel cpu and motherboard both are much more expensive too. Sigh.

Still a beast of a PC, don't be upset!

    • +10

I wouldn't get FOMO over it - I'd genuinely rather have the 7800X3D.

    • +1

You are way better off with the 7800X3D, you at least have a gen or two worth of upgrade path coming, don't have to worry about power limit settings that may or may not be degrading Intel i9 CPUs and your PC will be less power hungry which can save you a bit of money over time.

At this point in time I wouldn't recommend anything above a 14700K to anyone. Even then for gaming I'd recommend the 7800X3D before the Intel's.

  • Any chance of a 7900x/7950x version of this coming before eofy with the 4080s? Not sure if I can commit to a desktop heater in the media room.

    • We can look at it but doesn't instinctively feel like a big mover SKU wise. Do you just want the extra cores over the 7800X3D version? Might be able to arrange a single CPU upgrade to one of those if so

  • +2

Any stores still doing prebuilts minus GPU? My partner needs to upgrade everything except already have a 3080 to use

  • The Userbenchmark comp never ceases to make me laugh:

The AMD 7000X3D CPUs have the same core architecture as the rest of the 7000 series but they have one group of eight "3D" cores with extra cache. The “3D” cores are priced higher but run at 10% lower clocks. For most real-world tasks performance is comparable to the 7000X variant. Cache sensitive scenarios such as low res. canned game benchmarks with an RTX 4090 ($2,000) benefit at the cost of everything else. Be wary of sponsored reviews with cherry picked games that showcase the wins, ignore frame drops and gloss over the losses. Also watch out for AMD’s army of Neanderthal social media accounts on reddit, forums and youtube, they will be singing their own praises as usual. AMD continue to develop “Advanced Marketing” relationships with select youtubers with the obvious aim of compensating for second tier products with first tier marketing. PC gamers considering a 7000X3D CPU need to work on their critical thinking skills: Influencers are paid handsomely to promote overpriced niche products (X3D, EPYC, Threadripper etc.). Rational gamers have little reason to look further than the $300 13600K which offers comparable real-world gaming and better desktop performance at a fraction of the price. Workstation users (and RTX 4080+ gamers) may find value in higher core CPUs such as the 16-core $400 13700K. Despite offering better performance at lower prices, as long as Intel continues to sample and sponsor marketers that are mostly funded by AMD, they will struggle to win market share. Sounds like something an Intel employee would say 😑

    • Lol well that's one point of view on things I guess 🤣

  • Having bought an earlier version of this deal… I would recommend staying away (not specific to techfast).

The i9-14900KF crashes so much/overheats and even with an obscene amount of bios tweaking/driver reinstallations etc it just isnt consistent. Sure when it works, it's good… but good god do I wish I bought something else particularly just for gaming.

    • I assume you have set the appropriate power limit settings according to Intels and Motherboard brands new 'base settings' ? Although you'll lose a tiny bit of performance you should be able to get it cooler and more stable. There's a good amount of videos on YT that can help get it stable (well in most cases 😐)

    • Hey @rchance,
I bought last month's i9-14900KF deal and got it a week ago.
When it arrived, UE5 games would not even load (the signature "out of video memory error" which translates to an intel issue).
MSI had a beta BIOS released early in May. I installed this, and it's been smooth sailing ever since. I have used the PC for work and play for a week now without issue.
Maybe you want to try this if you haven't already? I wouldn't say flashing the BIOS is an obscene amount of tweaking. Still, I don't think you should have to do this for a pre-build.

Putting the above aside, I'm very happy with the build, and props to techfast for putting together such good deals!

      • Thanks @vorsprung !

I updated the bios to v10 (the latest from May) but am still getting overheating/crashing on start up and it needs a couple of restarts before it stabelises. Maybe my chip has been damaged from the earlier pre patched usage? Not sure… I've contacted techfast about it.

The AMD versions seems rock solid by comparision. Sad.

        • Bugger, yeah I think I installed 7E06vAD1(Beta version) and there's been another beta version since then.
The only symptoms I had was one BSOD whilst installing drivers after installing Windows, then UE 5 games wouldn't load.
That's really unfortunate, I'm sorry to hear. Perhaps you just got super unlucky in the silicon lottery. I hope you get it sorted soon.
Yeah I steered a friend of mine towards the Ryzen deal. It came out days after I bought the intel deal and I was very tempted to try and switch over.

  • Alot of people, myself included, are interested in a build like this minus graphics card.

We've been told you're looking into it on multiple occasions but nothing arises.

If it's no bueno, can you perhaps let us know why it's not viable please?

For anyone curious about TechFast's quality (since there are lots of complaints about their speed at the very least). Here's my experience ordering this exact build.

I bought this deal in May (same deal different coupon), it took exactly 3 weeks for my PC to go from ordered to built. 13 business days for it to be built, and only 2 days to ship to me from out of state.

I'd seen some horror stories online about issues with pre-built, especially from discounted sellers on ozbargain. So I went into this with a lot of caution and did a full inspection of my order inside and out.

    The unboxing:
The boxes were plainly marked with just "Edge" on the outside as I requested for a swap to the leaper edge tank case. The pc was bagged and protected with foam spacers, it was also packed with air packets on the inside. There were zero dents scratches on the PC, the case felt sturdy and did not have any wobbly or weak panels.

