The customer review on the web page may be helpful in getting this troublesome device to connect.

FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO GET THE DEVICE WORKING (11 days ago)

I can see why people give up on these, but they do work. This is how I got mine to work:

    Initial setup

    1. In the Lenovo Link app, select the + button to add device, then select Add Manually, and select 'Security & Sensors'
    2. If you want to add to the Grid Connect app, select add new device then select 'Others'
    3. Enter Wi-Fi details
    4. Reset the device: Turn on the device, wait for a while. Use the provide pin type tool (or a pin), press and hold the reset button for 5 seconds. (I've found the proposed method of turning on, waiting for 10 seconds, turning off and then back on doesn't make a difference). You may need to do this a few times to get the device to start blinking rapidly. Keep trying until it does it.

If you're connecting it to a network that supports both 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz, the device may have difficulties connecting. I found turning off the Wi-Fi on your phone or enabling airplane mode temporarily and then reconnecting to the target Wi-Fi network allowed the device to connect. Good luck!

    Waiting for the "but …but …but, it's not USB-C".

  • +5

Warning - these battery wifi sensors have a very slow response, as they need to re-connect to the wifi every time they are triggered.

    • Quite frustrating and even if you plugin it in, it likely still sleeps.
Will probably just use ESPHome to assemble one

  • At $4 you can't go wrong for basic motion sensor

    • +6

Yes you can. Hours of frustration setting it up to find out it's too slow to trigger lights in a practical way

      • Agreed. Not to mention it’ll be battery hungry

        • Looks like it can be powered by usb

          • @asa79: Yep, but most likely it doesn’t alter its wake up and sleep behaviour on usb, so it’ll still be laggy.
I could be wrong but I doubt they’d build in a different use case

        • And also being stuck in dodgy software

  • Unable to process the order while payment

  • +1

Does it support Tuya / Smart Life? I'm struggling to find this.

    • +1

Yes the range is Tuya based.

  • Bought a couple, yet to open the package

      Great review!

  • I had Lenovo wifi window sensors ($15 clearance @ Jb Hi-Fi a while ago). These were dropping out from Tuya (not getting status update) not long after each reset. Not very useful. I know this is a different sensor, I personally wouldn’t try again.

    • Same the lenovo smart light bulbs. Constantly dropping out. Gave up at the end.

Anyone know what's inside them? Wonder if can be repurposed with ESPHome or similar..

Edit: Decided to grab 3 for $12 just to have a peek/poke at them, see what they can do!

Looks like you can flash them with tasmota but not over wifi. Apparently fastest response time is about 4 seconds to first MQTT message.

      • Good info!

Seems some may have gotten ESPHome to work on the TYWE3S board, looks to be based on an ESP8266.

Rechargable ESP8266 for $4? Sounds like a cool toy!

        • +1

They've definitely got an ESP8266 TYWE3S in them, so you can solder on wires and re-flash via serial.

The 'stock' ESPhome firmware would stay awake as expected, but I couldn't get the motion sensor to work until after lots of fiddling. Worth a shot at this price for other projects though

          • @Switchblade88: I have managed to flash to ESPhome, how did you get the motion sensor to work? I have done plenty of fiddling but perhaps not enough!

I have this as part of the kit. This is the only thing that fails to connect if it loses battery. Even after charging, refuses to connect. Hard reset fixes it. Even tried charging early and still failed after some time. I am version 4 (name additions) to make any automation to work right again.

  • So everyone say it's not that great but any ways to put this into good use? We able to add anything to make it better ?

    • It is what it is, if you want better, something like Konnected or ESPHome will give better performance.

Of course that’ll cost more like $10, (ESP-01, Sensor module).

Assuming it’s Tuya, using LocalTuya may give somewhat better performance skipping the cloud.

I’ve paired it with my entrance lights and it works fine. Sure, there’s a slight delay but it doesn’t bother me. For $4, I’m not asking much. I have bought motion sensors off AliExpress and Temu that cost three times more and they fail after a year or less.

You get what you pay for.

  • +1

Personally I after my experience with Lenovo smart bulbs, I don't buy anything from Lenovo that's smart

  • Anyone able to connect them? The lenovo app is a piece of s#!t and keeps saying these server is down. Tried both tuya smart and smart life apps and it didn't connect for me.

    • Yes, it’s connected to Tuya smart for me. Make sure your device is fully charged then reset and connect.

      • Did you select sensor (wifi)?

        • Yep, I did

          • @friedmaki: Ya not working for me. I tried sensor (wifi) and motion sensor (wifi). Tried on my standard network (5g + 2.4g) and also a separate iot 2.4g network.

I have tp link tapo and Kasa, mirabella genio and tuya stuff all setup without any issues so not sure what the issue is 🤔

            • @kamelataturd: Please try AP mode to pair the sensor to app, I listed the steps below.

  • I bought 4, ended up trading them at cex for $9 each so $20 for my time wasted

  • Spent several hours on pairing the sensor to app, found a way finally.

You need to use AP mode to pair this sensor to app, but the manual doesn’t show us how to put the sensor to AP mode.

    1. For smart life or Tuya, select sensor->motion sensor (wifi), then choose “LED flashing slowly” ( not “ flashing quickly”!!).

    2. For Lenovo Link pro, choose “Security & Sensors” -> “montion sensor”, you need to switch mode after it failed to find device.

    3. Power on the sensor, wait for the red LED’s off (around 40s), then press and hold the reset button for more than 5s, you can see the LED flashing red quickly, then press the reset button once, you can see the LED’s flashing red slowly.
(You might need to press the reset button several times until the LED’s flashing red slowly)

    4. Now Wifi SSID begins with smart-xxxxxxx will be showing in the list, choose it.

    5. The sensor will pair to your app successfully.
