Krug Grande Cuvee (SIX PACK) for $1,170 ($195 Per Bottle)

1190

OK… so we're not talking $3 bottle of wine here…. but this is one of the best champagnes out there… frankly consistently the best in my opinion. Sometimes a house will knock out a vintage that might be better, but for the most part a bottle of this will knock anything else out of the cellar, figuratively speaking. Normal price for a bottle is around $295 at Dans. Buy six, and it would drop to $280. Buy six here, and save $85 per bottle.

Better news - checked Dans and they have dropped the 'any six' price to $198 for a bottle. Not as good as this, but if you only want one to celebrate something very special, then you can always get one from Dans and make up the other 5 bottles with some $3 cleanskins…. go on…. use some of that money you've saved on other things through ozbargain… you know you want to… perhaps combine it with a $5 burrito <grin>

  • http://www.winemarket.com.au/DOM-PERIGNON-2002-6 this is a better deal as you're saving more, also Dom > Krug any day.

    • +5

sorry, but you're comparing multi-vintage krug vs single-vintage dom

krug grande cuvee is considered the best non-vintage champagne

like vs like, krug > dom any day - ask any true wine connoisseur :)

    • +3

Dom is a good drop, very well made, and all power to those who like/prefer it. It is a vintage champagne which means it does vary from year to year, and isn't always available. Again, from a consistency perspective (I believe) it's hard to beat Krug - especially if you prefer a drier wine with the oaky/nutty flavour versus the cleaner (arguably more clinical - but personally I don't think that can be a bad thing!) styles that spend a lot of their early lives in stainless steel. Personally (for french fizz) I'm old school and like the additional flavour you get from the maturation in small oak barrels that Krug still goes through.

      • I think PLasticSpaceman had sampled a few Doms or Krugs at the time of choosing his/her ozbargain nick !!

I just love seeing a six pack of alcohol for $1170 posted as a bargain on OzBargain. I hope this deal gets voted up to the front page :-)

    • +21

I look forward to presenting my wife with a bottle of this and a free catchoftheday earring set and see which she prefers !

      • earrings as diamonds are apparently a girls best friend. (Don't tell her they are fake)

    • +1

I hope that the ozbargainers who bought those Nikon lens mugs drink this champagne in those mugs in true ozbargain style.

      • I know i would, if i could afford $200 for a bottle of booze.

  • +7

Is this the expensive wine from that episode of BlackBooks?

    • +8

      Only if it's dusty

      • +6

        "Diiiirrrrty"

    • +1

There may have been a bottle of Krug on the shelf, but I think you are thinking of http://blackbooks.wikia.com/wiki/Le_Vin_du_Rosier

      • +2

All I know is that it's not in the cheap clean wine in the bigger rack, but the old expensive dusty wine on the smaller rack.

  • +10

"frankly consistently the best in my opinion."

I like how you've had enough of these (at this price) to be able to state that the quality is consistent !!

    • +36

Ah. A long time ago I was single. I owned my own house, no mortgage, and had two sports cars. I used to buy vintage Pol Roger by the dozen and drink the older vintage(s) (my general rule of thumb was never to drink the current release, but let that age for a bit) with my spag bol, pizza, or take away chinese. Krug was for special occasions, but yes I have drunk a few bottles in my time. The price has changed over the years though - the first bottle I bought would have cost well under $100.

It was a sad and lonely life. I didn't know what I was missing. Now I have children. ;-)

      • +46

Your sad lonely life sounds like you were living the dream.

        • -2

You drink $200 bottles of champagne regularly yet your penny pinching with those of us on ozbargain?!

        • +8

past tense… did I mention the kids? Anyhow, saving money on some things can leave more to spend on the occasional luxury item…. but it's been years since I spent more than $35 for a bottle of wine (at a restaurant) or $20 (at a bottle shop)….

        • +2

It was mainly tongue in cheek, ozbargain is for everyone

        • +13

          I'm never having kids…

        • +3

Tongue in bottle, perhaps? No offence taken. ;-)

        • +26

Ozbargain is all about saving money on essentials like SSDs and glitter Eneloops so that we can then afford the finer things like $1000 six packs.

How does this compare to Great Western ?

    • +31

Both are liquid, contain bubbles and get you drunk. I think that's where the similarities end.

      • Agreed. It's just expensive squashed grapes with bubbles! I may not have the palate for champagne, but to me it all tastes like Asti Riccadona or whatever that $12 champers is!

i was waiting for your comment on my comment…

        • +4

Well, this must be comment-ception because the first thing I did when I clicked on this link was CTRL+F "JV"…lo and behold…here you are.

Your opinions on this deal, JV?

        • +2

Your opinions on this deal, JV?

I don't think it is 30 times better than a good Australian sparkling to justify 30 times the price…

        • +1

          Not how wine prices work.

A $600 Penfolds Grange is not 40 times better than a $15 Kilkanoon Shiraz (a good wine in its own right) but the Grange is a lot more sought after.

Besides, the deal is $195 per bottle - how many 'good' Australian sparkling wines are available for $6.50?

        • Then don't buy it and don't comment on it…?

