I was just reading this article about Recall. Wow I’m steering clear of this. Privacy train wreck. I guess i just need to not buy any hardware with the Snapdragon X.

Who is asking for all this AI Crap? There should be a way to turn it all off!
I'm sure there's ways to disable it. I'm staying away because I don't think it's worth twice the price of the Xiaoxin I've been eyeing. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006803805204.html
That laptop looks so good it looks fake compared to the Australian lenovo store, :)
I am in no rush, I wait for the newer chips to land, they reportedly have more gpu units/cores.
WiFi , 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, AU$2,999.00 incl. GST
KEKW
Don't worry, the next model which is exactly the same but with 32gb of ram is only $600 more
Everyone really taking hints from Apples price laddering ideology.
Except now they also pulling up the ladder behind them.
i can see the locally run AI being useful to protect company data, but how 'local' is it?
Test would be if you're disconnected from the internet. None of the gpt models/functions would run locally however.
From the article:
Copilot+ PCs are an offshoot of AI PCs, which are generally defined as PCs running on Intel (INTC), AMD (AMD), and Qualcomm (QCOM) chips with built-in neural processing units, or neural engines, that can run generative AI applications locally without needing to connect to the internet.
We'll see about that
@belongsinforums: Simplistically it's just an asic for matrix operations (with a lot of accoutrements). It's definitely capable of running small models efficiently. Small models and non-llm workloads. It's never going to run the large stuff you hear about gpt etc.
It'll be used for task specific workloads, like fancy object detection, video frame interpolation, noise cancellation, "generative fill", etc. Some task specific nano-llms will maybe work too.
@incipient: or even just local spell check
The better test would be to try and get it to do really illegal things and see if any 3 letter acronym people show up.
It might work off-line but still report back everything you did the next time you connect after all, which would be a problem for secure company/customer data either way.
@Lief: I couldn't even get Copilot to move full-stops in a text string in Excel just now without it resorting to VBA.
Like I know how to write the regular formula, I just wanted it done quicker.
Useless.
Comparing the New Surface Pro to SP9, seems this new version has a decrease in battery life, no thunderbolt ports and is heavier.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/surface/devices/compare-devi…
"14 hours video playback" vs "15.5 hours" - SP9 includes idle time during test
[New] Surface Pro:
Local video playback: Based on local video playback test. Testing conducted by Microsoft in April 2024 using pre-production software and pre-production Surface Pro Snapdragon® X Plus C10 256 GB and 512 GB, 16 GB RAM (LCD) devices and Surface Pro Snapdragon® X Elite C12 1 TB 32 GB RAM (OLED) devices. Testing consisted of full battery discharge during video playback of a .mov file through the Windows Media Player application in 1080p at 24 FPS. All settings were default except screen brightness set to 150 nits with Auto-brightness disabled. WiFi was connected to a network. Tested with Windows 11. Battery life varies significantly with settings, usage and other factors.
Surface Pro 9:
Up to 15.5 hours of battery life based on typical Surface device usage. Testing conducted by Microsoft in August 2022 using preproduction software and preproduction Intel®12th Gen Core™ i5, 256GB, 8GB RAM device. Testing consisted of full battery discharge with a mixture of active use and modern standby. The active use portion consists of (1) a web browsing test accessing eight popular websites over multiple open tabs, (2) a productivity test utilising Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote and Outlook, and (3) a portion of time with the device in use with idle applications. All settings were default except screen brightness was set to 150 nits with Auto-Brightness and Adaptive Colour disabled. WiFi was connected to a network. Tested with Windows Version 11.0.22621 (21H2). Battery life varies significantly with settings, usage and other factors.
Edit: Found in footnotes [2] - also 8GB vs 32GB RAM (and just i5) so you'd have less battery with an upspec'd SP9
Wow thank you for digging around the fine print and adding it here. Very informative and useful.
Funny how microsoft do their product. We were begging to add thunderbolt to surface pro for years, and they only do it for 2 devices.
Thunderbolt is an Intel licensed standard, so a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC product will not have the label (unless they pay licensing). The new Surfaces have USB4, which are at least half compliant with Thunderbolt at the minimum (7.5W and 20Gbps vs 15W and 40Gbps), so it's a question of whether Microsoft cheaped out or not (unlikely given competitors like Lenovo and Samsung have 40Gbps PD3.1 DP1.4 on their models).
Do you still need to remove the glued-on screen to access the internals on the Pro?
Yeah love how "sustainable" they are but will be super unfriendly or impossible to repair or replace parts
…
Designed with sustainability in mind
With more recycled materials, thoughtful packaging and increased built-in efficiency, we design Surface products with the circular economy in mind. Surface Pro is another step toward Microsoft’s goal to be carbon negative, water positive, and achieve zero waste by 2030.
To be fair, this isn't exclusive to Microsoft, as most laptops/tablets are becoming more difficult to repair. You have to sacrifice repairability if you want all over perks of a modern device.
The circular economy is you taking the device back to them for a $50 discount when you upgrade every year so they can refurb it and make another couple hundred by selling it again.
What’s the easiest way to get a student email? I see lots of education deals. Are there free courses or something you can sign up to?
get preggers
Will normal x86 applications run on Snapdragon X processors?
Yes, via emulation (Prism). Apple did something similar with their M1 when launched (Rosetta)
DOA at these prices. They aren't Apple despite how badly they want to be.
Remember these are student pricing, regular pricing may surpass Apple's
Definitely not Apple because to achieve the same productivity you need a MacBook AND and iPad.
Add the cost of those 2 up and see how close things are.
But don't give me some BS about just adding a keyboard and using the iPad on its own. That's only fine if you are of the age to have a carer or guardian.
Sorry about someone giving you BS like that, must have been quite an experience.
Anyway, surface Laptop is as expensive as a MBP and defs not the same quality or stability. Yes, it has a touchscreen; if having a touchscreen is crucial in your life, then MBP won't be satisfying to you. All depends, right.
So we just gonna skip the Pro 10?
Maybe they did a search and saw the surface pro x and assumed they already did 10.
Or maybe the number 10 has traumatised Microsoft because they keep looking at the growing windows 10 and shrinking windows 11 numbers
Technically this is just the “Surface Pro - 11th Generation” instead of “Surface Pro 11”
I did a search and there is apparently a Pro 10 Business edition. Maybe that's why. And the same goes for the Laptop.
@Gronkmaster69: Microsoft and naming things don't have the best track record haha