    The front:
The front of the PC was very clean, cables were well managed, and there were no loose screws (however not all of the mobo screws were used, the bottom left one was missing on mine). They definitely made sure to plug in the 600w power connector in properly for the GPU, the plugs are also painted bright yellow on the inside to indicate poor insertions. The motherboard headers were all plugged in properly and were not held in place with hot glue or any similar cursed methods. They did not forget to remove the plastic on the M.2 drive heat sink, and the thermal paste on the CPU was well distributed.

    The back:
It was mostly a mess. You can see that they did a good job routing the main cables, but there were just jumbles of fan cables shoved into the back. They definitely could have done better, though I admit it is a common issue when you have 7 fans installed with no custom cables.

    Overall:
I was actually very pleasantly surprised by their build quality. I was truly expecting the PC to be dead on arrival and cause me a ton of issues, but it is at least well built. I am still setting it up as I type this, so I'll have to see how well it lasts in the long run.

TL;DR: I thought they'd be crap but it turned out to be pretty well built. No clue how well it'll perform yet.

My 4070tisuper just arrived today, and I have to say it really exceeded my expectations.

    • Mine arrives tomorrow, 15 business days from order to ship. Was hoping for neat cable management, but honestly it's not that important. I just hope the PC has no issues (such as 14900kf) and I can install windows & start gaming. It's been 7 years since I had a gaming PC, got some catching up to do.

I also have no idea how to care for an AIO watercooled system so that's got me nervous as well.

      • I have been using AIO for quite a few years now, as long as you have a semi decent one (i.e. pump doesn't fail prematurely and joints don't start randomly leaking) there is quite literally zero maintenance needed :)

Update #1: It's been about 12 hours of me tinkering around with the PC, and I must say… the original excitement has been toned down quite a bit…

While I can't say I didn't expect this, but HOLY HELL the 14900kf is a pain in the ass… Benchmark & stress testing it straight out of the box after setting up windows was miserable, package temp shoots from 35c to 100c within less than 1 second and immediately thermal throttles. The BIOS used on my MOBO was from Oct/2023, way out of date considering the current discourse around intel 13th & 14th gen mobo settings.

To improve its thermals, I installed a thermalright contact frame I bought ahead of time, and dug up some semi-decent thermal paste I had lying around from 7 years ago (the paste pre-applied by TechFast felt like playdough imo). This managed to bring the temp down by 15-20 degrees, depending on its mood, the CPU can hover at around 80c for a bit before heating up too much. I then updated the BIOS and tuned the OC to be near intel stock settings. This made the thermals a lot more managable, with less throttling, albeit the issue is not entirely resolved. I have been messing around with the OC tuning via intel XTU for hours on end, trying to find a power setting that is higher than the intel's baseline limit of 253W & 307A (not their "extreme" limit profile) and still avoids constant throttling in benchmarks.

At this point… I have more or less given up. I have tuned down the power limits for the CPU, carefully installed a contact frame, re-pasted the AIO head, and cranked up the pump and fan settings. There's nothing else I can really try to do but accept that at least the CPU will function just fine in none stress test scenarios. Currently, it is idling at 27c as I type this out which is good enough for me.

      • +1

sorry to hear that, seems Intel deserves to lose market share selling these defective CPU's.

      • +2

I chose the 7800x3d, and it turned out to be a great decision… The AG400 is enough to keep it cool.

After enabling EXPO, memory context restore, and power down in the BIOS, and setting the negative offset to 25, the boot time is now under 10 seconds, with the highest load temperature at 75 degrees. I'm really happy with it.

    • Thank you for the write-up and I'm sorry to hear that this is turning into what sounds like a nightmare.

I find it pretty dodgy that they couldn't even install the motherboard with all of it screws and that tells you they didn't just have a quick check over the system

      • Yeah and I found out recently that two of the standoffs were not even screwed in all the way, which resulted in the mobo getting bent on its right side… I have had to tear down the entire PC to fix them, and I rewired everything because while they did a terrific job at keeping the front clean, the cable management for the fan cables were a mess. The messy cables also made the front IO audio port un-usable due to noise, which went away entirely after I cleaned up the wiring and made sure to keep the front IO audio cable away from everything else.

I now have 11 fans in my system, up from their original 7. I installed the 3 AIO fans they kept in the spare parts box (they originally installed their own fans instead to keep the aesthetics consistent in the system), so now the AIO is a 6 fan push-pull. The 11th fan is installed on the bottom port of the case (leaper edge tank) just to draw more cold air in. This has done wonders for the thermals, idling at 20ish c and the system had avoid constant thermal throttling up to a power limit of 275W. That being said, even at 275W the CPU is still being power throttled and not reaching its "full potential". I have seen online that others are saying their i9 draws up to 340W or more to reach full turbo during stress tests. This CPU is simply nowhere near efficient…

@WolfRedeemed: It is very good. One of the fan vibrate a little bit but it is minor(and could be due to the transport). Obviously you can’t keep the Linux mint but I’m running it for the last 4hours to check cpu/gpu temperature and it is all good. Will benchmark it tonight and if all good I will install windows.
Also the gpu take all the space but I knew that.
The case is better looking than on the picture so that’s a good surprise
