5-star Japan Airlines is the flag carrier of Japan, and they don't have sales that often. However, this price, flying direct, is great from them. They're a Oneworld carrier, and all the ones I've checked below fly into Haneda (much closer airport to city), and allow 2x23kg bags.

I've flown them direct from Sydney before and it was one of the nicest economy class flights of my life.

A lot of the dates will also show slightly cheaper ANA flights (note the ANA post deal), and sometimes Qantas flights.

      Well it depends on whether you want to spend an extra $2k to make 9 hours or so more comfortable.

      For me it's a complete waste of money I'd rather spend on better hotels or experiences, but up the individual.

      Can see it being more important for a 20+ hour flight but seems wasteful if you can't deal with a normal seat for a few hours.

      I don't think business class needed for this flight. I've flown JAL and ANA economy and I find them one of the best I've flown for that class. Have also flown ANA in Business. The bigger seat was nice but the food among both classes is pretty good.

      P.S. I do miss the JAL 747 where economy got you on the upper deck seats as well. It was premium economy before that was ever a term. Quieter and great service overall.

    JAL is an excellent airline and the 2-4-2 seat configuration on the 777s is thoroughly worth the price premium.

    Just flew with JAL economy return and can confirm its one of the best economy flights I have ever taken. And the drinks on boards are great, one of the better selections I have come across.

    JAL is very good but I'm considering ANA for next trip because the return flight is day time. JAL only do overnight return.

      I guess it's very specific to your preferences and itinerary, but I always feel a small sense of waste with ANA. Staying the last night close to the airport, rushing to Haneda in the morning, and then spending the whole day on the plane feels like a bit of a downer.

      With the JAL overnighter you can wake up on the last day nowhere near Tokyo, Shink and shuttle to Narita doing some stuff along the way, and then collapse exhausted in your seat ready to sleep all the way home. To me it has less of the end of trip melancholy.

    I've been trying to book flights from Melbourne around September with JAL directly for the past few days but their website has been failing. Every flight I choose, after filling in my details, it gives an error saying the flight is actually full.

    I've always booked flights directly with them before. Is there much added risk going through a third party? Assuming just direct flights, no connections, etc.

      I’ve booked through third party websites many times before with no issues but that’s because once I’ve booked I’m set on those particular dates and don’t change anything, if you try to change or cancel it’s definitely a hassle with lots of extra fees

    It's times like this when it sucks to live in Adelaide. Been thinking to visit Japan soon, and all these Japan Airlines and ANA deals are from Sydney. Is it worth to fly to Sydney and take advantage of these deals, or is it too risky, with all the flight cancellations/delays these days?

      If you can source one way flights for roughly $100 to get you to Sydney and back, $1250ish is still a good price for a return flight to Tokyo with JAL.

      As for cancellations and delays, gotta roll that dice.

          There's often a way to get a free/cheap QF connecting flight to Sydney from Mel, Syd, Bne or Hob. I've got it before from MEL to SYD to catch a JL flight. It was booked on the JL ticket so was a protected connection at their risk, not mine.

          What month would you go?

    The JAL website includes a connecting flight from Adelaide the prior evening, you just have to stay overnight in Sydney at your own expense.

    I can see the $1,081 sale fares class O available for SYD departures 21 May to 14 June (excluding the 24th of May) assuming duration of 14-21 days.

    So, I searched this:
    ADL to HND
    departing 21 May
    returning 5 June
    $1,181
    (plus cost of 1 hotel night in Sydney)

    You could do it, but check that the weather is not too humid the closer to mid year that you go. Personally I prefer the autumn colours in late October early November.

        No but I can see discounted dates 3,4,5,6,8,11,12,13 September for between 14 and 21 days.
        October 9 returning 23rd also.
        For Adelaide bring the departure date forward 1 day for your connections.

      Another JAL website tip for non-Sydney people:

      Press the 'More flights' button at the bottom of the page for more creative sometimes cheaper routings.

      The multi-city search for connecting flights via Sydney is another way to get more flexibility and sometimes cheaper fares.

      The seat maps button, also at the bottom of the search results page, shows you what seats will be available to select.

      I personally thought Shibuya was a touch overrated. But honestly, if its your first time in japan, youll probably just enjoy everything. Everyone keeps to themself and are pretty polite, if not a touch reserved. Youll also notice how ridiculously clean it is. When I came back to Aus i was like "wow… this place is filthy"

      First timer:
      1. Shinjuku station
      2. Japanese Dept store and their fruit section
      3. Mt Fuji (there are 14 to choose from)
      4. Walk around: Ginza, Akihabara (electronic nerd central or used to be at least).
      5. Take a bullet train to Kyoto or Osaka for a day trip and go to a palace (historical).
      6. Food: Try their 7-elevens as they're way different, Bento boxes, mom-pop restaurants (hole in the wall), point at plastic food to say that's what you want.

      If you've got some time, Rail pass and criss-cross the country by train. Depending on season you could also get some amazing snow in the Winter time or autumn leaves as well.

      Japan always has something to do (been 6 times and still want to go back).

        As an example, I compared Sydney's 11 Nov to 9 Dec and put in Melbourne 11 Nov to 8 Dec (due to less JAL flights to Melb) - showed up as $1267 return (both direct, although JAL flies from Melbourne to Narita, not Haneda (further away from Tokyo, so potentially factor in higher transport costs).

        in general, its much more expensive from Melbourne, especially business class. ANA can get 4500 return Sydney to Tokyo, but dont fly from Melb; JAP and Qantas are usually about 2k more. I would prefer to fly economy, but I can't find a day time return flight and overnight flights mess my sleep up for at least a week after I return. Unfortunately; I don't have the leave to take the extra time off after my trip.

