One of the most ambitious double albums ever made, so many memories associated with this growing up as a kid.

Description from Amazon link:

Limited four vinyl LP pressing. Digitally re-mastered edition of the Alt-Rock quartet's 1995 career-defining double album. Originally released October 24, 1995, the album would debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified 9x platinum by the RIAA. It yielded major hits like "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" the band's unlikely first Top 40 hit the exquisite "1979" and epic "Tonight, Tonight" as well as a thoroughly inspired series of videos. Produced by Billy Corgan, Flood and Alan Moulder, the album would also earn a Grammy Award (1996 Best Hard Rock Performance for "Bullet with Butterfly Wings") as well as seven nominations. Beyond the more obvious hits, though, Mellon Collie is a song cycle of unusual depth and considerable range. It is a collection of stunningly beautiful moments when everything lined up-a moment in time that's still here to be treasured.

Finally an actual bargain price for a vinyl record. Thanks for sharing!

  • Good price!

    Love this album.

Classic album! I still have the almost 30 year old double CD which I bought at a Virgin Megastore back in the day.

Don't know if I'd pay this much for the vinyl version though.

    • metoo

      • And me too

Mine arrived on the weekend, it was my favourite album growing up and thought it would be a nice reminder.

It is a fantastic box set, artwork is great, it has a book covering every song and it's origin, plus another lyric book and all the records are double sleeved, with art it's one of the nicest box sets I have ( I have quite a lot of vinyl)

      • +1 to everything mr window said. This set is brilliant and an absolute steal at this price. Beautiful set.

I got mine from the sale a couple weeks back at about $130 and I am more than happy having paid that.

    • I threw all my CDs away for some reason. Oops.

I'm seeing these guys in Lucca, Italy in July. Really looking forward to it.

    • So jealous, for both music and location! At least I've got some new vinyl coming as small consolation.

      • I don't have a working LP player anymore so I am jealous that you do.

    • me 2, let's meet up

      • Oh for sure.

Saw them in Sydney last year. Did not disappoint.

If you can, get your hands on the live recording for their Oceania 2012 tour. There's a DVD and Blu-ray plus CD recording of the entire set in NY at the Barclays Centre. My favorite performance and probably my favorite lineup.

Here's a taste of a few songs they posted on YoutTube. Love the Ava Adore version (the guitar solos towards the end) but my favorite on the album is The Celestial.

Nice one, thanks for sharing. Looks like it was a good gig.

I went to the V festival in 2008, not that I remember much of it sadly… I'd had a few David Hasselfroths.

        • +1

Listen to the whole album. It’s awesome. On rotation for me a lot. Might take 3 listens to really appreciate it but it’s one of their best live sets.

        • +2

That was a great tour - I was just listening to the Horden Pavilion show the other day - such a great set.

Here's the recording from their set at V Festival though https://archive.org/details/tsp2008-03-29.spcmc2

Enjoy :) I was at this show too

        • How rude of me. I complete forgot about this performance from their 1996 Mellon Collie tour. This version of the song rocks and Jimmy on the drums is a complete monster. I believe this is literally right before the band's tour was disrupted because of the death of Jonathan Melvoin because Jimmy and him were shooting up.

Watch all the way through, it builds and builds and is best towards the end.

Saw em live in Sydney mid 90s, awesome band and concert!

      • +1

Me too. That was the first time I had seen them when they toured for this album. I can't remember it but all I know is that it was great.

    • Will they play Rhinoceros.

  • +6

Hey it's my namesake! Pumpkins fan from way back, I've got the original (but non numbered) vinyl. Amazing album

  • +4

Got mine delivered just in 1 week!
Can firm it came from USA.
There is a sticker on the record which says made in Germany which is cool. This is My first ever record so idk if that’s normal. and in typical ozbargain style I got this before I got a turn table. (Thought it had 1 month to get myself a turn table but turns out I had a week)

  • +2

Pretty great album, wouldn't say it's hi-fidelity this style of recording, but why not. dangerous on LP would be super clean (on a different note - two parts digital).

  • +5

Collecting vinyl is so darn expensive. I would never pay $100 for a record. We paid $30 for CDs back in the 90s and thought that was overpriced.

    • +1

I mean……houses in the 90s were also like 100k - But you need to think of Vinyls more like collectibles (beanie babies, funkopops, coins, stamps etc) rather then something people actually buy to use.

    • -1

Records are a keep sakes firstly for most people. But if you own a good setup you can become something of an audiophile. Hobby appreciating great mastering of a specific record (see discogs before you buy), the combination of stylus, preamp and speakers pump out excellent sound to your favourite music.

Often with older bands it was the way it was produced and mastered was to be heard from stereo (or mono) vinyl record and the track lifts up and sings compared to a run of the mill digital counterpart.

    • +2

Correct, I bought this on CD, and it's the better medium anyway. I'm not paying more for pops and crackles, and to be cool.

