      Try a different store.

      • Called 9 stores over the past hour no stock.

        • +7

I’m surprised you got 9 store to pick up and give you an answer within an hour.

  • +10

Does not support iOS17 and beyond.

    • But it's not 7 years yet, hasn't it (as of released on September 22, 2017)? I thought iPhones would come with 7 yrs support. Let's see pixel 8 in 2023.

      • +8

there's no where officially it says 7 years from apple though? just assumption based on previous devices.

        • +2

Fair. And Google said it by 2030 by then there gonna be some sort of AI support made by Google.

        • +1

My web search found posts with comments like "Apply typically provides N years support" but that may refer to minor updates and security patches and not to iOS major version updates.

This apple site lists the models compatible with each iOS version:
          https://support.apple.com/en-bh/guide/iphone/iphe3fa5df43/17…
iPhone 8 is compatible with iOS 16 and is not compatible with iOS17.

I also found a comment that iOS 16 "will undoubtedly get minor updates and security patches for a year or so, just as ios 15 is still receiving security updates today" but I didn't find an Apple site with a definitive answer.

          • +1

@Flenser: Apple "typically provides N years of support" refers to major iOS updates. However, the main issue is that is that is based on iPhones after 6S. iPhone 6S currently holds the record of 7 major iOS versions (6 major iOS updates). The general expectation is at least 4 years of major iOS update support. However, those updates don't mean you get all the features as Apple do reserve new features to newer iPhones.

The latest iOS 15 security update was Jan 2024. Apple could still provide more security updates (it depends on what security vulnerabilities get discovered).

      • +1

Theoretically iOS support goes beyond 7 year mark in general. You can see vintage models occasionally get security updates. Just no more feature updates.

    • +5

      Its $99

      • +4

Something being cheap does not equal to a bargain.

We are here for quality products at less than RRP.

        • But my Nokia cost more and does less than 72 things.

        • Find a better phone with the years of updates this lacks at this price then. It sold out quickly so clearly has value to some. Ideal low cost phone for clumsy children for example.

        • People are paying for the software, not the old hardware. $99 is a bargain for IOS.

    • +21

And they definitely dont do the..
"72 Point Inspection and in-depth testing"

Nor are they "refurbished" other than wiped clean and put in a new box with a new non-genuine cable and charger.
Not what anyone would consider "refurbished"

      Nor are they 'premium"

If you have bought one of these refurbished iPhones from Coles before you would agree.
Most have issues and are scratched as well. ….evidence of what I've said.

      Biggest CON JOB ever!

The labor alone to do the 72 Point Inspection and in-depth testing would cost more than the $99 asking price of phone, let alone the cost of proper refurbishing

      • +3

Agree with you but your neg doesnt make sense.

        • +4

Its obviously great value on the surface

But the issues with being completely misrepresented causes me to cast a neg vote.

          Past experience!

      • +3

Having brought 3 of these devices from Coles, they are all have been excellent quality.

        • +2

You can be lucky. yes of course.

Ive had issues with 3 out of 3 in the past.

And all the false and misleading misrepresentations.

          • @HeWhoKnows: I wonder if it comes down to different batches. I did notice my batch of iphone 8s were all Japanese models (red).

            • @CptnObvious: Seems they get them from anywhere then.
              Except Australia

              • @HeWhoKnows: Don't really care if it works fine, though I am sure I had one AU. The japanese models I had had the relevant band support for 4G.
I guess you just have to check the model when they bring out the phone. For this price (given that I brought them in 2023), it was a bit of no brainer.

        • Off topic but why 3? Some use case I'm unaware of?

      • But if it lengthens my phallus it is sure worth a mislay 99 bucks!

      • +2

Here’s the 72 point inspection criteria:

        It’s a phone: 72 points
        It’s a sandwich: 0 points

        This one scored 72 points.

      • You're correct. These are NOT refurbished and are just purely resold phones.

In my case, the phone was heavily worn, scratched and had a bad battery.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/773810#comment-13732769

They did end up refunding but the process was time consuming and I wouldn't recommend it. It's such a lottery and the term "refurbished" was misleading.

here's a picture of the scratches.

    • I wonder how many $99 phones run the latest version of an OS and are going to get further support?

      • +1

iPhone 8 is being supported by Apple currently.

But is next cab off the rank to be dropped off.

Could be a while yet so not an issue.

But even the iphone 6s and 7 contiune to receive important "security" updates.
Just not eligible for full iOS upgrades..
They top out at iOS 15.

        • +1

iPhone 8 doesn't run iOS 17 so iPhone 8 only receives important security updates now (iOS 16).

