Altitude Qantas Platinum Credit Card: 60,000 Points ($4,000 Spend in 90 Days), $124 1st Year Fee (Existing Customer) @ Westpac

1720

Thanks for picking up a few errors, have been fixed: CaptainHoltisDad & Tandus

60,000 Qantas Points in year 1 if you spend $4k+ on eligible purchases† within 90 days of new card approval and an extra 20,000 points after your first eligible purchase in year 2.

Plus, a reduced first year card fee of $99 or $49 card fee for the first year if you are a Westpac customer (reverts to $175 thereafter).
$75 Annual Qantas Rewards Program fee applies.
Offer not available if you’ve held an Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black card with Altitude Rewards, Qantas or Velocity in the last 12 months. T&Cs apply.

Therefore, if you are a Westpac Customer your annual fee will be reduced to $49, and the Qantas Rewards component will cost you $75 = $124 annual fee
I feel as if this Westpac card is the best value out there for earning Qantas Points at (60,000/$124=) 483 Qantas points per dollar paid in fees

I've done a quick lap around the banks websites and crunched some numbers.
Disclaimer, everything applies below if you haven't held any of these banks specific cards in the last 12 or 18 months (depending on the bank).
Some of these cards have bonus offers if you keep them open for 12 or 18 months, but who'd do that, we just keep churnin'
Any better value out there, please let me know. I know you lot are pretty quick to annihilate every deal and pick it to pieces the second it's posted.
I've smacked this comparison together in 20 minutes, I dare say there might be one or two errors, but it'll point you in the right direction:

Credit Card Annual Fee Sign-Up Bonus Bonus Criteria Qantas Points per Dollar
Westpac Altitude Platinum $124 (reduced) 60,000 points $4k spend in 90 days 483
St George Amplify Platinum $124 (reduced) 60,000 points $3k spend in 90 days 483
St George Amplify Signature $214 (reduced) 90,000 points $6k spend in 90 days 420
Westpac Altitude Black $225 (reduced) 90,000 points $6k spend in 120 days 400
CommBank Smart Awards $60 (+$19 per month under $2k spend) 10,000 points per month for 3 months $1.5k spend each month 500
ANZ Frequent Flyer Black $425-$200 cashback = $225 90,000 points & $200 cashback $5k spend in 90 days 400 (after cashback)
NAB Rewards Premium $150 (reduced) 60,000 points $2k spend in 60 days 400
ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum $295-$100 cashback = $195 75,000 points & $100 cashback $2.5k spend in 90 days 384 (after cashback)
NAB Rewards Signature $295 (reduced) 90,000 points $3k spend in 60 days 305
Qantas Premier Platinum $349 70,000 points $3k spend in 90 days 200
AMEX Ultimate $450 60,000 points $3k spend in 90 days 133
Qantas Premier Titanium $1200 150,000 points $5k spend in 90 days 125

And if you have a business with eligible ABN:

Credit Card Annual Fee Sign-Up Bonus Bonus Criteria Qantas Points per Dollar
NAB Business Signature $295 150,000 points $4k spend in 60 days 508 (after cashback)
AMEX Business Rewards $450 170,000 points $6k spend in 90 days 378 (after cashback)

If you are not turning Qantas Points credit cards you need to start now.
I just booked business return to America for 300K points and $200 in taxes (used additional points to pay less in taxes)

Personally I think 4 really good options with a good mix of number of points vs points per dollar paid in fees would be the below (and I've done all of these in the last 12 months) which would set you back $700 but you'd earn 300K points and get that business class return flight to America for under $1k.

  • Westpac Altitude Platinum $124 Fee, 80,000 points
  • ANZ Frequent Flyer Black: $225 Fee, 90,000 points
  • St George Amplify Platinum: $199 Fee, 70,000 points
  • NAB Rewards Premium: $150 Fee, 60,000 points

Honestly, if you're not churning cards yet, and want to use points for flights, don't start with Qantas. Start with Velocity - way more reward availability

    • +12

No reason not to hedge your bets and do both. I often fly one way with Qantas and back with virgin - just choosing the best flight times and availability.