If you are an audiophile I wouldn't buy a lot of these grunge/distortion albums, won't sound better than a cd or mp3 rip. It's all to so with the mastering as mentioned, especially dynamic range. Vinyl won't sound better it's more tangible and nostalgic.

    • CDs in Australia were always overpriced in Australia during the 80s/90s.

      • I only started buying them in 95 onwards or there abouts, the normal price was about $30-32, maybe $35. Often discounted though.

        • I used to enjoy finding good albums for cheap, either on sale at a shop or even a garage sale, but I guess they're all overpriced in hindsight as I don't listen to any of them anymore (I got plenty of use at the time, so I guess it could be worse).

I have a lot of other skills which are no longer relevant in modern society like using a map or getting my bearings very quickly when I'm in a new city.

          • +1

@kiriakoz: They were are a great part of growing up, and nice to have proper quality albums, and supported the artists. Still have them in boxes but ripped all to FLAC at the time. Good having them on hand still.

There wasn't much in the way of streaming back then. Bought my fair share but downloading were pretty popular too back then, vs streaming today.

    • Depends if you get lucky with the ones you pick. My 1998 unnumbered version of this regularly goes for over $900 on ebay, not bad for a $30 buy back in the day. Siamese dream orange marble vinyl not far off it either.

    • +3

It has 4 records and 2 books.

  • Great price, thanks OP

  • +1

Such a good album, depth and range is right…it's like a Rollercoaster

  • +2

The 4x box set has good reviews on discogs. Why they clearing this so cheap? (Cheap compared to maket price)

    • Box had been out of print for a number of years (bought my copy in 2014 when it was last pressed), so when the version for sale here was repressed in 2022 they made a ton to soak up the pent-up demand. Guessing they've been moving slowly the last 12 mths as vinyl prices have increased and people have held off buying.

      • +1

        Thanks for the info.
Tempted to buy two and keep one sealed. But then again, seems these box sets have been widely distributed.

  • Does anybody care that this is remastered? Ok if you've never heard this before but remasters always sounds off to me, anyway fantastic album but Billy is a grade A asshat, worst concert I've ever been to also, when Billy opens the show telling people to F off and play guitar hero if you want to listen to their good songs, then thrash a guitar to strobe lights for what seemed like an eternity, they were the suckiest sucks that ever sucked that day.

    • Shouldn't remasters be better, cleaner sound?
Nice if you get something extra for the price.
The original was probably fine though (and haven't heard the remaster).

      • Not always, often they change the sound for the worse buy overusing compression or making choices that don't fit the original intention.

This specific one seems good though.

      • @G-rig I have a 90s orange vinyl pressing of Siamese Dream and it sounds phenomenal. Folks who have a 2011 remastered Siamese Dream say that press sounds amazing. So while I don't have a 90s MCIS to compare I really can't see how much better any remastering would make this box set sound - the albums were recorded, mixed and mastered so well to begin with! And I don't think mastering has made any big leaps and bounds in 20 years, especially from 1990s sources.

    • +1

My age is showing, but I saw them at the first BDO in Auckland 1994. They absolutely rocked, in the mid afternoon mind you. Billy even said "Wow we're popular today", like it was a genuine surprise. The mosh pit was epic, even with the sun beating down lol. What can I say, Kiwis have good taste in music.

They've gone way down hill since this album though due to Billy climbing up his own arse. I guess they started so high it was bound to happen. Gish, SD, and this are still on my all time best album list, and the many b-sides etc. basically anything pre Adore.

  • +1

    Nice one OP.

Unfortunately for me I'm more of a fan of Siamese Dream, now if only a deal for that album would come up…

    • +1

Mate i'm eagerly awaiting a drop in price for that too 🤞

      • +1

Had my eye on it for a while, don't think i've seen it drop below $80 so not holding out much hope😐.

  • Thanks, bought the second last one - 1 left in stock now!

  • +1

Love the Pumpkins. I don’t understand the fascination with buying vinyl though. Especially when you can get this on a streaming service you have access to. Not very Ozbargain !

    • +1

It's just nostalgia and the cool factor, but it's nice to have something tangible sometimes. Mostly for audiophiles to justify a 2k LP transport.

Anyway you are correct, just checked Tidal, they have it a 24 bit / 96kHz FLAC, no crackles or pops either.

    • I don't get it either. Unless its an original pressing, I don't see the value. And in which case it would stay unplayed anyway, like my original pressings of Pixies albums.

      • I think it's just a collector's thing, once people buy a couple they can't stop.

There would be more value in getting house music singles at the time for DJs etc. it's a lot to spend for listening (and not many people have the attention span to listen to full albums these days (I do sometimes if they are decent).

Just don't leave them in the car lol.

    • Same. I tried collecting vinyl but gave up and sold them off. I was never a big fan of the format and prefer the crystal clear sound of digital. Not interested in the artwork either.

  • +1

Listen to music the way artists want with their work from start to finish! Enjoy the vinyls 👍

  • This arrived today and is an absolute cracker of a record (and a deal), so just wanted to thank the OP. Cheers
