Yeah, that's why I've posted this one.

      • Because of the high failure rate, I myself prefer Amazon easy return/refund.

        • -1

What makes you say there is a high failure rate?

        • +4

Isn't Bunnings refund just as easy?

I also had a P110 with the click of death, Bunnings refunded, no fuss.

          • +2

@tekisei: Definitely just as easy and you can get it replaced straight away if you want. Not to mention you're supporting local jobs

          • @tekisei:

Isn't Bunnings refund just as easy?

But Amazon sometime you can get refund even after warranty.

          • @tekisei: I had to return one to Bunnings not too long ago. Bought with free delivery with OnePass but had to got to a store to get a refund.
Not a huge fuss overall but for something that I agree has a high failure rate a travel-free return is a better idea if you can buy it via that channel.

        • I myself prefer Amazon easy return/refund.

I've never had an issue with returns/refunds at Bunnings.

Recently got a refund on a 3yo Ryobi drill without any questions.

          • @jv: Which in most cases you should given it has a 4 year warranty (plus extra 2 if your registered)

RYOBI offers an extended 2-year warranty on Cordless power tools – ONE+, 36V and 12V tools along with a standard 4-year replacement warranty, provided they are: 1. Purchased from Bunnings after 1 June 2017 2. and registered on a My RYOBI account with a valid Bunnings receipt within 30 days of the purchase date. If you have registered a cordless power tool from the ONE+, 36V or 12V range which meets the above criteria and not received an extended warranty, please contact our customer service team on AUS 1300 My RYOBI (1300 697 9624) or NZ 0508 My RYOBI (0508 697 9624).

        • how often do they fail? i got a 4 pack from harvey norman I think a few weeks ago how long do they last usually?

          • @kungfuman: I don't have P100, but from using various ones, I've lost faith in them, especially ones with energy monitoring and/or USB. Had one failed after one year (lost the receipt). Multiple people reported on issues with both KP115 and P110 (both models have energy monitoring) and I have both of them so they will eventually fail on me.

I don't want to jinx it, but I think simpler ones are less likely to fail (touch wood). Problem is, I bought too many with energy monitoring so not enough sample size on non energy monitoring ones (only 2).

            • @netsurfer: I've got P110s all around the house and have yet had one fail on me. They're plugged into lamps and powerboards for years.

I just bought two of these P100s so they might not support high output so see what happens.

Based on the theory of everything else in life: If they do shit themselves, try doing a full reset on them by holding down the power for ages and see if they kick back in (you'll have to reconfigure them though)

Edit: We have ~45 plugs going (some are put away for Christmas)

              • @Chmmr:

Thought the same, because some used for heater, too much for it.

              • +1

@Chmmr: There are multiple reports on smart plugs breaking (not limiting to TP-Link ones). Mine failed one had the same constant clicking problem (on, off, on, off non stop), same issue as reported by other people. Full reset made zero difference. The main issue for me is if you are not nearby, the plug would be doing that for a while which is not good for the device(s) connected to it (and can break the device(s) which did happen to a few people).

One person opened his faulty ones and turned out to be a blown capacitor in the ones he opened. The main issue is these plugs are made with 'cost effective' components.

I usually just have a child set up an elaborate array of traps including a BB-gun that shoots people in the groin, ice covered steps, red-hot doorknobs, etc.

    • +14

Someone should make a movie about this.

  • +5

IMO the P110 version (at/under $17) is a better investment, as it supports energy monitoring — that feature alone has helped resolve so many arguments at home!

    • IMO the P110 version (at/under $17)

Yeah, will have to wait for it to come down in price.

    • How much is the power consumption diff? Someone said 14W standby for this and I expect for more on the extra monitoring feature.

    • 😅 what kind of arguments are you having about energy usage

      • Dumb ones, usually - but the results can be interesting!

Most recent one was how much energy does the dishwasher use on a 65deg 90min wash vs. a 45deg 170min wash.

        • Wow that is interesting. Longer lower was less energy right?

          • @killingtime: Correct; heating is one of the least energy-efficient things most appliances (except for heat pumps, like split systems) can do.

So it turned out not to be a case of Eco/Normal, but rather Express/Standard — where the faster option was the more expensive one.

I've been using the Meross Smart plug that also has energy monitoring since 12 Jul 2023 to power my heat pump hot water tank. Currently $36.99 for 2x from Amazon. And when they break, refund time :)

It's underneath the eaves of the house, with a plastic box covering it from splashing rain. It's nearly 2 years old and has held up 100% of the time. It's never forgotten to turn on/off the hot water tank.

I believe it should even work when the WIFI's down as the settings and time are stored locally once set.

    • How do you use it to turn on and off the hot water tank? I.e in what situations?

      • If you have solar then during the day.

