For a moment, I thought the G54's price had gone up - lol

I've just got the G54 on my mind… JB sorely needs to discount it to $149 again

  • +3

No JB post is complete without you posting a Motorola deal . I can sleep now

    • +2

      goodnight.

  • +5

i know time machine yada yada, but isn't the pixel 8a for ~$349 with trade-in a much better choice?

EDIT: Oh wow 3.5mm and microSD. SOLD.

    • +6

Different though - gift cards =/= cash.

I rarely shop at JB, what good is a gift card for me?

    • The demo I saw in store also had FM Radio.

    • +1

      What time machine?

      • Was a JB perks offers while back. 20watt model

  • +1

Can anyone that has this shed any light on the quality of the camera?

    • +2

OK for outdoor daytime use. Indoor is kinda dark, grainy and fuzzy. I also had issues scanning some QR codes (where Pixel 7a has no issues)

      • Cheers, I might hold out for a special on the new Moto's that have just come out

        • Samasung A55 is a good alternative, long software support, nice camera and screen. Amaysim $429 is a good deal.

          • +1

@bobokingdom: Nope not touching another Samcrump again.
The wife has the Samsung A73 and it's disappointing in every aspect. Camera is lagging from new, software is slow and overall it looks like a $350 phone

            • +2

@DannyBoy: If you care about Camera, don't waste time with Motorola.

              • @bobokingdom: I was eyeing the Edge 50 Pro but not prepared to spend that much on a Motorola.
                Maybe it's back to Xiaomi

              • @bobokingdom: So A55 is something you recommend? I'm looking to have a new phone in mid-low end range and I do care about camera. I'm not really into Samsung. What Motorola model has a decent camera?

                • +1

@AshleyLiang: I think most people will agree Moto has terrible camera, even for the top tier phones :(

            • @DannyBoy: have you tried giving A73ba factory reset?
due to accumulating software/apps updates overtime, it gets a little messy which many ppl don't realise

              • @sntc: It was almost like this out of the box. It's an option but honestly we shouldn't even bothered with it, all our Samsungs in the past haven't lasted longer than 2-3yrs and basically became useless at end of life.
The wife and I have both had Xiaomis of different generations and they have been great

            • @DannyBoy: Partner's been using a Samsung A52 for almost 3 years now, very happy with it. Pretty good photos, including night shots, nice screen, battery is decent (even when playing chess online :) )

  • +3

Think that RRP is long gone, ~$350 seems to be the norm and hopefully $299 soon like Bing Lee's clearance price, possibly because the G85 refresh is around the corner

    • +2

Pity, it looks to have a curved screen.

    • Should have better battery life thanks to the new chip set

  • G54 is less than half the discounted price of this

    • +2

      Link?

    • please share the deal, I missed out on the prior JB offer

  • Would buy one if it supports esim.

    • +5
      • Nice! Thank you for that, never don't this exist.

        • +3

Just a heads up - my son just tried using it in the US (for free plans) and it didn't work because those services all need apps, and the apps all go directly to the Google eSIM settings, but this adapter has it's own eSIM settings.

          • @McFly: Thanks for the heads up. Seems the built-in eSIM would be safer to use.

            • @audreamer: It would be fine for Australian services, and it worked with Airalo.

              • +1

@McFly: The main reason I use eSIM is for oversea traveling, so I will wait for a decent deal for a flagship phone with eSIM.

It's interesting how this phone is 2-3 years newer than my Oppo Reno4 but only marginally better spec'ed in terms of chipset with more RAM and storage. However, I only paid $245 at the time from JB Hifi in Jan 2022.

  • Might be worth knowing that doesn't cast video over cable.
With many people buying portable monitors I thought I could watch movies stream to it from this, but it would need a casting dongle

    • Very very few phones can do that, mostly just high end ones with proprietary solutions.

Micro HDMI was semi common on the very first android phones but that was a decade ago.

  • Downgrade much from Galaxy S21?

    • Following.

I have an Ultra I'm thinking of replacing.

      • I'd keep the ultra

        • I barely use my phone nowadays but I have had the Ultra for the last like 5 - 6 years.. 😅

    • I got this to replace my s21 Fe just for dual sim,not an upgrade pretty much on par. The chopping action for fast flashlight is handy though. Also as above my s21 could stream over cable but this can't. I used to do it to play movies on a friends TV or portable monitor

Also mic clips at concerts, and Facebook messenger notifications are spontaneous and doesn't update messages till I open the app

      • Facebook messenger notifications are spontaneous and doesn't update messages till I open the app

Would that not just be a battery saving option putting the app to sleep or not allowing it to run in the background? Have you tried the other power options for the app?

