    I have 16 of these.
Over 2 years I’ve had 5 fail (no power pass through on failure).
If you use these on a fridge/freezer just be cautious and check regularly they are working.

I’ve since stopped using them as it was too annoying when then failed.

    • +1

Wow that is very odd, I've had no issues at all with mine and I've got quite a lot. Did you reach out to support via Amazon? I had a query with a different unit and they swapped it out no questions asked.

      • Mine are the mss310.
Support was ok to replace the first one, but wasn’t worth it to ship it back.
        Didn’t bother with the others.

        • Ok that's good, glad to hear you were able to get it swapped easily. I've found via Amazon they're quite good.

    • +2

Could be because a classic fridge is an inductive load. If it switches off at just the wrong time it could kill the switch/relay inside.

      • +1

Had 1 fail on a freezer. 1 on the TV, 1 on NBN Router 1 on Lamp and last 1 on coffee machine.

    • I've had two die recently - I have a theory they don't like excessive heat (we've had a hot summer in Perth)

      • I'd previously thought the death of these devices was related to being corrected to high wattage appliances. I've had a great run with 4 of these running garden lights over 4-5 years, concerned to see the comment about about a failure when connected to a router/lamp, but I've had a flawless experience for many years.

        • That was my initial thought (one was on a power board) but the other was just for my stick vac charger

    • +4

      I've had 3 of 4 fail.

    • +1

I posted this comment below which might help explain:

I just reached out to meross on Amazon asking if they'd heard of this. They told me that apparently it was due to a capacitor in the unit failing prematurely. They replaced their supplier at the end of last year (although their might be some lead time for stock) so their newest shipped units should hopefully have the problem resolved. I can't say for sure though as my units are from 2022.

I'd reach out to them on Amazon and try and get them swapped out. You should be able to get them swapped, potentially >=2 years too as Amazon is good with that.

      • +5

        Can confirm the above.
        I had 2 of 4 fail.
Destructive inspection showed a faulty capacitor.

Didn't bother with warranty due to low cost and explaining my destructive inspection.

NOTE: I enjoy destructive inspections :)

    • +5

To add another datapoint, I've had 2 out of 4 fail. They both go into constant clicking mode turning on/off whilst flashing yellow/green. Be careful with what appliances you hook this up to, I suspect some may not tolerate the rapid power cycles.

      • +2

Yeah most of my old Kogan ones did this and due to faulty/worn out relay switch inside I believe. I'd rather they just died rather than flicking as that is really bad.

      • +3

Interesting, sounds like a similar failure mode to the TP-Link Kasa and Tapo energy monitoring smart plugs (KP115 and P110) which a number of users have complained about on OzB, — I wonder if they all used the same capacitor supplier.

    • I have been in the same boat, 3 out of 6 failed, all replaced without asking any further questions.

  • Is energy monitoring live? Or does it just give you a daily summary ?

I want to measure live power draw on a coffee machine..

    • +2

It gives you both, also gives you weekly, monthly and yearly figures.

      • But no on demand hey?
Trying to determine power draw and when does it reach advertised max wattage

        • +2

I’m not sure what you mean, it gives live values if that’s what you mean?

            @JSONBourne: Perfect! Thank you!

            • +2

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Don't buy I had 4 last year and 3 died this year

I reckon they make them to fail just after warranty

              • @Poor Ass: wow…that's no good, was also wanting to automate charging my ryboi 9ah batteries, remote restart my modem/routers etc… not ideal if the failure rate is that high especially when i want to use them in some pretty remote locations.

                • +2

@Jimothy Wongingtons: I have x11 running 24/7 for over 2 years and all no failures…touch wood it remains that way. I have my Fridge on one and of course worried of failure. As a precaution and as I use HomeAssistant, it notifies me if any become: unavailable, are turned off or drop below XX watts.

