This seems like a great deal. Don't think I've ever seen a phone where you can get 60% off with gift cards upon release?

    MKBHD review if interested: https://youtu.be/B3szaVzQx0o?si=l8LAR4TJ8a8OazGB

    • +8

Not sure how great it really is, considering the 8 was $799 just a few days ago!

      • +6

The difference is even though the pixel 8 was $799, it didn't have the trade in bonus which this pixel 8a deal does. So before any proper review comes out (the MKHBD review is more of a pre-review) and you reckon the pixel 8a will perform well enough, this is a very good deal with the trade in bonus and added gift card.

      • +6

Not sure how great it really is, considering the 8 was $799 just a few days ago!

The 8a is very similar spec to the 8 and with these offers it's less than half the price.

      • +3

The deep discount on the P8 should start in January if you can hodl long enough. Going by past history will hit 499. Til then there will be multiple trade in offers.
edit… also going by history, we are a due a clickfrenzy campaign/coupon in about a week which could make this deal even better!!

        • p8 pro 999 from telstra, rrp1799

meanwhile you can tie strings to hollow sardine cans to talk while waiting for the 8 deals after christmas

      • so $350 vs $800?

    • is this better than oppo reno 11 with free earpod?

Oppo OS is the biggest pain in the universe if you're used to stock-ish Android

        • +1

ColorOS is great IMHO, with your reasoning Samsung's One UI is biggest pain in the galaxy

    • +6

      $849-200-300 = $349?

      • +4

You can't use the GC to buy the phone, since you only get it after the purchase

        • how long the expiry date?

          • +3

@jjj123: $200 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card does not expire, as is the case for all normal JB Hi-Fi Gift Cards.

            • +1

@FOX: make the deal even better as long as jb is not de-listed from asx

      • If you trade in a pixel 7, does that number go even lower?

        • If your p7 is reasonably good cosmetic condition and working, you get $300 for it, plus the $300 and $200 gift card.

So $800 in total. I don't know if you can use the gc towards purchase though. Still it would $600 off without then use the gc afterwards for whatever.

          • +1

@fishnchipsncoke: You can sell pixel 7 for more than $300 on marketplace instead.

            • @BinnyC: But you get a bonus $300 with trade in. So your get $600 for p7.

Your not getting that on marketplace.

              • @fishnchipsncoke: If I trade in the phone but do not send it, I still get $300 bonus and say sell it on marketplace for more than $300?

      • +1

don't forget these are not actually savings in your pocket where you can put in the bank, it is pseudo savings as you have to spend it to realise the benefit, and you have to spend it in their store, at least the $200 cannot be put back into your savings account. Also not many people have sony ericsson Android 4.0 10 dollar phones. Most people nowadays do have pretty good phones acquired recently, so trading in may not be an option, but grandfathers of your grandfathers may find great value trading in.

        • +1

Which ones can you trade in? Because people could buy a cheap phone from gumtree and trade it in?

    • is the phone made in

      • Korean
      • Indian
      • Vietnam
      • China

by who? LG or Google itself?

      • +1

Bangladesh by the same folks who made your Zara shirt.

  • +3

Pixel 7 gets $300 + $300 trade in, and you get $200 gift card.

Is it worth it or a trap?

    • Did not see that on the JB site, is there a link pls?

      • +3

All of the trading in old devices is done via JB Squaretradeup
        https://jbhifi.squaretradeup.com.au/

      • +4

I think they mean that the trade in value for a pixel 7 is $300 which then combined with the $300 bonus trade in and $200 gift card means that effectively the phone only costs $50 - in reality, you'd be paying $250 for the Pixel 8a but you would also get a $200 gift card to use in the future.

        • +2

Worth it for the small generation bump from 7 to 8a IMO.

          • +7

@slankets: don't forget that you do lose your old phone as well, so it's not straight up $300+300. It's $300+300-whatever you think your phone is actually worth, which probably still makes this a good deal if you don't care about giving up your old phone.

    • +6

I'm in the same boat. Probably worth it for the G3 chip and "7 years of updates"

      • +1

While 7 years of updates is good on paper, how many here have kept a phone for that long ? Besides you are already looking to upgrade a 1 year old phone, what makes you think you'll keep the 8a for any longer ??