    • Curious to know which destinations you're finding there's more reward availability?
I haven't found velocity to have particularly better availability, but that might be because of where I'm wanting to go (e.g. Japan, Canada)

      • Velocity is a bit easier to get reward flights in business class to Europe. Agree with you Japan and Canada is better to have Qantas points for reward flights.

        • SQ for Canada internal flights.

    • +4

First card should be the HSBC star alliance linking to Aeroplan card imo. Gold status till end of 2025. Reciprocal status with virgin so you get lounge access etc and 50k Aeroplan is a return economy flight to Asia for about $300 AUD or with 52k points and $400 you can do 1 way to Europe. Also domestically can book virgin flights.

      $0 fee as well.

After that I agree velocity is better. And after the HSBC gold status it's nicer too because any flight you book through velocity that's singapore or virgin gives you stuff like lounge access, priority boarding and using the business desk for check in.

      • Would you mind expanding on this? I’m a long time OneWorld adherent looking to switch to Star Alliance after QF became shit and am about ready to apply for my next card.

This deal. You sign up for a HSBC credit card and choose the airline you want. There are a bunch like Singapore airline etc all from within star alliance.

However the best is air Canadas Aeroplan. For the star alliance gold status they give you a full calendar year. So if you sign up today you get all of this year and all of next year. As well as 50k bonus points.

They also have partnerships with virgin(where they share lounge access) and Emirates(they don't share lounge access) and a bunch of other random stuff that might come up like bamboo airways(not sure about lounge here but you have access to rewards flights at least) for Vietnam.

Air Canada are a pretty generous platform for rewards flights availability as well being pretty good value in regards to out of pocket fees. They also are flexible with points/pay where they have 4 tiers based off how much points you want to spend.

Considering it's $0 for first year and a pretty easy min spend you get a lot. Status and miles are probably worth min $500

          • @fremeer: Super info, thanks! I’m about to move to Vietnam for a while so it sounds like a great deal, will sign up today 👍🏽

            • +1

@zfind: Just bear in mind you need to keep the HSBC CC to maintain Star Alliance benefits.

There's a post for the card with comments discussed at length.

              • @Craze: Thanks Craze, naturally I turned to the OzBargain hive mind to learn all the details about it in that very thread :) For the benefit I don't mind keeping it open for the 1.X years, my credit can accommodate two cards easily enough. I've applied for the card and got conditional approval. Would be nice to get it as I have some SA flights coming up.

          • @fremeer: If I switch from my hsbc platinum card to Star Alliance and opt for Air canada aeroplan, will I get Gold status? I was told switching card does not give the Gold status for first year except for new HSBC customers. Thks

            • @Worldcruiser: From 1st clause in the terms and conditions

"Existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card or customers who have held a HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card within the last 18 months are ineligible for this offer"

    • +2

2nd Tommy's comment - I'm trying to book flights now to Europe and Qantas has FA whereas Virgin offers way more. I'd go for velocity, can never seem to find a way to spend my Qantas points, sitting on 400k.

  • +6

Westpac cards require you to hold the card for 12+ months to get the full 80k and 120k points.

Westpac Altitude Platinum: $124 Annual Fee (reduced), 60,000 points after $4k spend in 90 days = 483 Qantas Points per Dollar
Westpac Altitude Black: $225 Annual Fee (reduced), 90,000 points after $6k spend in 120 days = 400 Qantas Points per Dollar

    • +1

Good pick up legend, noticed it as I was doing the title but forgot to change the body. Sure it's not the only one.

      • +1

No I didn't! I looked at my notepad document and it had been changed by someone else. Thanks again

    • +3

$100 for 30k points is worth it for me. There’s only so many you can churn in a year.

    • +2

Not sure if I am reading the website correctly or not but the Altitude Platinum cards says it's free for existing members…. Offer looks different "90,000 Rewards Points in year 1 if you spend $3k+ on eligible purchases† within 90 days of new card approval"

      https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/rew…

      • The card referred to in this post is actually Altitude Qantas Platinum.

        • Look at my link, I'm referring to your comment about Westpac Altitude Platinum. It says $0 for existing clients for me and the spend amount is different.