The next ones which are likely not going to get iOS 18 could be iPhone XR, XS. However, at the moment, the general consensus is that iOS 18 is not going to drop any device support.

    • Also does not support latest WatchOS

  • Thanks OP

Didn’t realise Coles sold refurb old iPhones.

Handy to know for a just-in-case secondary quick phone purchase.

    • +1

      They come and go.
      Not a regular stock item.
So dont count of them having any stock

As others have said, this iPhone 8 stock is already sold out.

    • +1

      Realistically, they’re used phones.

Refurbished phones would have parts replaced to near-new condition. These are just cleaned, put in a box and sold.

  • +2

    What about battery?

    • +1

For $99 do you think it matters?….. if it didnt last a day or thereabouts complain and i am sure they would take it back

    • +14

The clean and wipe and placing in a new box is thier so called "refurbishment" and doesnt include a new battery.
Thats my biggest issue with describing these as "refurbished"..
Clearly they are not refurbished at all. Nor are they comprehensively checked.
Its more like a quick visual inspection.

And here is the real catch….These are US models so not 100% compatible with our Australian networks.
They are missing at least one important band - which is not used in the US.

According to the supplier, 80% battery health is considered "acceptable" even though Apple suggests replacement once battery health hits 80%. .
Aparently if battery health is below 80% they do replace the battery before selling the phone.

They are not very forthcoming with warranty claims either.
They draw out the claim process to weeks and ask for a whole lot of questions and evidence etc, then more again.
Then finally when you get an OK to return the phone, it takes 3 to 4 weeks to get a replacement (its not the same phone)
So all up it can take 8 weeks to get a warranty replacement and probably not as good as the original purchased from Coles.

In my case the original had a very obvious camera issue (like black screen). I mean how do you miss that??? …So much for checking!
but the battery health was 90% so great.
But the replacement came back with only 80% battery health.
and only a month later the replacement phone developed (low volume)..speaker issues

Now here is another catch - they only allow ONE warranty claim - so I was "stuffed".
So its obvious they try to fob you off with any warranty claims is my experience.

      • Username checks out

      • +2

Should have escalated to consumer affairs after the one warranty claim bs. Their warranty T&Cs do not trump ACL

      • If I walk down Kings Cross at midnight and the showdown asks me to lay it on the table, surely this would be less of a risk?

  • Best to call your local Cole’s first, if they don’t have can take a while to get a refund, my locals never have ☹️

    • +3

      Agreed
The have 30 day satisfaction guarantee which is great.
So if battery health is low you can take it back and get another one.

That is IF they have any more stock.

  • How does this work if it doesnt support the latest IOS ?

    • +20

It runs previous version of iOS.

      • +1

        lmao

    • -1

Its still supported for important updates. My iPhone 7+ won't upgrade to iOS 16… I'm on iOS 15.8.2. Most apps work but some don't. The Apple Store app just stopped working for me but I can still use the store in Safari. Remember its a 4G handset & 3G will be switched off by the end of the year so, you will be relying on VoLTE with 4G after that & 3G coverage is better in rural areas for voice.

      :-)

      • -1

Thats deliberately done so you have to upgrade, the apps do still work, but they are disabled by OS

        • I'm not gonna roll back for an app. If it is crucial, I'll get another iPhone. I'm just holding out for the iPhone 16 Pro Max with the larger screen. So… Septemberish.

          :-)

    • -1

The iPhone 8 does support the latest iOS, so it works just fine.
And will continue to do so for at least a couple of years

      • +2

No, iPhone 8 doesn't support latest iOS (iOS 17 - released Sep 2023).

iPhone models compatible with iOS 17 from Apple Web site - iPhone 8 and iPhone X are NOT there.

iPhone 7 and 8 didn't get the same number of years as 6S because there are less devices running those CPUs. iPhone XR and XS are the next ones on the chopping block. There are also iPad Mini (5th gen), Air (3rd gen), iPad (8th gen) with A12 (so quite a lot of devices). Currently, analysts think Apple won't drop iOS 18 support for them, but that's not confirmed.

        • Oh dear

iPhone 8 and 10 knocked out already after 6s and 7 knocked out for iOS 16.

          Thanks for the update

  • Any band issues with these being US imports?

    • Band issues? iphones are a worldly phone and has pretty much every band

    • Make sure it has Band 28 for 700Mhz LTE.

      • What's the band 28 equivalent for 5G these days

        • The iPhone 8 isn't 5G.

