Does Cathay offer a free stop over in HK by any chance?

    • +1

+1 would love to do both countries in one trip.

    • +1

If there is free stop over is there a way to extend the stopover to more than a day? Always wondered how you would book flights with longer stopover…would that usually be done by having to just buy individual tickets?

      • Multi stop ticket or Multi city ticket. This let's you add a stopover if your choice and keeping your pnr as one

      • use the multi city option
e.g SYD-HND, KIX-HKG, HKG-SYD or whatever cities you choose to fly in and out of

        • Can't find this option, is it not always available?

          • +1

@browser: it is always available. In the cathay website search flight you click "Muti-City". It is located in the flight search box top right corner. I just booked.

            20/12 SYD-HKG
            6/1 HKG-KIX (Osaka Japan)
            12/1 KIX-HKG
            1/2 HKG-SYD

AUD $4,620.88 for family of 4 (2A2C) on CX. Very cheap as Christmas period SYD-HKG return will be $17xx, now adding Japan and bring down to $12xx adult.

    • According to my understanding, CX offers free stopover at HK which I tried before.

    • no

  • EDIT: Working now

By far a better airline thatn Jetstar, but for me I dont think the 14 hour min flight vs 9 hour direct is worth it.

    • -1

I think it’s a heap better when we booked , baggage included, so is food, entertainment, more legroom and (when we booked) was about half Jetstars price.

  • Yep, that’s what we paid a few weeks ago from Brisbane . Much better than Jetstar prices as well as baggage and food and legroom included. 1.5hour at Hong Kong airport is a good little break from the flight.

There was a code for another $88off as a CNY special.

    • Doesn't compare (price wise) to the recent return for free Jetstar prices though. My family of 4 got tickets for $2100 including 2 20kg bags (total). This deal would be about $3200+ but granted you're getting a much better service and comfort.

      • True. We got 3 fares with7kg plus 23kg. Cathay was a heap cheaper than jetstar at the time.
Comfort is a plus as well with the extra legroom standard.
We'll see how it goes as i havent flown with them before.

        • Enjoy, I know which airline I'd rather be flying with lol (Cathay!). Even at such a bargain price, you can't beat comfort!

  • +2

No Perth couldn't be more annoying

    • +2

I too share this sentiment. Cathay fly from Perth to HK, why exclude us?

  • Any business deals?

  • Is there any option to stay in HK for 3-5 before going to Osaka OP?

  • +6

If you're considering spending any time in Osaka or nearby, check the accommodation availability and prices before booking your flight.

Osaka is the host city for World Expo 2025, I wouldn't be surprised if accommodation is less available and/or more expensive in Osaka and nearby cities (Kobe, Kyoto, Nara) because of the Expo.

    • +1

      thanks for the info

  • To do Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, is it better to arrive Tokyo or Osaka?

Also planning to stop for a few days at Hong Kong, will see if multi city option works.

    • +2

One difference is how long it will take you to get from the airport to your hotel. Osaka airport and both Tokyo airports have train stations at the airport, but the travel times are different. When you've been on a plane for 16-24 hours, a shorter train trip is nicer.

Tokyo's Haneda airport is closer to Shinjuku, which is often where first-time Australian tourists stay. Allow 35-50 minutes train travel time.

Tokyo's Narita airport is further away, allow 70-90 minutes travel time.

Osaka's Kansai International airport to Osaka station is 55-70 minutes.

Of course, it depends on where your hotel is, and what time of day you're arriving, and whether you are willing to pay for the more expensive trains (e.g. NRT to Tokyo costs between 1050JPY and 3000JPY, for the same journey, using different railway companies).

Google Maps will tell you the price and duration of the train trip, and whether you have to change trains part-way through, e.g. Google Maps

You can put your hotel name as the destination, and Google will usually be able to figure out the nearest train station.

Also, taking the train to depart via Osaka's airport can be confusing. The train I caught in Nov 2024 split into two trains a few stops short of the airport, you have to listen carefully to the announcements (multilingual in Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean I think) while onboard the train, to know which half of the train goes to the airport. In my case it was carriages 1-4, but YMMV.

      • Thanks, I have been wanting to visit Japan for a long time, but planning is putting it off.

      • +1

        There's Airport Limousine Buses.

I'd catch those because some hotels are actual stops. Could catch a limousine bus to the nearest hotel stop, and then walk from there or taxi if need be.

        • There's Airport Limousine Buses.

Yes, but they're more expensive, and no faster. The buses show in the Google maps link I listed above.

However, going by train almost always involves changing from one train to another, and that's worth considering, as changing trains can be quite confusing until you've done it a few times.

