        • Thanks thesmartone1125. Just got back from Chaddy OW as I saw there's 1 in stock but unfortunately it was on hold by someone. So I've placed my order (Ryzen 5) and most likely to get it by next Monday (from WH).

Great detail Yuri, def agree with all that you have mentioned. This thing is built solid! And if I was buying this laptop again I would def get the Ryzen 5 model as I only need this for general stuff and more so for a travel computer. Honestly for <$1000 I'd be surprised if there's anything that is this good.

    • Is there a significant benefit to doing a clean install vs just uninstalling the bloatware?

      • I'm paranoid and I like the feeling of starting fresh with a clean machine. Only takes an hour to do nowadays, just need to grab the drivers afterwards. Performance wise it probably doesn't matter too much.

        • I just uninstalled anything I wouldn't see if I were to build a PC myself and install the OS. Anything with Acer infront of its name - GONE.

I would honestly just uninstall the apps.

          • @thesmartone1125: Do you have any OLED care settings in Acer Sense? I just reinstalled Windows and installed the application on the support page but the settings are gone. Only an option for blue light filter.

            • @Yuri Lowell: Yes, following, I bought the laptop, reinstalled and do not see oled care settings sadly

              • @Niaq00: Fortunately the settings seem fairly generic and you can do them manually. Hide the taskbar, set a screensaver, make windows transparent, use a dark theme. I hope there was no hidden pixel shifting or refresh settings were missing out on.

            • @Yuri Lowell: Settings are there for me.

    • I got the 8645HS version, but saw that it tended to run a bit hotter than the temps you mention during all-core workloads. Which performance mode did you use?

      • What temps? I'm using balanced. Saw no performance difference on performance mode. I just ran a few rounds of Cinebench 23 on battery and the max temp was 63C.

  • Have you guys ever tried to do some basic editing on this rig?

Just wondering how it would hold up

I can get Davinci and try to export a 4k clip and see the render times, might just take me another day to do so.

      • Much appreciated

Remember save another $20 with OnePass. 4000 bonus points. In store only which sucks.

Got it in the end. First 5 minutes - IMPRESSED!

And for those wondering there are 4 OLED settings:

    Dark Mode
    Transparency Effect
    Acer Screen Saver Settings
    Auto Hide Task Bar

One issue I have found. When on your lap, it digs into your legs something fierce!!!

      • I noticed that too. It's the little rubber things on the edge of the lid.

  • +2

Not sure if it's a manufacturing defect but the screen I picked up is not perfectly flat, can notice distortion in the screen reflection when it's not on.
When the screen is on everything is fine.

    Normal for OLED

  • Two complete lockups today. Could be the charger I am using (apple), or the USB C dongle. More testing to be done.

    • No issues on mine.

      • Acer charger?

        • Yeah. I can test a Lenovo charger with less wattage. How long till yours locked up?

          • @Yuri Lowell: A few hours. Today it has also been fine with the same charger but a different USB hub.

  • Im using Dell P2419HC connecting to this laptop R5 via usb C for charging and display. However Dell monitor initially shows low resolution. After a couple of try, pulling and reconnecting, and then I get full HD. Anyone knows why?

  • Really liking this laptop. Amazing screen. Very solid design.

  • What would this be like for gaming eg terraria calamity? Anything better for the price or similar price?

    • +1

It does some gaming pretty well to be honest. Reckon most games would be playable but just have to wind back the res and quality.

Wreckfest I play at QHD and it looks amazing. Haven’t tried much else.

It won't have any problem running Terraria even at 2880x1800. The 8845HS version has a 780M which is the most powerful integrated graphics you can get. The next step up would be a dedicated GPU but even the 780M comes close to lower end dedicated GPUs. You could get a better gaming laptop for a similar price but you'll lose the OLED display, battery life, CPU performance, build quality, significantly increased weight. This laptop is pretty much as good as it gets for screen quality, CPU performance, integrated graphics.

      • 8845HS has the 760M.

        • The 8645HS has the 760M. I'm using the 8845HS and it says 780M.

  • Anyone found a USB C hub that works well with this. The only one I can get to even deliver power is an old DELL one. Even then it still says weak charging state. Apple ones don't charge at all and a new Orico also doesn't charge (it did work with a 87w apple charger though). Frustrating.

  • One weird but slightly annoying thing. The fans go loud when the screen is off in lock mode, connected to two external monitors. Something is kicking them off.

    • Try updating your graphics drivers, seems to sometimes fix the fans going off randomly

      • Doing it now.. For some reason the Adrenaline software didn't auto update. Fingers crossed.

Also noticed that a lot of drivers may need to be AND the bios was out of date. Acer software didn't detect it had updates.

        • Damn no change. Updated graphics and BIOS. Disliking the fans in this.

          • @boxall: Is one of your monitors high refresh and free sync? Possibly disabling free sync may help. It can force AMD hardware to run at high clocks even idle which would make the fans spin up.

            • @Yuri Lowell: Will try. Main monitor is 75Hz so not very high.
I put Acersense into quiet mode and all is ok. Something is triggering it for sure.

            • @Yuri Lowell: No FreeSync support on the monitors.

  • Came home. On the screen (hope no burn in). “No bootable device found”. Agggggghh. Creating a win 11 rescue disk now.

    • What happened? Hopefully not hardware issue.

      • Booted off USB. SSD is there and completely blank. No partitions at all. No idea what happened.

Hopefully replacing it tomorrow as I don’t trust it at all and I don’t won’t to do a full rebuild.

        • Return to OW? Wonder what they'll replace it with.

        • Got it replaced. Fingers crossed it hangs in there.

Was going to go the Mini PC route again.

          • @boxall: Did Officeworks exchange it for you? Picked this up ~3 weeks ago and this morning it will only turn on the keyboard backlight and fans. Nothing on the screen and never connects to the wifi, despite numerous hard resets.

            • @Arsenal: Yep. Swapped on the spot (return and rebuy) and now refunded.

              • @boxall: Annoyingly by the time I got it back to Officeworks (which was a circus as some poor woman got stabbed in the parking lot yesterday) it then started up as if there was nothing wrong.. despite it even not having worked after using the battery disconnect pinhole on the back per the manual this morning.

I hope this doesn't end up being an intermittent issue, otherwise I really will be done with Acer for good… to be honest it was only the positive comments in this thread that even made me consider it again after years of mistrust.

  • Does this have the metal chassis like the 13500 model?

  • Decided not to open the replacement and will return. Will be getting this for $300 less:

    Other thoughts:

    • OLED was lovely x10000, but I was paranoid about burn in.
    • The corruption of the HD worried me
    • Inconsistent wifi coming out of standby. Took ages to connect.
    • Use case is on a desk with a couple of screens, so laptop is overkill when it never moves.
    • Fan inconsistency was weird - when screen was off it was super loud. Ran it in quiet mode most of the time.
    • Super uncomfortable on my lap. Just dug in.
    • Quality build for sure was A+++
    • Will miss USB C charging. But as it sits on the desk, maybe not too much.