    • +1

Wouldnt the camera in S20 and above be much better?

  • This is tremendous value even at RRP. I bought one as a stop gap while I had my $1000+ (but older) Oppo Find X3 Neo repaired, and I couldn't find an obvious reason to go back to the Oppo.

You can always buy this, and flip it immediately and trade for the Pixel 8A with JBs $200 gift card and $380 trade in credit (less the $320 paid in this deal nets you $260). Personally though the only advantage of the 8A is slightly smaller size (if you like compact) and many years of Android updates. The moto g84 has an advantage over the 8A by including screen protector and phone case in the box, and dual sim (option to use micro SD instead of sim).

    • +1

that deal has finished now though.

    • fairly sure the $200 gift card has finished, it was only for the first week or so.

    • My bad, I thought it was running to end of month.

  • +2

Trying to convince my 15yo son that this is a better option than an refurb iPhone 12 - any suggestions on how best to suggest it?

    • +4
      • new vs old 4 year old phone
      • terrible battery life vs 2 day battery life and faster charging
      • big screen with double the refresh rate (120Hz)
      • 256gb of storage
      • +4

Thanks - for me it's a no brainer - get this phone - it's the old peer group brainwashing saga

Iphones are good but not worth the spend imo - alternatively I reckon iPads are well the spend and use mine all the time still on Gen 5 LOL

    • +2

is son currently on iphone or android?

    • +1

is it coming from peer pressure?

      • +5

Probably either already used to iPhone or all his friends use one.

    • Who's paying for it, you or him?

    • +7

Ask him why he has his heart set on the iPhone, acknowledge it, and explain why you think this is better. If he still wants the iPhone, get it for him. As a former child, I believe children should be allowed to make their own choices when it comes to subjective things like this.

  • Does the g84 have any problems with the audio/volume being too low when connected with earphones?

    • +2

Not that I can tell but I don't listen to stuff at crazy high volume like some people seem to do. Can't imagine how bad it would be for their hearing.
I do however run in to bluetooth cutting out issue quite frequently and have to disable bluetooth and reconnect to fix it. It's quite annoying.

    • Are you referring to wired or Bluetooth?

For Bluetooth, Android allows selection of mobile and earphone volume separately (loudest option) or synchronised (I find this a problem if the levels of source audio are low and I'm in a boat environment). Once you select synchronised it is hard to convince Android to go back.

  • +1

    Brilliant! Got one.

  • Considering replacing my existing Poco f3 with this. Is this a worthwhile upgrade?

    • +3

F3 is a more powerful phone. Unless it won't work with VoLTE, keep it.

      • I have Poco F3 with Volte enabled, but keep getting warning messages from Optus that my phone is not compatible with 3g disconnect

  • What is the software support like?
number of Android OS updates? Security updates supported until 202X?

Tossing up this between Samsung A15 5g

New to Motorola phones. Any ideas folks?

    • Security until September 2026. If updates are important to you, the 4 os and 5 year security of the a15 is much better.

Use this if you have an old 3g phone
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/845852

      • So about 2 years 3 months security remaining for the g84. Need to use banking apps & security important various apps on my new phone.

Great that Samsung provides guaranteed 4yr OS & 5yr security updates on all their A series phones.

Samsung Galaxy A15 5g is all I need in a basic smartphone.

For rrp$349 or sale price of $327 it's not too bad price wise.

Hope 4GB ram won't bottle neck the phone years later.

        • wait for EOFY sales if you can. $327 is a frequently available price. If you can spend a bit more, get the A55 for $399, RRP$699. It has 8GB of RAM and is powerful enough to last 4-5yrs https://www.amaysim.com.au/devices/phones/samsung/samsung-ga…

          all their A series phones.

          not the a05s

        • That's exactly the catch. I'd question the longevity of a phone with updates if the updates will (most probably) require more grunt/ram. 4GB is paltry these days, especially on a Samsung.

I'd go the G84 because of the way things are heading with AI (whether you like it or not), apps and the OS are going to need more ram.

That said, I do reckon the G84 getting 12GB ram was more of Motorola going "holy-shit, we bought how many uMCP chips during covid?" than planning for the future or anything.