    • it's a trapezium

    • +1

What's the trap? If you want the 8a and are happy with $600 for a pixel 7 then do it.

$200 gc is gonna be useful at some point.

    • +1

IMHO 7 to 8a is not necessarily an upgrade, more like a sidegrade may even be a slight downgrade for some. Because 8a has a slightly worse DXO mark for overall camera performance, it has a slightly smaller screen and screen to body ratio, slower wired and wireless charging (20/20 vs 18/7.5) and a slightly lower IP rating (68 vs 67), in return you get a newer CPU, slightly brighter screen and a promise of 7 year software updates (which for most is meaningless, for example here you are looking to upgrade after a year).

  • +3

Green colour not available in AU.

Wonder if they'll do the 8 Pro trick and release it a couple months later.

    • Possibly.

  • Just to clarify, if my trade-in value is$400, jb will give another $300 on top + $200 gift card is it? Thanks.

    • +4

      Yes

  • +1

Just got the Harvey Norman’s newsletter

$0 on the Google Pixel 8a on Optus $69/month for 24 months + $300 bonus Harvey Norman gift card

    • What is the termination fee? Cancel in the first month?

      • Yup cancel asap, don’t need to wait until a month’s over
ETC is 12 months worth, so $828

        • do you have to pay also for the first month, so it's actually 13 months worth?

          • @coldazure: YMMW but on a separate telco, Telstra managed to waive the first month for me. I just cbf asking Optus to do it as wanted the process to be seamless

  • I can't see the trade in bonus listed anywhere

    • +2

      I can see it

Did you open a product on OP’s link and scroll down until the “Don’t miss out on these” section?

      • +1

        Thanks! :)

  • +1

    Minimum cancellation fee $828.

    • +2

      HN learned from the past.

      • Bet they're still reeling from the Pixel 8 pro + pixel watch 2 deal on release :)

        $1000 contract cancellation fee, bargain!

      • strange officeworks is not throwing even a free pencil case.

  • +3

Great deal. Better than when I got the 7a earlier this year.

  • Glad I didnt wait for this. ridiculous price for a mid-tier phone

    • +2

It's good if you can take advantage of the trade-in bonus, but otherwise yeah best off just waiting for a straight discount later on.

    • +5

If you have a $1 phone you only have to pay $549 and then free $200 GC, not sure what is so ridiculous about it, regardless the price increase and better phone overall than the previous one.

      • When I try to put my phone, it doesn't allow me as the value is o.

      • I'm talking about the RRP of $849

        • Not really, seen what all the flagships costs now?

        • +1

I'm talking about the RRP of $849

RRP and price you pay are almost always different. Don't get caught up in the sales trickery.

      • +2

sorry i'm dumb. what do you mean by a $1 phone?

did you mean you can trade in any phone, like even a potato Nokia 3310, and get the full $300 off for trading "something" in?

        • +2

It has to be a recent model phone. Really old or really cheap phones will be valued at $0 and won't be accepted for trade in.

          • +2

@capslock: i see. thanks for the clarification.

so in essence it's not really so much a deal on the Pixel 8a, but a $300+ deal on your old phone that might not be worth that much.

            • +1

@coldazure: its deal $349 for a google p8a, can you get a similair specs phone at this price with googles 7 years security updates?

'And Pixel 8a will receive seven years of software support, including security updates and Android OS upgrades. Plus you'll benefit from all the new features and improvements in ongoing Feature Drops.'

              • @jjj123: not sure how the features of the product is relevant to the deal.

        • +3

You have to trade in a phone that has a min $1 trade in value (e.g. Pixel 5) to get the bonus $300 voucher.

Also, you can trade in a phone without providing the IMEI info, meaning, you can literally pretend you have this 'Pixel 5' phone in perfect working condition and JB will send you the bonus voucher. You will of course be asked to send the phone in or you will lose the $1 security deposit for your pretend Pixel 5 phone. You probably know what to do next…..

So, $300 voucher + $200 GC is a pretty good deal I think!

          • +2

@LuvXIX: So basically just ignore the request to send the phone in? Any chance they reversed the $300 if you don't send the phone in after some time? Sorry if this is obvious, never done this before.

