I simply wouldn't think about buying points unless I had a specific use for it in the very near future and could work out that it was good value for that use. Otherwise there's just too many conditions/restrictions attached to using points including the number of seats available on each flight etc.
The value of the points is different depending on how you use it. Much easier to just use cash, even if it's a little bit more. because you will almost always get a seat..
This, if you're looking at Business Class flights for example, and there's awards availability, and buying the points (and taking into account taxtes) works out cheaper… why not?
But I wouldn't be buying points just to sit on them. Frequent flyer points are constantly devalued - whether VA, QF, SQ, or others.

Make sure you use a international fee-free card if buying this (or anything from points.com), even though price is in $AUD. I got stung previously.