                  • @Borg:

it notifies me if any become: unavailable

thats handy! i probably wouldn't be game to go higher risk like fridge.
i used to have a brilliant brand one to automate some path lighting but it would just constantly go offline and never come back on without a full power cycle, reset and re-add to cloud… so now just suss on these types of products haha

                    • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Fridge isn't too risky for me as I have little MiTemps in the fridge and another in the freezer. HASS notifies me if the temp is above XX for longer than 30mins etc so I would know if something wasn't right :-).

                      • @Borg: That’s awesome!

                      • @Borg:

                        as I have little MiTemps

I love these things but I found they were all chewing battery like there was no tomorrow. I installed dedicated Aqara units but they're more expensive overall.

                        • @JSONBourne: I've logged each battery change. All have lasted over +/-12mths. The freezer one less (8months) but I swap it into a different device as once back to room temp has a good 30% left.

                  • @Borg: So long as you don't put one on your HA server…

                    • @dontpanic: Ha……indeed it is :-)
It's one of several VMs on my ESXi PC and have thought about this.
My Solution: The PC is plugged into a APC backup battery which is plugged into the Meross plug. This way I can stilll monitor power consumption and if it fails have 10mins to plug APC directly into wall……or just let it power down if not around!

                • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: They'll probably be good for 1 year but I can't see it lasting more than 2-3years

                  happy to be proven wrong

                  for me

                  1. plugged in for charging a stick vac not really high drain stuff but failed
                  2. plugged in for family fridge but stopped working after a year. when you try to use it again it will make this donk noise and turns itself off
                  3. plugged in for a second fridge this has kept working but for some reason the reception is poor and at times when I try to monitor it remotely using the app it doesn't connect but visibly it is on
                  4. I actually don't know where I put this but maybe it works?
  • +3

Looks like a single one will block two power points?

    • +1

      Yep they are chonkers

      • +2

Really really annoying. Would not recommend them unless its a single socket or you dont care.
Use the Tuya ones for less money and less space, they monitor energy too.

        • Not ideal but I use these (example only) Slimline Double Adaptors in some locations. One can buy Left and Right ones for a few dollars each.

    • Short extension leads are super-handy, come in white/black and pack sizes 4/6/8

  • Is there a way to stop them from being accessible over the internet, for example I can turn these on/off while on LTE, but is there a way for them to be accessible just over wifi (my home network)

    • +1

If you buy the Homekit version then you can access them while away and have them internet blocked. All traffic is routed via a Homepod/Apple TV and the devices are local only.

      • I do have the homekit version, but don't have a homepod, I was hoping it'd be a function through the app or if there was a way I can do it via my router

        • If you get a HomePod then you can use it via HomeKit. This means you can block the internet on the plug but still use it while out of the house.

Otherwise you can also use them in LAN only mode but your phone needs to be on the same network if you do it via Meross and not HomeKit.

          • @JSONBourne: Are there any instructions on how I could put it in LAN only mode. Does it still require a homepod?

            • @akay0402: LAN only mode means blocking the plug at the router, which depends on your router.

If you are happy to use it while your phone is on Wifi, no Homepod needed. Everything goes via Meross app.

If you want to operate the plug while internet blocked, but away from your house, you need a Homepod and to go via Homekit.

    • +1

There's also the route of assigning them static IPs then setting up firewall rules to block them from internet access.

  • +1

I've been running one of these for about 6 months outside daily switching a 2kw resistive hot water element. I have it shielded from the rain with some tape. Hasn't missed a beat.

  • Does anyone know if it’s worth using these for outdoor fridge?

Ie. turn it off at night and back on in the morning.

    • +1

It supports scheduling, so you could definitely use it that way. I'd just pick up a cheap outdoor electrical box from Bunnings to make sure it's waterproofed/out of UV if it's located somewhere exposed.

      • Thanks, just curious if it’s worth turning it off at night, or it maybe be bad for the fridge, or not really saving much power.

        • Do you keep anything perishable in the fridge, or just some random drinks? If perishable, you definitely want to keep it powered all the time.

  • +1

I’ve had two of the non power monitoring HomeKit versions fail. Both failed by suddenly switching the load on and off repetitively every 2 seconds. Would not factory reset or reconnect. We’re 3 months out of warranty. I have quite a few power monitoring HomeKit versions and all these are working fine still. Avoiding buying any non power monitoring versions now in case it’s a design issue with them.