            • @ramenblizz: Can't comment on this. This is my first time using JB trade in program. Have done this with Samsung/Asurion, and basically, my CC got charged amounting to the trade in value when I decided to keep the old phone.

But SQUARETRADE Terms and condition says you will be charged for the amount of the 'trade in value' in e-gift card form if you don't send your phone in, which in my example, is $1.

The $300 GC is a 'bonus' GC not mentioned on their Terms and Condition.

          • @LuvXIX: according to other people's experiences in the past, there's no blacklisting or banning if you do this as well so it's definitely an enticing deal.

      • +1

It's bizarre how people think these deals are bad. Or like a trick. Meanwhile buying all sorts of shit from JB through the year and say saying the gift card isn't money in your pocket, yet they will spend $250 at JB at some point.

    • +4

ridiculous price for a mid-tier phone

With this offer it works out to about $250. Show me any phone anywhere that comes close to that kind of deal

    • its deal $349 for a google p8a, can you get a similair specs phone at this price with googles 7 years security updates?

'And Pixel 8a will receive seven years of software support, including security updates and Android OS upgrades. Plus you'll benefit from all the new features and improvements in ongoing Feature Drops.'

  • +5

What's JB's trade in program like? Does it operate the same as Samsung's where you can trade in something then not send it back and pay a minimum penalty?

    • -1

they learned now they take the money off your valid credit card first, so in order to get the benefit you must first prove you already got the equivalent of the benefit you intend to get they must have got burned in the past handing out vouchers and then no phones got sent in.

  • -1
    • Thanks for the link. I think I'll pass on 8a

      • Yeh…
Seems like 3rd gen cheap phones are a pass
        Eg iPhone se3

      • you are passing because he recommends the 8 over 8a, because the price is 550 usd vs 500 usd for 8a, this is 350aud which is 235usd, if the price was 235 usd in the review which is kind crazy that its less than half the price in australia compared to 500 usd in usa. in the review i guarantee you he would name it phone of the year for 235 usd. im not a android fan boy nor a big fan, i have iphone but i know a good deal when i see one

    • +4

500usd price point is different to 550aud price point not including 200 store voucher.

  • Do JB take trade-ins for Xiaomi Redmi phones or only what is shown on the website?

    • Only what's shown on the JB SquareTrade page I'm pretty sure

    • +1

no only the brands majority of people care to carry. The Red Shark Mimees and blackdeath all not valid phones, they're just metal pieces. They won't even take Nothing despite selling Nothing

  • Worthy upgrade from Poco X3 Pro or Onplus 6?

    • It'll be better camera than x3 pro.

Recently went cherry blossom viewing with the wife who has a S24 ultra…and the x3 pro is REALLY showing it's lack of good camera, so it's time for a Pixel upgrade I reckon.

      • you do need good optics to catch those sherry blossom in the wine glass.

  • +6

Tempted though seems to be some false savings here as they have really jacked the price of the 8a release. seems excessive for a midrange phone.

  • +1

lmao I can get $10 for my 512gb note 9 - the screen doesn't work so that's aight.

  • Hmm.. have a S22 Ultra with broken screen, which I can trade in for $86. Wonder whether it's worth taking up this deal.

  • +3

So could someone that has used the JB trade in program explain a little as their site is not very clear. To get the $300 bonus + trade in credit do I need to hand over my old phone BEFORE I get the new one? or can I get the credit and bonus issued prior to handing it over. As it is a preorder would suck to have to give up the phone first.

    • +5

Just choose a $1 phone like the pixel 5 then don't send it in. The code is emailed before you send anything, previous threads made it clear you still get the voucher etc

      • +1

Does square charge a fee for not sending the device in? I thought they caught on to people not sending them in.

        • +1

You'd just be liable for the cost of the gift card. Last time I went for the bonus trade in for the Pixel 8 Pro, I did the trade-in process, then bought the Pixel 8 Pro with the gift card as well as the bonus coupon and after that I sent an email to JB's Square trade up asking to cancel in the trade in. Just had to pay the cost of the gift card that I had used (nothing else).

      • +1

has anybody done this before and can confirm whether doing this gets you blacklisted from future deals that require ID?

        • +2
          • @capslock: wow thanks for digging that up, awesome effort!

hmmm, so does that mean… it's safe to do this :X

            i'm seriously enticed.