        • Ahh I see, I just use the timer built into the system but that's a great use case

    • +3

Meross plugs are 4 for $49 at moment on Amazon
      https://www.amazon.com.au/Monitor-Control-Function-Compatibl…

      • What's app to control it?

        • Need to use the Meross App (not Tuya compatible) but there is an addon for Home Assistant.

      • +1

they are massive and block the second socket. one day I need to open one up because when I tap it it sounds very hollow.

        • Wish I'd seen this first, they are really massive. Easily biggest plugin ones I have seen.

  • Any alternatives if I want a specific device to be turned off after a certain amount of time? Not power hungry device.

    • +1

The listing for the above device straight out mentions:

"Create countdown timer lists for connected electronics".

      • Asking becuz of the high failure rate. Want a simpler + more stable one.

        • +1

Low draw devices will be fine… it is the cheap capacitors that can't handle sustained high load.

I've multiple of these running my aquarium pumps (I turn pumps off for 10 minutes a day during feeding time) and CO2 tank.

My oldest one is now 3 years old, and it is fine. Though you are looking at a sample set of 5 plugs. I like these since the app is simple and the plug is compact. But I probably wouldn't use these for any high drain devices, like heaters.

          • +1

@azukay: They are good until they're not, two of mine failed and they weren't doing a lot. One was handling about 150W of load the other one was resetting a WiFi AP every week, they both failed. I've got two others that I've decommissioned as a result, I can't trust them.

The big problem is how they fail, they start switching the relay rapidly on and off until you eventually unplug them.

            • @Hank Scorpion: I get what you are saying, but really you get what you pay for… I won't be putting these on any critical or expensive equipment. Also heat is a big killer of these cheap devices.

I have Asus routers and they have auto scheduled reboot, I am not a fan of using plugs to restart IT devices as they can cause more issue than not.

  • +6

when these fail, they do so in the worst way possible - continually switching on and off

    • yep, I've got the KP115 with a 50% failure rate in 2-3 years.

Two of my 4 devices have failed with the relay continuously fast switching in both cases.

    • This sucks, but I'm glad I heard about it now. I've had some pretty expensive gear plugged into a couple of these for a few months now.

Does anybody have any recommendations for a trustworthy alternative to these?

    • Thank you kind sir for your comment!!
this happened to me literally 5 hrs ago

  • waiting for the ones with energy monitors

  • P110 has energy monitoring but this is pretty good value too. Just don't use on expensive equipment.

  • +1

Thanks OP, picked up a couple for $1 each using combo of JB price match and jb perks voucher.

  • Waiting for more P110M - Matter protocol is the way to go.

  • hope there are same things can support homekit with same low price.

  • I usuallly use them with oil heaters. I turn them on before I go to sleep, so the room is warm.

However, both of them have shown strange behaviour! They turn on by themselves!

Have anyone also faced this issue?

    • Have anyone also faced this issue?

if your WiFi has it connect them to the 2.4Ghz only network.

it solved the issues for me.

      • Yes, I always connect smart devices to 2.4. Still face that issue

  • do other people have a problem with one pass delivery, it seems Kmart/target always cancel orders with free delivery if it's low valued item claiming they don't have stock. it happened to me three times so far

    • +1

my experience has been exceptional…. i got a chairmat from kmart, and it was delivered on saturday evening , well packaged and fast on time, i was so surprised they still working on weekend evening…..

  • +1

Thanks, price matched with JB. For $11 I'm willing to give it a shot.

  • I have one of these and one Kasa. I prefer the Kasa but they don't sell them anymore.

Kasa stores the schedule inside the plug so works even with internet outage. Tapo ones rely on the internet to tell them when to turn on and off.

honestly don't know what TP was thinking by creating 2 ranges. first Kasa and Tapo had their own separate apps, now they combined them into the same app. stopped selling Kasa. why not just make them all the same from the start!!

    • I wish I'd read that before visiting 3 Bunnings stores today, each with stock according to their webpage, and finding none apart from a boxset of 4 for $58. I can't be bothered going out again and discovering BigW has the same webpage promises but no stock, so I'll stick with this set.

Even helpful Bunnings staff said their webpage stock feature is best not consulted - better to ring or visit.

      • same price at amazon. backorder now though 2 weeks out.

  • Ordered 6 yesterday from Bunnings Belrose which showed stock and now cancelled.

    • When I complained about their webpage reporting that these were in stock, Bunnings staff at the first store blamed theft … something rare stocktakes don't detect.

Anyway, got my boxset of 4 P100 switches and they work fine, easy setup and they'll be very handy, so I'm OK with the outcome.

      • Thanks, I just ordered 6 for $66 with free delivery from Officeworks.

        • ok I didn't even think of that one.

I often go in store though and get denied price beat. 😭

  • These were also being cleared at Aus Post for $10 last I saw. But I bought the last 2 or 3 at my local, so didn't get to see them go lower.
