Original Coupon Deal

Just picked one of these up, it doesn't come with the gucci-esk bag, but a Switch case that isn't form fitting should do.

Couldn't find it cheaper on Aliexpress. Note the coupon does seem to be applicable to all of the devices here, it shows $60 off, but remember $30 comes back due to GST.

Hope it's ok to be a duplicate/linked post to the main coupon.

    Anbernic RG556 Review: Almost Perfect
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFUu3MYQ7NI

Up to PS2/Gamecube at 1.5x resolution and some Switch games.

The poor man's Odin 2. Not bad. On the Wishlist for now.

What’s the current gold standard other than steam deck? I stopped obsessively watching news and reviews on handhelds after getting rg351mp and steam deck

  • So this or Odin 2?

    • +3

Well depends… do you want to spend 3 times the price? If so, get the Odin 2.

      RG556 $269.99 aud
      Odin 2 Base $299 + $22 4px = $321 (~$484 aud) about 1.8x more expensive
      Odin 2 Pro $369 + $22 4px = $391 (~$590 aud) about 2.2x more expensive

You can see the performance comparison with the T820 vs SD 8 Gen 2
      https://nanoreview.net/en/soc-compare/unisoc-t820-vs-qualcom…

The Odin 2 is a beast even with just the base model
Will be interesting to see the price and comparison with the Ayaneo Pocket S with its SD G3x Gen 2

      • Where's the best place to get the Odin?

        • +1

Best place is to buy direct from Ayn themselves as other places would charge a premium
Aliexpress is in the $750 ex gst for the Pro and nearly $900 something for the Max

      • That Pocket S looks dope AF. Probably min $1,000 AUD though. They are starting to blur the point between getting a dedicated handheld or slapping backbone onto a phone.

        • There has been word the base price would be somewhere around $450 USD given Ayaneo likes to price things at a premium

Alot of reviews talks about how good the screen and ergonomics are and even though they mention how the controls aren't too great, it gets brushed aside in their final recommendation which I find odd. What the point of having a great screen if you're not liking the controls?

If you value controls over screen, then I'd get the Odin 2 or find another device. The Odin 2 screen is good btw, it's just isn't OLED good.

      • Or if the budget doesn't stretch that far, the Retroid Pocket 4+ is an awesome piece of kit. It's run everything I've thrown at it (PS2, GC and Wii) at full speed, and usually beyond a 1x resolution.

        • I found the odin (and all these handhelds) really don't impress in the hands for more than 30-40 mins. I actually just prefer a really nice small tablet with a gamesir G8.

          • @JonnyCookieDough: It can be a bit rough with just the machine itself with the Retroid. I got a grip with it too - helps a lot.

          • @JonnyCookieDough: Gamesir G8 costs more (even 2x) than the cheaper hand helds

            • @Circly: Yeah agree. But money spent on stuff you put down or don't use is worse value than something comfortable in my opinion. And I like that I can keep the hardware modern as I need to or use it across devices. YMMV of course.

I want to buy this but still feel it's a little too pricy, at $200 it would be worth it.. diminishing returns beyond the rg35xx h
But if PS2, gamecube and vita are important than this is a good purchase.

  • Thanks for the deal OP.

I have a question - this is quite pricey compared to a switch lite. I have been looking to get a switch lite and came across this . But on the description, it says no games and the option for 128/256gb cards cost extra. Does that mean those cards are preloaded with games? And if I do not opt to buy those cards, how and what kind of games can I play on this product?

    • +5

The only kind of answer you will find here, will be and should be.. official backups of your games that you own.
The backups will be called roms and the Internet can help you find these roms.

Switch lite will play Switch games, this won't really play many, maybe 10-15% of the catalogue in the easier section.

Yes you can pay more and it'll include games, I would advise against it, the card quality is usually poor and they're prone to failure. All of the games can be found by asking google.

I'd instead get a 256/512gb microSD and that'll expand your total storage (starts at 128gb built in, excluding what the OS occupies).

    Great price.
I got this on preorder. The screen is awesome.

Plays most PS2 at 2x res
    Psp at 4x
    Wii/gc at mostly 2x
    3ds at mostly 2x
    Vita at 2x
    Android games
    Some switch indies at 1x
    And everything older perfectly

If I didn't ordered a cheaper smaller one last week (up to dreamcast) I would have got that one.
