  • Looks targeted, can't see it in the app.

Can you use the tech one to purchase Apple gift cards ?

    • Should be fine.

    • +1

If not purchase a Woolworths card and then can purchase Apple Card’s in store at Woolworths

      • If I remembered correctly, you can't purchase a gift card with gift card at Woolies.

        • +2

That's true but the Woolworths card from Special is more like an MCC restricted MasterCard. I can definitely confirm that you could use it to buy a gift card in store. I did it recently.

        • I did this morning. At the self service check out you select card as it’s effectively the same as paying with a debit card.

  • Does anyone know if the "Fine Foodie" card can be used at kfc, hungry jacks, ubereats, doordash etc?

The website says "The Fine Foodie Card can be used at every restaurant, whether it’s 5-stars or drive-thru Australia-wide."

But when I search through the list of retailers for kfc, hungry jacks, ubereats, doordash, I don't get any results…

Just wondering if anyone has tried it before?

    • +4

Buy the Woolworths card from special instead, then go to Woolworths and buy a Restaurant Choice gift card using it, for a further 10% off.

      • What you all do with Restaurant Choice small balance? How to spend it since most of the restaurants these days not allow split payment :(

  • +2

I guess no more Amazon or Super shopper ?

    • Did they remove it, i still got one super shopper from last promotion and amazon is still listed there

  • Just wondering if anyone knows
If I buy the woolworths card can I buy Google play card with it

I need $150 so 10% off is quite good

    • +2

If you buy a Woolworths card from Special, then you can use it to buy gift cards in store at Woolworths with it yes.

      I did that last week.

      • Thank you for letting me know

      • Works with Gpay only or Apple Wallet should work as well? (Buy GC at Wooly in store using this special gift card)

  • Can you still use special shopping card in Wollies or Coles? Think it was blocked.
Need to find good way to exchange my card purchased years ago.

    • +1

MCC 5411 (which is the merchant category code typically used by supermarkets and grocers, including Coles, Woolworths, ALDI, IGA, Harris Farms, etc) was blocked on Special gift cards in late November 2022.

    • If you still want Woolworths or Coles gc - you can use to buy a physical card at Big W or Target/Kmart respectively

  • nothing on my 2 cards

  • I had offer last time. but special gift card declined the transaction.

    • Same here

  • +2

I received this offer on all my Amex cards but did not save it as I do not support doddy businesses.

  • I remember last time and the one before that was a chaos. need to chase them up to get the credit

  • I found I could use the general shopping card at some restaurant ordering platforms.

Anyone got a suggestion for good place to drain the cards (E.g. Ato processor who'll accept them etc)

    • Can use them at Woolworths to purchase a visa debit card. $200 would be $180 but the have to factor in the $7.95 purchase fee meaning only a $12.05 profit.

      • +3

You can use the Woolworths-branded Special gift card at Woolworths.

However, I suspect the previous commenter was referring to the Super Shopper gift card (no longer available for sale), as that was the “general shopping card” previously offered by Special. Supermarkets (including Woolworths) were blocked on the Super Shopper gift card in late November 2022.

  • +1

Too many problems with Special Gift Cards. I've had difficulty adding cards to Google Pay tap-and-pay (unable to get it verified).
And the Woolworths card is a debit card that works on a different system to Woolworths eGift cards. You have to remember to use that particular debit card rather than using the Everyday Rewards app to pay if there might not be sufficient balance, and need to hassle with split payments to use the last of the balance.

All in all not worth the trouble.

  • Awesome - had this on 2 cards, so just bought 2 x $200 Woolies cards in 2 separate transactions (saving $40). Will go in tomorrow and buy $400 of Ultimate Everyone cards for 8000 EDR points. Not bad - $360 for $400 value and 8000 EDR points

    • Let us know how you go

    • Way to go!
Sadly not for my AMEX card….

    • Can you use woolies gift cards to pay for gift cards? I was under the impression that you couldn't.

      • +4

That's correct, however the Special Woolworths card is a digital Mastercard that works at Woolworths, not a Woolworths gift card.

        • +1

Correct, just used to buy the current discounted cotton on gift card, you load the card in your wallet and chose card payment at eftpos and paywave, voila.

    • Can I ask: it looks to me like the Woolie card from Special is a digital only card. So, is it online Woolie shopping only? How do you use this at a physical store? Do you just add it to Apple Wallet or something? Apple Wallet has an 8 card limit right, so even if you get rid of all the permanent card in your wallet, you can have a maximum of $200 x8 to use at Woolies physically, splitting payments if the amount exceeds $200, right?

      • +2

it looks to me like the Woolie card from Special is a digital only card.

Yes. It is not sold in a physical form.

So, is it online Woolie shopping only?

        No.

It says on the Woolworths Special gift card webpage: Once activated the Woolworths Special Card is redeemable at Woolworths physical stores and/or online in Australia

How do you use this at a physical store? Do you just add it to Apple Wallet or something?

If you want to use it at a physical Woolworths store in Australia, you must add the gift card to a supported mobile wallet first (i.e. Apple Pay, Google Wallet).

