Not financial advice? This is almost definitely financial advice related to your income tax

General rule of thumb is items over $300 can be an immediate deduction in full, those over $300 need to be depreciated over its lifespan. If it was me doing it I would work on the assumption that it needs to be depreciated

For an Airbnb I’d also go a pod machine - people are idiots and will generally find a way to screw up using this (no matter how simple it actually is to use).

      • +7

        *1 to people are idiots.

          • @Jjklark: ICYMI Cheapo is merely agreeing that Airbnb guests will often be idiots and would mess up using the machine.

Although "*1" is not really adding to the discussion.

          • @Jjklark: "can this be bought for an Airbnb and be claimed as a deduction? Is it treated as a lump sum deduction?"

I'm not sure but that sounds like you're asking about a matter that relates to taxes that impacts your financial situation, if someone answers you they're providing advice. The comment you responded too was about AirBNB guests breaking such things and not your OP.

I'm people and I can confirm I'm an idiot.

Thanks! This factual advice is what I was after.

      • +1 for a pod machine in Airbnb.

We have the model down from this machine (without the latte-go bit). It’s a great little machine, makes drinkable coffee. Quick to heatup, very easy to use. My lazy preference is for the non-latte version as milk means things need to be properly cleaned more regularly.
Our version has a steam wand that does a good job steaming milk, but no pipes and other crap to be cleaned of milk.

Other thing to note is it does need to be cleaned internally about once a month, otherwise to random warm damp coffee grounds inside start growing their own little eco-system. No doubt in an airbnb someone will open it, find some mould and give you a 1-star review as a result.

        • Good point re cleaning, thanks.

          non-latte version

          a.k.a. black coffee

          • @pizzaguy: Well it has a steam wand… so steam your milk in a milk jug and make a latte. Easy.

        • +1

oh I'm sure the coffee machine will find its way back to his kitchen after a period in the airbnb..

    • Just get a pod machine, unless you want to be cleaning this for years to come.

  • I am seriously considering order it as trial. I couldn't find condition about 90 day return anywhere. Yelp?

    • That will be directly with Philips. They have a 90 day satisfaction guarantee on a bunch of their products (I think you have to own them for a certain duration 30 days maybe?).

It’s something to the effect of you can own the product for a minimum of 30 days and a maximum of 90 days to get your money back

      • +1

Though factor in you will need to pay for the return postage to Philips. Probably not a huge expense if you consider it 85 days of coffee machine hire!

    • Need to pay your postage at auspost.
Will be quite expensive for such a big machine.

  • Can it produce coffee of the same quality as that from a coffee shop? I've only had experience with automatic coffee machines at 5-star hotel breakfasts, and they've always left me frustrated, prompting me to buy coffee elsewhere. I'm unsure whether it's an issue with the hotel or the capabilities of the automatic coffee machine.

    • +4

No automated home coffee machine will match a coffee shop coffee. The espresso shot is too thin.

If you want coffee shop coffee you need to spend much more on a proper espresso machine, quality beans, and the time and effort to become a coffee snob to learn how to use it properly.

This will give you a home coffee good enough to drink multiple times per day without leaving home (on the proviso you feed it fresh quality beans), for a fraction of the cost and effort of going to a cafe. You can always continue to buy a good coffee from a cafe to supplement your coffee needs.

      • +1

Yeah this. If you want proof look at the video in its Amazon review, that shot comes our way too quick and it will taste ‘weak’.

Although I would say even a very cheap manual machine paired with fresh beans and someone who knows what they’re doing will give you better results than an automatic machine will using fresh beans

Back to $619 at Bing Lee, so expect this Amazon price to expire soon.

  • looks like the 4300 is also on sale at $639 https://www.amazon.com.au/Automatic-intuitive-different-EP43…

nvm saw you just added that!

    • +1

Yep. Deal post here. Mentioned at the bottom of this deal.

Also a Bing Lee price match, but Bing Lee sale finished, so might not last much longer either.

      • ended up snagging it, hope it's solid!

  • Price increased to $619.00 now.

  • i've got this and a barista express. it takes a lot of trial error with the right combination of settings and beans to get a drinkable coffee. you are always going to get a better cuppa with a manual machine and steam wand with the trade off being extra time and effort

  • We have this and delonghi magnifica evo. Not much in price difference when on special, but Evo is miles better and makes stunning coffee.