          • +3

@tabboy: Correct..that is for the non qantas card.

I went with that myself, will convert to a non qantas option (ie. Velocity).

            • +1

@tunzafun001: Yea for $0 I'm going to do the same :)

              • +1

@tabboy: All went seamlessly..approved..$3k spent, points landed in 2 months.
Keeping open for a bit longer for the travel insurance (car hire excess cover).

                • +1

@tunzafun001: approved, digital card issued, and first transaction within 5 business hours.
                  happy with that.

      • The comments never fail!

  • +6

I have this card but the Velocity variant, but I applied for the 6k minimum limit and got rejected, got on the phone to the assessment team and asked them to adjust the limit down to 2k in which it then got approved. For some reason you cannot apply for less than 6k in the application but then the assessment team was happy to give me whatever limit I wanted after I got the rejection letter.

I want to do the same for NAB but not sure if they would have this level of flexibility…

Easiest was AmEx… 100k points sign-up bonus and they didn't even verify the financials I put in the application…

    • +1

Was Amex one of the first cards you got? I don't even bother applying as I hear they don't like churners

      • AmEx was the 4th card I got within a 12 month period. Although I didn't churn in previous years. They approved me for 26k limit no questions asked basically despite having 5k of other credit cards as well as home loans. YMMV

  • +8

    Good write up mate!

Those big reward cards from a few years ago have all been downgraded but the fee has remained the same or increased! not sure how the experts explain shrinkflation on credit cards…

    • Cuz banks always want to increase their profits just like any other company

    • +1

It is a good write up but not a good comparison for those who don't know much about cards. It doesn't factor in all the bonuses, and especially how many points you earn per dollar spent. A good way to compare would be the same way Qantas does it on their website where you enter total amount spent per month and change to 1 year to find out how many points you would accumulate in 1 year. The results will be vastly different to the above

      • Most cards offer between .75 and 1 point per dollar spent, and you’re not manipulating the system if you hold the card open for 12 months. The second you get your bonus offer points, cancel and onto the next. So add an additional 1500 to 6000 points to each deal based on .75 points for a $2k spend to trigger points or 1 point per dollar spent for $6000 spend

  • Is there any bonus for being a first time Qantas points customer?

    • There was a post earlier today with a suitable card for you having not earned qantas points before.

  • Qantas Points per Dollar
St George Amplify Signature: $370 Annual Fee, 90,000 points after $60k spend in 90 days = 243

Definitely deserves more points for this card than just 90,000

  • +6

smashed it in 2 months, got paid my points and got a pro-rata refund. onto the next….

    • Good to know - I wasn't sure if you ot the points early once you reached the min. spend.

    • +1

so if you cancel before 12 months you get the pro rated annual fee back??

      • Some banks dont, but if you talk to live chat or call customer service youll have a decent chance at it

        • +1

Sometimes you have to try multiple agents on chat and phone, I've been successful after 3 or 4 attempts with some banks, others have been a total fail with no wiggle room

          • +1

@cook99: I've had pro-rata refund with ANZ before as well. I often ask before signing up as well and have them document it.

It makes the annual fee less relevant.

I am aiming for a 4-bank rotation per annum but as mentioned it is getting tougher with some extending their eligibility criteria to 18 months.

            ANZ > NAB > Westpac > AMEX

or something to that effect with others in consideration being Qantas official card, St George/BOM/BankSA, Citi

            • @89tnp: Are you me?
I'm on the same rotation hahaha

            • @89tnp: I would apply for AMEX earlier. Keep hearing Amex is rejecting card churners..

Just got my NAB Rewards Premium, will apply for Amex next when they increase the promo points, hopefully in June or so.
              Then ANZ and St George

    • Love it. That’s why I love qantas points so much because they land in your qantas account at the statement period every time. Cash back and other points programs not frequent flyer related can take upwards of 3 months.

    • Glad to hear it. I was thinking to take it (or another CC) and buy my Christmas holiday flights with it (around $6K) and then churn eventually. You think Airplane tickets will be valid as everyday purchase?

