Who wants to install apps on an external drive? And take up one of the two external ports?
And yeah storage is cheap — hence why it's so frustrating that this $1500 laptop only has 256GB of non-user replaceable storage.
I mean… Anyone buying Apple knows that it's by design at this point.
If you need more than 256gb for apps than Mac Air should not even be in your consideration. They are pricing the storage for max profit but it's not a deal breaker in anyway. I mean USB ports are designed for portable storage anyways….

16gb makes this a very usable machine. The storage space is a bit low but you have the option of taking a port up for more storage down the track, paying around $1800ish upfront for more like others said, or planning for a more online kind of usage where most of your stuff is in the cloud anyway.
Yeah agreed. Probably better idea to pay the ~$80/year for office 365 family when it's on sale and that'll get you 1TB for your entire family + word/excel/etc.
Linus Torvalds uses his M2 Air with 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD to patch and compile Linux kernels. If he can do that with this setup, it’s more than enough for most people.