Apple Wallet has an 8 card limit right, so even if you get rid of all the permanent card in your wallet, you can have a maximum of $200 x8 to use at Woolies physically, splitting payments if the amount exceeds $200, right?

The 8 card limit you refer should only apply to iPhones before the iPhone 8.

Any iPhones from the iPhone 8 onwards should have a 16 card limit, but this discussion on Reddit suggests that iPhones running iOS 17 have this 16 card limit removed.

Keep in mind that Apple does fraud checks whenever you attempt to add a card to Apple Pay, so even if you run iOS 17 on an iPhone, you may find that Apple may stop you from adding 8x Woolworths Special gift cards in a short period of time.

Thanks for the heads up OP! Got the offer on 7 cards - definitely helps out with the increase in cost of living :)

    • Received the offer on five of my ten cards.

So I can't say "got ten" or "eight out of ten (cats)". :(

      • +1

Got it on every primary card except DJ. Got it on every sup too. 11 offers total. $220 saving, if I can be bothered. Looks like hard work judging by some comments here. You need to keep track of all the separate cards you end up getting - lose track of one, and all your savings are gone.

    • You have 7 amex cards?!

      • Supplementary cards - by default, most hardcore ozbargainers here would have the fee-free Amex QF and VV on hand

        • supplementary cards receive separate offers?! How did I not know this lol.

Also, can I have my partner as my supplementary even though they already have their own amex card?

  • Can you pay through Apple Pay at checkout or does it need to come from typing in card details manually?

    • +1

You can pay by apple pay- done it three times at least ( from the last Special Amex promo)

  • +2

my payments are failing, anyone experiencing the same?

    • Same here payment failed

      • created a new account and it now works

        • Thanks yes, new account worked

    • Same here. I think we're all trying on Woolworths cards, possibly allocation exausted. Does someone needs any other product from Special.com.au and can confirm if their card is working?

    • +1

They've identified you as a professional and thus blocked you. Try a different phone number, email and ip address.

  • Tried buying on the website and my Amex card was declined.

    • Failing on the app and website. I think it's for new Special customers only as reported by @googoogaga. T&Cs should be clear.

      • I'm not a new Special customer (had used in past for Amex promos) and was able to check out. and Amex confirmed the rebate via email.

I logged into Special on checkout if that changes anything.

  • Just tried now and my Amex worked

  • For anyone with payments failing, try Apple Pay. Both my transactions worked fine first time

    • Tried that too, think the payment rejection is from Special. Getting different messages on app 'this card cannot be used for this transaction' and website 'Payment declined by Bank', and apple pay just says 'payment failed'. Looks like it's 'one-use per card per lifetime of the account', and we all have used similar offers before! So time to create new Special accounts.

  • Also available with Westpac Credit Cards (targeted) for those that may not have an Amex, except with a $10 cap, so max value to purchase would be $100

  • +1

Thanks. Got it on my explorer. Looks like WW gc is the best choice for me since no Amazon

  • -1

Can you used the Special Gift Card for Wollies to buy a Wollies eGift card from a discounted site (eg NRMA) to then add it to the Rewards app?

I like the convenience of using Everyday Pay but you cannot add a Special gift card straight to the app :(

    • +2

You can buy a Woolworths card from special and buy a wish gift card from woolies using the one you bought from Special. It has been explained several times that it works as special card is not a gift card but a debit Mastercard.

  • Try to purchase the ultimate everyone at Woolies and payment got declined !!!

    • Update: tried to purchase the ultimate gift card again using the Woolworths card, but this time not through the self checkout and it works so avoid using them through the self checkout if you are going to buy gift card

    • Woolworths has blocked most prepaid cards from buying other gift cards, as have other retailers. The goldens day of manufactured spending with discounted prepaid cards are over.

      • Interesting. Worked at self checkout a few weeks ago no problem

        • I just tried at lunch time and it works.

  • +1

Anyone else struggling to log in to the special website?

    • +1

cant not login, unable to create an account as well

      • I managed to get in. Reset password but didn't reuse my generic one and made a new one for the site.

  • Got 2x $20 credits on my Amex accounts already

  • +1

most useless website ever, rejected both of my amex cards regardless what i try, dodgy website

    • Same, 2 AMEX cards, both being declined at checkout whether using Apple Pay or card details.

  • Confirmed you can't use the Woolworths card to buy a Wish gift card from the seniors discount portal. Was hoping to stack the 10% off with the 5% off and also convert into a general Wish gift card

  • Got "Your card has been declined" on Westpac credit card. My Citi cards were having the same problem late last year. Why doesn't anyone else neg these time wasters?

    • +1

They're like the bookies that block sharp customers because they don't make money on them.

    • +1

AMEX Velocity card has same issue with being declined despite it showing up on the app as targeted offer.

  • Got it on all our cards. Bought woollies gift card without issues. Will see how I go converting it to a wish card before getting more.

    • I bought wish gc at ww using the gc. It works fine. I bought more for big w as it has amazon gc there

  • Hi, if these are a debit MasterCard does it matter which card you purchase?
I had a debit card which was Westfield branded, I sued it at Bunnings recently.