  • +1

I looked but might have missed it - does it say anywhere re: international purchases being excluded / not counted as eligible purchases?

    • +1

Normally international purchases give you additional qantas points per $ (minimal) but you pay 3% international transaction fee. From my research CommBank has an offer last year when i was overseas which was no international transaction fees. I believe their card may be the only one with it.

  • +1

    Good comparison OP
St George Amplify Platinum is actually 60,000 points in first year, additional 10,000 for 2nd year

Also worth noting that for existing customers:

St George Amplify Platinum: $124 fee ($49 first year fee + $75 rewards fee) for 60,000 points
St George Amplify Signature: $214 fee ($139 first year fee + $75 rewards fee) for 90,000 points

So the St George offers are slightly better than the other cards offering a similar amount of bonus points

    • Good one mate, thankyou, fixed.

  • +1

I applied for this card today.

When they ask about your expenses, it's pretty confusing. They ask about your household expenses, then about your 'other' household expenses, then what your % share of household expenses. That's it - and once you submit you can't go back. I told them I had an investment property but then nothing about the expenses related to that, and it wasn't clear to me if it was meant to go in the household question.

  • Westpac is by far the worst bank in the country. Applied for a credit card and was declined - never for a second did they let me input rent income for my investment property.

As a former credit worker - their processes are rubbish and do not factor in the full picture of your finances.

Save yourself a credit check and go with Amex.

    • +3

Funny enough, I've been churning for 10+ years. Got declined for a measley $3k CBA card (and I have a wealth package with them and have excellent finances). Got this Westpac card no probs.
Will submit an AFCA complaint for CBA (terrible… terrible bank).

      • +2

CBA are the worst. I applied for the ultimate card with a 6k limit a couple years back and they approved me for a completely different card at 5k limit. Was so sneaky. I did lodge a complaint and ended up with the card I wanted and the 6k limit. Was a total bait and switch and they didn't make it clear that the approved card was a different one. Considering cancelling the card soon as they reduced the travel insurance benefit.

        • Similar thing happened to me a few months ago. Applied for the Smart Awards card (tier below the Ultimate). Got rejected and bumped down to the standard Awards card with a $2.8k limit with no notice. I was told that based on my income and existing credit (mortgage, credit cards, etc.) that they can only lend me $2.8k.

I had just closed three credit card accounts with $45k of credit to move onto a single $15k credit card with them. Even submitted the account closure letters with the application. In the process of moving all my accounts away from them now.

          • @poo: Crazy. Yeah the whole process just didn't sit right with me. I have the smart awards at the moment but now that they have changed the eligibility criteria for the travel insurance I will likely cancel it after our next trip in September.

    • +2

A lot of people have said the same thing of being rejected by Amex without a valid reason… I think YMMV is the best advice for any bank.

  • What do most people use to consistently spend those amounts per 2 or 3 months?

    • +2

      Ladies of the night

      • +4

I presumed that was a cash only job, makes sense they would let you tap and go

    • Food and booze.

    • +2

It’s really not that hard to spend $5k in 3 months is it?
Fuel, groceries, car/home insurance, power bill, home ware, clothes, meals out, drinks, coffees, holidays, OzBargain deals.
I mean come on, it’s easy to spend $5k in a month if you put your mind to it

      • I mean yes, i already do but im trying to see if I can get mrs ironic fear onto churning as well but im not sure we can both consistently do so.

Side note: how are you getting power bill onto it, I thought bpay and the common bill paying methods didnt count?

        • +1

Not the previous commenter, but the last few power providers I've been with all take credit card.

    • You can buy gift cards and deposit the balance in your ATO account (and pay of any upcoming debts or get the money included in your tax refund)

      https://www.pointhacks.com.au/ato-points-earning-cards/

    • +1

stock up your woolie gift cards with 4% off, $500 e-gift cards for $480, get 6 or 7 of them, job done

  • I’m a bit of a credit card dummy - just using the card that comes with our home loan. We don’t travel very much and have little need for Qantas/Velocity points.

Our current credit card gives us rewards that we can cash in for retail gift cards that we use for big purchases (as a young couple with kids, there’s plenty of big purchases).