    • +1

What is it with these plugs failing in the worse possible way! Was thinking of buying Meross after my TP-Link KP115s failed this way, but guess they can run into the same issue….

      • +1

I would absolutely love to have smart plugs in every outlet in my house, especially with energy monitoring, but literally every single smart plug out there that I've seen that's AU rated has tons of people saying that they fail in this same way. I don't understand why it's such a common issue for every single smart plug out there! It's insanely odd!

        • I've used a bunch of different brands and had this issue. Some work perfectly, some fail. I just try to buy them cheap and from a reputable seller. Return if possible, but if not, the cost doesn't sting too much. Bought the Crest branded ones from BigW last year for $7.50 - one died, but the others are going strong.

    • I had the same problem - potentially harmful to the connected appliance

  • can i put thse on for an iron etc- so it will automatically turn off after e,g 10min if not in use ?

    • Yep their is an auto-off feature in the Meross App. I use it when turning on a fan before I go to bed. Works great!

  • Is there a way to trigger notifications and/or automations based on energy usage? For example, to let me know when the dishwasher finishes if I’m outside of audible beep range.

    • You can do this with the Homekit version from memory (you might need HomeAssistant though). A lot of people do the dishwasher/washing machine use-case and it works well.

  • +1

Using two of these for lamps around the house. Both set to come on at sunset and turn off just before bed. Also configured with Alexa around the house for voice commands switching on and off, works great.

  • How do these compare to the Philips Hue version?

  • +1

Last year bought 4 and 3 have died earlier this year

Annoying thing is if it is place in hard to reach area like back of fridge you need to take the fridge out in order disconnect and turn back on

  • I have a few of these, they trigger fine and can integrate with home assistant. But it would cause a surge in circuitry which would trip the circuit breaker.
ymmv but after switching to another brand it doesn't do it since I changed them out.

    • +1

      that's strange

usually it's the combined appliances / overload that would trip your breaker and I don't see how the energy monitor would make your circuit surge

what were you using it for?

      • maybe if they turned on a bunch of stuff at once?

        • +1

we won't know unless they say but I doubt it's the energy monitor and more the appliances

  • +1

The comments match up with some reviews. Won't be touching these.

  • +1

bacon breakfast and scramble into work

OP this is verging on Pilkington-level poetry, nice one

  • Can anyone recommend any good ones?

  • Seems the TP-Link P110 would be more reliable at roughly the same price (when on special)? Anyone used both and able to comment on longevity?

  • +1

I bought two TP-Link HS100's back in 2017. One died last year or the year before, other is still going. Would buy again.

  • I had four of these but returned them. It was ok, but I just prefer Zigbee, Im just doing a whole ZigBee setup now (where I can)

  • Any non-smart ones? I don't want to have to download another app.

    • Yep there's this one, no app required, not smart. Only in a 4-port power board format though

      https://www.bunnings.com.au/click-white-4-outlet-switched-po…

      • I thought it was obvious, but I'm looking for one that monitors power…

        • +1

It needs some smarts to monitor power. Are you asking about non IOT devices that you walk over to view power used like These?

    • Look for a Power-Mate Lite, the gold standard for consumer grade energy monitoring. It's old-school, just an LCD screen and no app, but very accurate is able to measure much lower standby power draws (i.e. < 0.2W) than most of the smart plugs (which usually read 0W at that point).

      • @$140+ they would want to be. I think for general households and getting an approx idea of energy costs, the cheapies are accurate enough.

  • I had a couple of these that only used for Christmas lights, so limited usage over Summer only. Both failed, was out of warranty period because didnt know till I tried to use them again in December.

    • +1

I just reached out to meross on Amazon asking if they'd heard of this. They told me that apparently it was due to a capacitor in the unit failing prematurely. Thanks for the feedback, have already binned them when Meross would not honour warranty (was 1 month out of warranty)

  • Is there a limit to no of units you can link to via the app? I read someone has 6? TIA.