I'm just not sure why there's a Woolworths specific one, wouldn't this work at any retailer?
I'm trying to use 2 Amex cards to buy $400 worth of Amazon, Amazon is not on the special site, but a debit card should work anywhere.
Please let me know if I'm missing something.

    • +2

if these are a debit MasterCard does it matter which card you purchase?

      It does.

Firstly, the gift cards in this deal are prepaid gift cards operating on the Mastercard network. That distinction is important, because prepaid cards are not debit cards nor credit cards. Some merchants will not process payments from prepaid gift cards or even prepaid cards.

Secondly, there are two different kinds of gift card sold on Special:

      • Special Category Cards (e.g. Aussie Explorer, Tech Head, Pub Crawler): these are gift cards that appear to work at specific Merchant Category Codes (MCCs). Although the Special website does not list the MCCs Special has chosen to whitelist on each gift card, you can get a hint of them by looking at the “featured retailers” on the applicable gift card page. For example, the Aussie Explorer mentions BP, Kathmandu and Webjet, which indicates that gift card works at service stations, outdoor apparel retailers and (at a minimum). You could always try to use a gift card a retailer not mentioned on the Special website, but it may not work. For example, I tried using an Aussie Explorer gift card at a parking meter categorised as an automotive parking lot, but payment was declined. I could not see the response code, but I presume it was due to the MCC for automotive parking lots not being permitted on that gift card.

      • Special Brand Cards (e.g. Woolworths, BIG W, JB Hi-Fi): these gift cards only work at the merchants specified on the gift card (and Special has worked with these merchants to ensure that these gift cards only work at those merchants).

I had a debit card which was Westfield branded, I sued it at Bunnings recently.

My guess that was a physical Westfield eftpos gift card? If so, that is a prepaid eftpos gift card that basically works at any retailer accepting eftpos around Australia (unless the merchant chooses to reject them, or the merchant is using Square EFTPOS terminals). Its usage is not restricted to Westfield shopping centres.

I'm just not sure why there's a Woolworths specific one, wouldn't this work at any retailer?

There is a Woolworths specific one, because Special has worked with Woolworths to create a prepaid gift card that is restricted to Woolworths stores and Woolworths Online. My best guess is that Special does this by only allowing you to make a payment if the EFTPOS terminal or online payment gateway you are using is an EFTPOS terminal or online payment gateway that appears on Special’s whitelist for that gift card. Each EFTPOS terminal or online payment gateway uses a unique identifier, which - in combination with the merchant name - makes it relatively easy for Special to pick out whether you are at Woolworths or BIG W or Amazon. Special can see this information when you attempt to make a payment, which is how they are able to approve or decline a payment.

This approach falls apart when you are using an EFTPOS terminal at Woolworths that Special does not know about. For example, if Woolworths opens a new store (or adds more checkouts to an existing store), Woolworths would need to remember to tell Special about this, otherwise Special will see an unknown EFTPOS terminal and will decline payment.

I'm trying to use 2 Amex cards to buy $400 worth of Amazon, Amazon is not on the special site

Amazon AU no longer appears on the Special website, because the only gift card it was previously featured on (the Special Super Shopper gift card) was withdrawn from sale on 29 February 2024.

      • +2

Thanks for all that info and the time spent explaining.
I'm going to purchase Big W as I saw that I can buy Amazon gift cards from them.

  • Okay. Bought a special gift card for myself, got the email, activated it, checked the details (appears to be "loaded"), but it refuses to add to Apple Pay, and cannot add to Google Pay. Attempted to use card details to buy directly from website, but that's rejected also.

First time dud with this lot. Have attempted to contact customer service team, got an automated "we might take 1- 3 business days" to get back to you.

Let's see how long they really take.

10% cashback is good when it works seamlessly, but stupid when it fails for no apparent reason like this time.
(Have purchased in the past with no issue, but today is the first problem)

  • No more good deals from AMEX now. I am going to cancel my AMEX card.

  • Tried to pay using a Woolworths Gift Card purchased from Special via Apple Wallet at Woolworths Metro and received the message "Status Declined". Checkout operator didn't have a clue how to fix it, said I need to show the gift card barcode - of which there doesn't seem to be any. Anyone else encountered this?

    • +1

Is it a Woolworths Metro that appears on the Woolworths Special gift card page?

I can see there is at least one Woolworths Metro missing on that page, and that missing Woolworths Metro was a new store that opened within the last six months.

      • I did not check that but indeed you are correct - the Metro store does not appear on that page (it was a Metro that opened a few months ago). That is super annoying, I just assumed it would be a generic Woolworths Gift card that would work at all Woolworths.

        • +2

I would consider submitting a complaint to Special (the gift card issuer), asking why that Woolworths store has not been added. If you want to use slightly pointed words, maybe mention that is misleading to say this card is “redeemable at Woolworths physical stores”, yet there are Woolworths physical stores missing from Special’s list.

Alternatively, if you go to a Woolworths store listed on the Special gift card webpage, you should be able to purchase a WISH gift card, using your Special gift card as the payment method.