Can the Qantas points earned with these cards be redeemed for gift cards in the same way?

    • If you’re buying gift cards or Qantas store items you’re probably doing it wrong.
Invest a little time into reading about the best way to use FF points. Usually it’s flying that gets the best deal, often by buying a regular ticket & using points to upgrade. I’m not saying it’s easy to do, but if you want value for the points you earn, start reading, churning cards & get down here where all the other OzBargainers hang out.

    • +1

If you don’t fly much, it would be better to sign up for credit cards which have a bonus paid as points from the bank - just like your current card, but with the large sign-up bonuses.
Just keep churning through one card at a time, cancelling each card every time you have received the bonus and redeemed for gift cards.

  • Looking at NAB Business card. They make you link your accounting software (Xero, MYOB etc.) to apply. Seems to be the only way

  • what do you use qantas point for?

  • wow, i thought the black card was better than the platnium ones

    • it is, with more complimentary purchase insurance, lounge access, more points per dollar and monthly point cap

  • +2

Have a + from me just for all the research and summary in description 👏

    • +2

Yes, commendable effort. Should be put on a wiki as best way to churn the system.
For me I usually go with Westpac & ANZ each year and alternate other issuers when needed.
A word of caution about AMEX though. They have cracked down on churners & are refusing cards even if you meet the 18 months “without” exemption.

      • +1

Can confirm. Got rejected by Amex, assume because I've churned a few cards. Annoying part was that I was planning to hold the Amex long term. I guess it wasn't meant to be lol.

      • +1

Yep, AMEX is the only one who knocks me back, based on I assume how often I cancel cards. The rest dont seem to care.

  • +1

Personally think that the extra 30k points that come with the Altitude Black is worth the extra $100 AF, but great research!

    • Definitely. Even if you only valued Qantas Points at a very low 0.5 cents each that outweighs the additional $101 annual fees.

However some people may struggle with eligibility and/or the higher spend requirement.

  • +1

Not currently a member. Can I sign up first and then apply for this CC to be eligible for the 1st year existing member fee? I tried looking at the T&Cs and couldn't see anything about waiting periods.

    • +2

Just open an account and then do the application for this.

  • A noob question: does the passenger name have to be the same as the Qantas member name? (I.e. can i use the points to upgrade for my family member?)

    • No, you may use your QFF account to book for anyone.

    • You can use points to book and/or request upgrade for a family member (or in-laws or domestic partner etc).

  • +1

    Good comparison, thanks OP

  • I started an application and after putting in my personal details(name, address) it just said they will call me. Weird

  • +1

    Nice work on the table.

CommBank Smart Awards 10,000 points per month for 3 months

The offer increases to 15,000 bonus points for CommBank Yello tier members. 45,000 bonus points after 3 months is not great, not terrible.

The card also has no international transaction fees.

    • I had the CommBank Smart Awards card this time last year, having this card travelling America was fantastic. Most hospitality venues in America require an actual credit card for starting a tab, they don't like using travel money cards, so this was perfect.

It's really annoying I didn't cancel it until July, so can't use it again this year when I'm back in America. it's the only Credit Card (I can find) that offers no international transaction fees.

      • The coles rewards mastercard has no international fees as well

        • Received an email that this is ending this June

  • Which bank does 18 months? Other than AMEX.

    • +2

      NAB

This bonus points offer is not available to existing customers who have received or are entitled to receive NAB Qantas Rewards Bonus Points for a new personal NAB Qantas Rewards credit card in the 18 months prior to the opening of a NAB Qantas Rewards Signature Card or a NAB Qantas Rewards Premium Card (increased from 12 months prior to the opening for accounts opened before 30 November 2022).

  • I have around 250k QFF points but have never really used them on a flight yet (besides the odd domestic). What provider would be best if I wanted to travel to Europe/Canada/Asia?

    • +1

That's 3 different continents. Full list of partner airlines here.

Europe probably Qatar / Emirates, Asia - Malaysia Airlines / Japan Airlines / China Airlines, Canada - American Airlines
