  • What’s the benefits of using these? I’m pretty clueless when it comes to tech like this

I have just a normal router and nbn box. Wondering if it’s worth upgrading to these?

    • +1

If you need to ask then chances are you won't need one. Its for large houses with lots of devices that talk to each other over wifi or you have a in house media server you want to stream movies to lots of devices. A good router + maybe a wifi repeater if you have dead spots is enough for most households.

      • +1

Legend thanks heaps for you help 🙌🏽

      • +9

I'd argue a mesh system is much better than a wifi repeater. And I'd also argue a lot of people that don't understand what it does could definitely make great use of it

      • A good router + maybe a wifi repeater if you have dead spots is enough for most households.

I had a TP-Link VR2800 which was struggling to support my Wi-Fi needs, it was reaching out to the shed so i added an RE205 extender which solved the shed problem but I still had a problem of which i didn't realise was caused by the router.
When i tried to play music everywhere through my echo devices it would only play through some.

About this time last year I picked up a TP-Link AX90 router for $268 which fixed my Echo problem as well as offering a mesh system

        • +1

          Pros
          +Ease of setup
+One wifi network when you move around in the house
          +Common interface to handle everything

          Cons
          -Bit expensive

It allows you to have the same wifi capability, including signal strength, around the house without having to switch wifi networks (amongst many other features).

For example, you may have your NBN router in one room but poor to no Internet signal in another. Plug one of these into the router and the others around the home and in many cases unless you have the same wifi hotspot signal strength throughout (unless you have strong interference i.e. other electrical devices, faraday like walls or very long distances).

In the case of a family relative, their NBN box is in the theatre room and the wifi signal could only travel so far as the next room kitchen. Now they can get a signal from their outside shed as well as their home office three rooms down the hall. Their iPhone, iPad, TV Internet applications all load faster as well.

Many are relatively easy to setup. For example, the one I use is simply plug in via Ethernet cable to the back of the NBN box, download and open an app on an iPhone and confirm the original wifi network name, then plug in the rest around the house and it's done.

Wish we had bunnings NZ price beat policy.

    • Just went to bunnings and they refused.
She was awkward, plus refused on the basis of it not being free shipping 😕. Is that so?

      • try online chat for price match as others have done in the comments, or try a different store

        • Tried. It says awaiting stock on digidirect, hence that refused too

          • +1

@dealmaker: FYI is back in stock on Digi for $272, could give Bunnings a whirl if you wanted….

            • @Zuelly: nice, cheaper too
you could post this as a new deal

    • Just called ahead and they literally gonna give it to me for $269.10, they just put one on hold for me, they not even add the shipping price. Damn that’s a good price. The key is be super friendly and they help you out.

      • Which store?

        • Bunnings Virginia, In QLD

  • Tech illiterate here.. What advantage would this have over my M5 mesh?

    • +2

Faster wifi speeds locally. This may not necessarily feel like an upgrade though, it depends what you do on your local network, and since you are a self proclaimed tech illiterate, i'd say it wouldn't do a lot for you.

      • thanks I'll stick with my M5.. as long as it's fast enough to let me browse ozbargain and ensure my CR tracks I'm happy

        • +1

I'm not tech illiterate and run the m5 mesh myself. I do a fair bit locally, smart devices and transferring large files from device to device. The M5 mesh handles it well enough for my needs, so I'm keeping my $299 + delivery.

      • Not just locally, the M5 too slow to handle 1000/50 for example.

        • Is the x50 decent for a 1000/50 plan with say 30 devices connected?

        • Ahh, fair enough. I'm not paying for thus not pulling that speed.

    • +1

For me the step to wifi 6 meant I could stream a Bluray rip to a Firestick 4k max (also wifi 6) in my projector without stutters.

      Just a bit more throughput.

  • I have a similar question. I feel my Ubiquiti Dream Machine is getting long in the tooth and their software isn’t as good as it was when it was the rage.

I do struggle with wifi signal in the house.

Do these offer much options for customising? Traffic monitoring etc?

  • Can get 10% beat from bunnings

  • This one or deco M5 ?

  • +1

For the tech illiterate, you get a cool wifi6 connection symbol on your Android phone. I got so used to it when I was in Europe for holiday, everywhere seems to have wifi6 there. So it was weird when I came home to my WiFi 5 connection at home…

  • Saw a Deco X50 Pro, but why is the "Pro" edition only has 2 LAN ports? anyone knows the difference?

    • +1

The X50 Pro has 2x 2.5gb ports, this would only really be usefull for transfering data locally between 2 PC's via ethernet since our internet maxes at 1000/50

      • +1

Yeah for now the max is 1000/400 for nbn FTTP. nbn are proposing 2000/200 for FTTP and 2000/100 for HFC.

          https://www.nbnco.com.au/corporate-information/media-centre/…

Wow first time hearing about 2gig, only saw the 1000/100 news.

