I bought one this morning. Have tested it for distances up to 8m alongside a measuring tape and it's been bang on (plus/minus 3mm at worst and I wasn't trying very hard). Couldn't get distances less than 27cm but I wouldn't be using this for that purpose. Tried outside on the deck and got up to 21m which is more or less exactly what it should be.

I tested the Pythagoras options to measure a height and didn't get great results but that is understandable as I'm assuming because a slight angle for the "horizontal" measurement could significantly impact the other one or two readings. You would need an in-built level for this to work better but again, I won't be using this feature so haven't tested it too much, in theory it should work perfectly.

The physical size is surprisingly small but it feels fairly sturdy. The laser has absolutely no issues being seen at 20m inside. Outside, I needed to move the laser from being next to me to the point so I could track it as it's obviously a lot fainter outside, still worked though.

I think it's worth it for the seldom times I need one.

Do you think bright sunlight outside would affect measurement? I have a decent 8m tape but sometimes I’m thinking it would be way more convenient to use a laser based measure for big areas

Hard to say sorry, I would test but it's pretty overcast in Brisbane this afternoon. I did just test it again outside and had no real issues measuring a telegraph pole across the road at 18m so that was full "light" with no shade. I would imagine you would far less in full light, and it'd be particularly hard if you are trying to pinpoint against a small object, but this isn't specific to the this device but the technology.

In theory though as long as it receives a reflection, the accuracy shouldn't be impacted?

I have an earlier model. The laser dot can be hard to spot in the full sunlight but I don't think it affects measurements other than if you miss your target.

  • Bought one, arrived today. My lord it's small. It's like 1/4 the size of the package, almost the size of a key-fob for a car, lol. Works alright though, haven't used onside yet.

Question: Would using some sort of laser target board be beneficial when measuring the length of a fence, so the laser can bounce off, or will placing something at the end of the fence line suffice?