      • We use Band 28 in Australia for 4G, among other bands. Last I heard the US uses 700Mhz but its a different numbered band & I'm not sure of its specific number/s.
When I bought my iPhone 7+ I bought it from Hong Kong so I would have every frequency, including CDMA with the Qualcomm radio (With that crazy throttling debacle between Intel & them at the time). Now, new iPhones are world-phones & cover all the bands needed.
I'm just saying Band 28 is a must in Australia.

        :-)

    • +1

With earlier models (6s and 7) US modesl did not have the same band coverage as Global models.
But with iPhone 8 and particularly 4G coverage, its all the same in both US and AU.

The Global model (A1863) is slightly different to model A1905 used by AT&T and T-mobile in the US.
And then Japan has its own model A1906
So depends on the model being imported from the US - Hopefully the A1863

      See here:
A1863 USA (C Spire, Sprint Wireless, US Cellular, Verizon), Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, China - includes CDMA bands
      A1905 (EMEA, UAE, LATAM, Canada, USA - AT&T/T-Mobile, Singapore);
      A1906 (Japan)

4G bands are the same in both countries.

  • +1

Cheap price for an iPhone but buying a 64gb phone in 2024 ain't gonna cut it. Also the iPhone 8 probably won't get updates for much longer (if it hasn't stopped already).

    • -2

Unless you have phone with micro SD that supports up to 400GB extra for removable backups (eg. the excellent Galaxy Note 8 with too many sensors & S-Pen ;)

  • +1

spend a bit more on a SE these are a bit slow

    https://browser.geekbench.com/mobile-benchmarks

    • Isn't an SE more like $200? That's double.

  • +1

    currently unavailable on coles online

  • +2

    ordered it no issues

  • just ordered 1.
Need it for fold 6 Ultra Trade in.

    • +3

wouldn't be shocked if Samsung move up and offer $0 on the iPhone 8.

  • Very old and very slow phone, incompatible with latest updates.

Bought one of these about six months ago. Was in great physical condition but battery health was only 80%

    • You would think during refurbishment process they would change the battery

      • +6

That’s because these are really just Used, like 99% or so-called ‘Refurbished’ phones sold on here and eBay.
Nothing is replaced, they just reset the phone, wipe it with a cloth and do some basic hardware checks to ensure everything is in working order.

        • I bought one of these for $129 on the previous deal with Coles and it has had the battery replaced - it’s at 100% health. The phone otherwise is almost mint.

          • @lppepper: On the contrary, if it's had a replacement battery it would've been used a lot more which would have warranted it's replacement when it was passed over and "refurbished"

            • @Butterfly Gocha: Honestly hard to tell if it was used much since the rest of the one is like almost new…

      • +1

A replacement battery service from Apple costs more than the $99 they are asking for the phone.

    • My Pixel 2 XL has it beat in benchmarks and I couldn't imagine paying $100 for that in 2024.

      • Refurbished 2x'sl are selling for more than $100, still good value at the $130ish they can be had for during eBay sales in my opinion.

        • Might sell mine then, thinking of grabbing the Motorola Fusion 20 for $279 on Amazon

  • +4

good for use as a 7/11 locking device im sure, seems to still be supported

    • +1

      For now

    • +1

use geoport github (google it) works with iOS 17

      • Didnt hear about Geoport till now. TIL

        Thanks

      • oh neat! like ifakelocation on steroids. wonder why they (presumably) forked it

  • For $99 it is good, if it can make calls, watch and play stuff & do some light app work I'd say take it.
But if you want something that will actually last and be supported OS side, wait for the Motorola's to be on sale, they'll flog the I8.

  • +2

Got ours at Casey Central. Don't just look on the shelf. It won't be on display. Ask the staff. It's in a locked cabinet.

  • Thanks needed a cheap phone to manage the kids family mobiles

  • Some of these sold through Coles previously were ex-Japan domestic models that have the camera sound activated which cannot be disabled (to deter inappropriate photography on stairs/escalators in their origin market)

    • -2

It can be disabled once activated with Aussie Sim

  • +4

Most new banking apps like anz plus support only last 2 os versions. So be mindful when buying old phones

    • Valid point

    • +1

Sorry to disappoint you, for the moment, ANZ Plus app supports iOS 15, 16 and 17. That's 3 iOS versions.

All big 4 bank apps support iOS 15. It actually has less to do with how many iOS versions. It has more to do with the devices (i.e. the lowest end i-device(s) banks are willing to support). Support for iOS 15 will eventually drop, but when that happens, iOS 16 won't be very safe either.

      • +1

I did a check the other day for this reason. Most big IOS apps support fairly old versions, it's nowhere near as bad as it used to be a few years ago.