          Edit:

As an essential requirement to enable multi-gigabit speeds, a new, slimline, single-port NTD, which has the technical capability to accommodate future speeds up to 2.5 Gbps, is proposed to be made available for residential use, and a new, four-port model, which has the technical capability to accommodate future speeds up to 10 Gbps, is proposed for businesses.

This is dissapointing, you would think they would go straight to 10g for all so that in the future a second replacement wouldnt be needed.

          • @Axelstrife:

This is dissapointing, you would think they would go straight to 10g

Approximately zero consumer gear supports 10Gb - this would be a pointless move.
At least with 2.5Gb, there are various PCs, NAS, and WiFi Access Points that have 2.5Gb Ethernet onboard.

            • @Nom: Yet.

so that in the future a second replacement wouldnt be needed.

  • I’m new to this stuff.

I’m satisfied with the wifi connection in my house, but it gets patchy in my shed about 25 - 30 m away from my router.

Would this be a good solution or overkill?

What’s the least I could spend to get a solid connection in one spot where I am currently patchy?

    • +2

well, the least you could spend would be running a Cat 6 cable from your house out to your shed and attaching a wifi hot spot to it https://cctvmasters.com.au/products/ac-cat6-im-30m

If your shed has electricity then you could use a ethernet over power connection https://www.amazon.com.au/TP-Link-TL-WPA4220KIT-300Mbit-Ethe… . These sometimes work well and sometimes not well, it all depends on wiring and circuit set up etc and you wont know until you plug it in

You can try a mesh system. However 25m is going to be a bit iffy; they recommend 15m max for 'best' outcome (ie distance between each mesh unit); I dont know how well they work at 25m. You will also need power in the shed to run the mesh system. This particular mesh (M6) is likely overkill unless you are streaming HD videos to the shed, if you just want wifi on the phone then get a cheaper ('slower') option, like the M5.

Or you can buy a long distance router/modem. These are usually pretty expensive but there are cheaper options that might suit eg Reyee RG-E5

  • +1

I picked these up recently for $350.

My 2nd mesh, upgraded from original Orbi setup.

Really impressed with ease of setup and app based control. Highly recommended.

    • A noob question: Can I replace my router with this & does this allow you to configure VPN?

  • Do these do Ethernet back haul if you connect them all together via Ethernet instead of wifi? I can't find that info in the manual.

    • Yeah you can. There is three Gigabit ethernet ports per Deco X50. On the TP-Link overview page it says;

Wireless connections and optional Ethernet backhaul work together to link Deco units, providing even faster network speeds and truly seamless coverage.

    • It works well

  • questions for all experts out there with a thanks in advance :)
    1. Can you use separate network with these routers similar to VLANs, to isolate IoTs/CCT cameras?
    2. What would be the experience with Parent controls with these units?

I'm trying to find a product that is capable of doing VLANs plus has some functions built in to manage/parental control

    • +1

Yes to seperate network for IoT, can limit to only 2.4GHz and tell the system which node to prioritise connection to, has seperate IP table, I don't have much experiences with VLAN sorry.

Parental controls seem useful, however I haven't used as my kids are all locked down at device level.

      • Thanks dotpom.

    • +1

If you want VLANs look at Asus, Ubiquiti and Synology.

      Asus VLAN supported models:

      GT-AX11000 Pro, GT-AX6000, GT-AXE16000, RT-AX86U Pro, RT-AX88U Pro
ZenWiFi Pro ET12, ZenWIFI Pro XT12 (only provide beta firmware)

Asus web and app filters demo
      Asus time scheduler demo

      • +1

Thanks Twix. I knew about Ubiquiti, seems bit expensive and bit more involved as well. But never knew about Asus doing VLANs. I'll have a look at those links.

        • Yeah Asus never used to but now they do on those selected routers.

Just do the price match through the Bunnings online chat.

They'll give you an order number to complete the purchase over the phone or in store.

        • Do they have online chat ? Sorry I could not find it….It just asks to fill a form and submit.

          • @ppp13: There's a little red tab that pops up on the right hand side just under the green feedback tab. Probably only visible when they are online.

      • yeah. i tried and Bunnings rejected saying "Awaiting stock" no good

  • Just picked mine up for $269.10 at Bunnings Virginia in QLD. She held one for me came in and she wanted to double check their website. I brought it up on my phone she glanced at it and said all good. Didn’t even matter it said ‘awaiting stock’, I sort of didn’t scroll down or mention it though. Thanks OP.

  • Hello , I just want to check if anyone know how does the return policy work with Bunnings.. I am thinking to get x80 and returning x50 to Bunnings…