Lenovo's offering comes with 32GB RAM + 1TB SSD + 14.5" 3K OLED for $2799 and promises 21.5 hours video playback, keyboard included

Given the good year round sales I wouldn't be surprised if this price drops in a few months
Yep 100% this will go on "sale", should be well under $2000 by September. Hopefully there will be a 16in version this year. I'd be keen to try one.
wtf just get a macbook at that price
M3 Air (which this SoC competes with) is $2399 for 16GB + 512GB off-sale, which is a tossup if you need the extra RAM and storage. Plus the added features like OLED, 90hz, claimed battery life are just nice to have. Lenovo's sales are just too good when they slash the RRP by 30-60%, so in my opinion it's a wait before buying.
Macbook 8GB ? haha
Wow, the Surface Pro Flex Keyboard with Slim Pen is priced at $769.95.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/d/surface-pro-flex-keyboard-…
The ipad magic keyboard looks cheap now haha
Wow, isn't that a steal!
what does the 'Copilot' mean in the product title?
will include a lifetime free Copilot Pro subscription?
pro 9 , 10 , 11 stupidly heavy , i rather get a 2nd hand pro 7 or a ipad ~ or keep using my surface go …
Anyone know if the SP8 / 9 keyboards work with these? I'm pretty sure I don't need a copilot key;-)
Yes, if i'm not wrong.
BTW JBHIFI now offering 200gift card for the new surface pro preorders.
do you know if they pricematch microsoft edu?
Flex keyboards are sold out
How much on education store?
Looking to pick up a SP for my parents essentially for emails, web browsing, MS Office software. Don't know anything about them but trying to understand why the SP9 is way more expensive than the latest version? Is this just JB price jacking?
https://www.jbhifi.com.au/pages/compare?sku=592797&sku=74785
To me it just seems like for $11 more I should just get the latest version and hopefully a couple extra years out of it. Am I missing something here?
Thanks for the help in advance
LTT writers are going to love that co-pilot + branding