  • +5

Great champagne, but knowing how it will be transferred by oz post I wouldn't risk it. I don't want my $200 bottles bouncing around all day only to sit in the hot sun. If I am buying quality I will buy it from a retailer I trust to take good care of it up until the point when I take possession.

  • +51

What advantages does this champagne have over, say, a train… which I could also afford?

    • +1

Will a few packs of this be alright for my 21st? Got like 100 mates coming over to get waaaasted

    • -3

If your aim is to get wasted then this isn't the drop for you, any old cheap champagne will do if you need it to be champagne (think along the lines of moet) drunk and on the cheap.

      • +4

It could just be me, but I do think he was joking.

        • I don't know where you got that idea from

    • +10

Or you could just buy a ton of spirits and beer like every other 21 year old. Unless of course your mates are refined gentlemen driving vintage sport cars and will attend in suits.

      • -8

        Men don't drink champagne.

        • -2

also that was supposed to say Gentlemen. Cant edit it :(

        • Yes, but not with coke.

      • +8

They will indeed be attending in very fine suits each with their own penguin accompanying them

    • If it fits in the back of your ute.

  • +22

I recommend mixing with "Daily Juice Company" brand Orange Juice. Don't waste your Krug mixing it with Orange Concentrate.

    • +4

Great idea, but pulp from such a high quality drop as Daily Juice may make it difficult to drink from a beer bong.

Find it hard to pay retail for Krug (or equivalent top shelf champagne) when I can drink a few bottles worth in the lounges/onboard on a $600 first class ticket (Singapore Airlines + Swiss) — the champagne I quaffed basically paid for the ticket. :P #ozbargainstyle

    • How do you get a $600 first class ticket?

    • Enlighten us!

  • +2

Why does it say: "Drink now until 2010"

  • -1

Can't tell if this is a joke or a wank-fest.
Any number of wines at one tenth the price will compete well against this in a blind tatsing by regular wine drinkers.
OP is setting up a false dichotomy by saying it is this or a $3 bottle.
How abount comparing itg to a $30 bottle of Aussie bubbly, not spewmante.

    • +8

Fair point. But I wasn't saying that it was this or a $3 bottle - that's a strawman (informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position) argument. You can't compare a $30 Aussie bubbly (let alone a $3 bottle of plonk) with a top Champagne. Now that's a false dilemma or dichotomy. They are different. A better question is, is the Krug worth $200? Well, possibly not… definitely not if you don't like champagne or are more than happy with cheaper alternatives. I would note that the amount of labour/effort (ie costs) involved in producing a bottle of Krug (I've been to their winery) is significantly more than that required to produce a typical bottle of wine so it is understandable that it would cost more.

As an aside, for a decent aussie sparkler, I'd currently recommend the Grant Burge (http://www.cellarmasters.com.au/wines/Grant-Burge-Pinot-C017…) at $144 for 6 or so. Can be found around the traps for around the $18 mark…. actually, vintagecellars I think have a special on the blanc de blanc for $30 for two bottles….

      • +1

I suppose it's not too bad a price when Harvey Norman charge the same for a bottle of water.

      • The Grant Burge sparkling Pinot is a hands down the best bubbly anywhere near $20.

    • Last year upon presenting my grandmother with a $55 bottle of Mumm for her birthday, she nodded at it and began to tell us how she much prefers Krug. I thought $55 champagne was okay, but I have been assured otherwise… So IMO good bargain, because $300 wine is never an option in my family, but at this price… okay, she's still not getting it, but you get the point. If you've got the money, this is a great deal.

  • +1

Give wine wankers a double blind test and they have no clue. Put the fancy label on the bottle and they purr with pleasure. Human nature- it's a wonderful thing.

    • +1

      So true

    • +13

Yes, true… but not all people who enjoy wine are 'wine wankers'. Some spend a lot of time and effort developing their skills so that indeed they can identify wines in a blind (double or not) test. Personally I just enjoy drinking! Sadly a lot of people equate the cost of something with the quality - these things definitely are not always related. As we OZbargainers know, something can be cheap but good quality… or expensive and rubbish.

    • And colour white wine red and the "wine experts" describe it as tasting like a red wine. http://www.forbes.com/sites/rahimkanani/2012/06/22/consider-…

      • In the future, there will be connoisseur varieties of everything - you will be able to spend $200 on a jar of strawberry jam and there will be tasting notes on the side saying it contains hints of burnt toffee, brioche and old hat.

  • +3

That's a great price. Can someone pls lend me a grand?

  • +5

I citrus notes in Krug are far less exciting than in this:
    http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_11625/golden-gate-passio…

    • I imagine that would complement a spam fritter perfectly.

  • For $1170 I could fill my cellar (?) with wine and still have change to fill my fridge with beer.

    • +2

for 1170, i could BUILD my cellar

definitely a top buy at <200 dollars a bottle. Will be great as a christmas present for some people, or just in storage for some uber fantastic party.

Bollinger is far better, both Bollinger and Krug are the only 2 that fermented the traditional way but Bollinger is the only one that has original vines unlike krug,

  • DOM PERIGNON i pesonal think is much better still good buy for Aus.