For example, using the link I listed above, and choosing the cheapest option at 1160JPY. This requires changing trains at Shin-Imamiya Station, and it's 170m between the platforms, and google gives you 8 minutes to cover that distance. Which is achievable if you're familiar with the layout of the station and are adept at following signs (which are in English).

But Google's route has several sets of stairs, which are difficult if you have anything more than carry-on luggage. There are almost always lifts and elevators available, but you'll have to locate them, and you'll probably miss the train you were intending to catch. Usually there will be another train on the same route some 4-10 minutes later, but sometimes that train is express for some sections, and may not stop at your station.

While trains are very convenient in Osaka and Tokyo, it can be quite challenging at times to use them. Google maps helps quite a lot, but regularly doesn't give enough time for you to change trains.

          or taxi if need be.

Also be aware that Japan is renowned for having the most expensive taxis in the world. For example, about 300AUD if you want to go entirely by taxi from Narita Airport to Tokyo:
          https://www.narita-airport.jp/en/access/taxi/

I didn't try short journeys by taxi, but I'd expect them to still be expensive.

          • @Russ: I still remember flying into NRT in December 2023 and was forced to catch the bus because the Narita Express line was down for 2 hours. Didn't want to catch the Keisei because I had to transfer to get to Tokyo station, which was close to my accommodation.

Had two options, the airport limo and the cheaper airport bus (1100 yen from memory). Enjoyed the slower pace of bus after a long trip. If it was HND it was going to be go go go.

And interesting point you make about Shin-Imamiya station. From memory there are no elevators for the JR station as I remember people struggling to get their luggage up to the station from ground level. With buses, you take that out of the equation unless you needed to go underground after that.

But I totally agree on the use of trains if you're needing to be somewhere at a specific time without the worry about going through traffic.

            • @quackie:

From memory there are no elevators for the JR station

I'm pretty sure every station has lifts, in order to be wheelchair accessible. Here's the 3D map for Shin-Imamiya station, the red dotted lines show the wheelchair-accessible routes:
              https://qrtranslator.com/0000005728/000013

That map gets you to street level. From the street, there is a separate lift to the platforms of the JR station. The lift is just visible on the left at 1:18 in this video, the person filming walks past it: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MrS3ltv683M

So it wouldn't be easy if you can't lug a heavy suitcase up and/or down stairs, but it is possible.

I just wish google would add a flag to google maps, for "wheelchair-accessible paths only", so people with suitcases can use them too. There are a LOT of stairs in Japan, it's probably how Japanese people stay fit!

              • @Russ: Ah, it was bloody hard to look for one. I was lucky as I was going to Shinsekai from JR Shin-Imamiya station to start my walk back to Dotonbori, saw many people struggling with suitcases going up the stairs from ground level.

I missed your last comment on taxis. Took a 15 min ride from Tokyo Station to Nihonbashi as I didn't want to bother with crowded trains on the 31st of December. 1400 yen.I have to admit that I will happily pay for convenience.

                • @quackie:

                  1400 yen

Ouch, for a walking distance of less than a kilometre. Why did it take 15 minutes, was there traffic congestion, or detours?

Still, if it's pouring rain, or stinky hot or lots of luggage to drag, I'd probably spend that money too.

                  • +1

@Russ: It was 2.5kms door to door as it was on the other side of Nihonbashi. https://maps.app.goo.gl/PyeYm41NsCMaSDUy5

Granted that area is very flat so it's not that hard to walk, but I had just come back from Toyama and Nagano where I was averaging 22k steps/day. I could not be bothered to keep walking with luggage :)

                    • @quackie: Ah, apologies, I looked up "Nihonbashi" in Google Maps and in Wikipedia, and both showed me a much smaller area.

It looks like Nihonbashi is both an area and a district, same as how "Brisbane" can refer to the suburb of Brisbane or the entire city.

Still a slow journey though. Google says 7-22 minutes for the 2.6-kilometre journey during the daytime, which equates to an average speed between 22 and 7 kph respectively! (A bit of a numerical fluke there, I had to double-check my working).

      • We prefer to fly into Narita. Our son lives at Matsudo so the train ride is quite short.

AUD $4,620.88 for family of 4 (2A2C) on CX. Very cheap as Christmas period SYD-HKG return will be $17xx, now adding Japan and bring down to $12xx adult.

    • Did you book with CX directly or through referral from IWTF?

  • weird that the mel-tyo flights in nov/dec on @IWantThatFlight website are ~$800 but on cathay website direct still $1000+

where as mel-osaka flights on same date are $800 return on cathay site.