    Any couples done a 3-week or so trip to Japan and have approximate total cost after all was said and done?

    My fiancée and I are thinking of going for our honeymoon, likely late Oct departure, mid Nov return. These flights seem like a good deal.

    First time going, so thinking we would want to do the standard Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto/Nara stops (not in that order, not sure what the best itinerary would be logistically speaking), probably a ryokan stop somewhere along the way, maybe Hiroshima too.

      The really good exchange rate (Google has exchange rates at highs of A$1 to 100 yen for the first time even taking account fluctations in the rate), food being pretty cheap, and only needing 1 room for accommodations between the two of you, your money will go pretty far even if you don't wanna spend heaps. However, Oct/Nov are quite good months to travel, and no doubt many others have had the same thoughts (myself included), so there'll be quite a number of places already booked out (especially ryokans in popular tourist locations like Hakone) or have had their rates hiked up (e.g. Dormy Inn prices aren't nearly as cheap as they were same time last year).

      Would say go for it, but yeah, you should probably start looking into accommodation sooner than later.

      Just came back from 4 weeks in Japan, doing the above mentioned cities plus a week in Sapporo + skiing in Niseko as well as 3D2N in Lake Kawaguchiko. We bought a LOT of souvenirs back and total was about $16k for 2 people. Also travelled in Mar/Apr where accommodation prices are steeper so take that into consideration. Hope that helps.

      Monday, Wednesday, Saturday based off a quick random look at a week in late October, and presumably Sunday, Tuesday and Friday going the other way (given overnight flight on the way back).

    I paid 93,000 points + 350$ to fly qantas economy to Tokyo and Jetstar ‘business’ return from Osaka. I’m in Melbourne, May dates.

    Did I overpay compared to this deal?

      I'm gonna lean towards overpay, but its hard to tell as it isn't apples to apples.

      Taking an estimate and factoring in a return MEL-SYD flight (~$400), some notepad maths would have you pricing your points at: (1050+400 - 350tax) / 93000pts = approximately 1.1c/pt. Sites like PointHacks value QFF points at around 1.9c/pt, leading me to believe that it's not optimal value. But your itinerary is a little more unique as these flights depart from SYD vs MEL, and your itinerary is departing KIX vs HND for your flight home… Jetstar's 'business' seats might be a little more comfy than JAL's economy but they do have the best Y as far as 787s go. Combined with superior service + food, JAL definitely would be one of my choices to fly to Japan.

      That being said I've booked reward flights to LAX with suboptimal value as I've seen my dates go on sale before, so I wouldn't think too much into the deals you see 1 month out from your trip - go enjoy it!

        It’s very annoying because I brought well ahead, on a red sale, and using rewards seats. How much more do I need to do to get a good deal?

        As an aside, I’ve seen that figure on pointshacks but I’m not sure how they really come to it. I’ve only ever really been able to get 1c/point or slightly higher.

        I am saving a couple of hundred bucks not getting the train back to Tokyo, so I should factor that in.

          I think they look at typical cash prices disregarding sales to arrive at a valuation, business fares have be. But again, it's not really a fair test to price QFF points for a JAL economy flight vs QF economy + JQ business, it gets complicated quickly lol.

          Seeing as KIX-MEL tickets flying JQ business run for 80k pts + 20,000JPY from a quick search, your ticket seems to be pretty good value - the valuation of that would definitely exceed 1.9c/pt.

          These flights to Japan recently have been extremely good value paying in cash - I actually refrained from using QFF pts for my trip in May to fly with ANA, so depending on destination just browse how cheap tickets can go before seeking a redemption :)

            @urngdawgs: I think the big difference is actually the Melbourne aspect. I can’t get a JAL flight for under $1800-2000 around my dates (which are included in this sale), and they all involve huge layovers in Sydney that double my travel time each way. If you use that as the figure, then my qantas points definitely earned their keep, both in terms of actual value and far better flights.

            Yeah I thought the Jetstar upgrade was a good one, even though I’m a bit disappointed to have found out after that it’s not a serious business class. For 30k points I get food and drinks, which would probably add to up to $100 plus alone. A comfy seat and not being in the huge economy Jetstar cabin sealed the deal 🤣

              @Jigram: Time is one of the biggest deciding factors when I book for flights, so if any alternatives including this JAL option significantly increases your travel time, this Qantas + Jetstar combo is definitely worth it.

              That being said though Jetstar economy wasn't awful in terms of seat comfort (Scoot is by far the worst), but after doing the SYD-OOL-NRT journey in Oct '22 during the peak of Jetstar's 787 trouble… I just don't want to be risking my time and sanity again like that. Hopefully all goes well for your trip mate

          Also remember that reward ticket is somewhat equivalent to "flex" fare, not sale fare, you can cancel with minimal cost if needed (change might be hard since availability is not good though).

    Booked my tickets via JAL's web page one day before this deal was posted for a trip in October/November 2024. (I noticed the prices for the flights I wanted dropped by over $100).

    I'm so happy not to be flying with extended stop overs (From Tasmania) waiting for the next Jetstar flight. Also super happy not to be forced to listed to the music (Trumpet song) Jetstar play pre and post flight. That's worth paying extra just to avoid also.
