The reviews only show you the best picture. Currently, the ASMedia chipset has compatibility issues with some older Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 3 systems. Being able to update the firmware of the enclosure would be good. However, upgrading BIOS on systems to the latest could also be helpful.

Also, there are multiple ways to connect Thunderbolt 4 to the CPU. The method that connects directly to CPU will get you better speed when using this enclosure. Or, if you have a PC with AsMedia USB4 chipset.

OP mentioned there are other offerings with the same chipset. There are ones below $100.

If your Thunderbolt 4 system is incompatible with this enclosure (chipset), the worst case is that you get USB 3.2 gen 2 speed. The chipset used does support USB 3.2 gen 2x2, but Macs don't support that (well, Intel Thunderbolt 4 chipset doesn't support that either). Another issue with this chipset is that it seems a bit fussy with the SSDs (if you are targetting top speed).

    • You can get the newest ASMedia enclosures from aliexpress cheaper. I haven’t had issues but that’s not the say there isn’t any of course.

      • Yes, but they also have the same issues. The chipset also gets quite hot so some of them put a fan inside.

Intel is shrewd and made sure AsMedia's USB4 host chipset works with Intel Thunderbolt devices. However, Intel doesn't do the same (i.e. Intel doesn't care if these USB4 enclosures don't work properly on Intel Thunderbolt 4/3).

I've encountered issues because I have Thunderbolt 3 and 4 devices (include 2 different types of Thunderbolt 4). These do work with Apple Silicon Macs (other than being a bit fussy with SSDs if you want good write speed).

      • I got one for sata ssd the chipset is damnnn hot. It’s a mediatek something something

  • I've been looking at TB4/USB4 enclosures for a couple weeks now. I need one for a Mac Studio. This one comes up a lot, though there's several people that have reliability issues with the Z666. Does anyone here have experience with it?

The OWC Express 1M2 seems like the best bet though it's ~50% more expensive than the Zikedrive.

The chipset used does get hot and some people indicated when it thermal throttle, the performance drops a lot. It is unclear whether it is the chipset or because the chipset itself pushes the SSD harder, it is causing the SSD to thermal throttle.

On Macs, while the read performance is impressive, write performance is SSD dependent (some SSDs work well with this chipset, some not so well). The chipset firmware isn't mature enough I think. It's too early to tell how reliable these enclosures are. As you pointed out, you can see some people complaining about reliability.

A lot of these are priced lower than Intel Thunderbolt 3 chipset based enclosures (they are being sold as Thunderbolt 4 enclosures - a dodgy practice, they do include a Thunderbolt 4 cable to confuse you). Therefore, these enclosures are more cost effective. Some OZBers went for USB4 enclosures with a fan inside. If you have this type of budget ($160), it might be better to get one with a fan. Should be able to find some of them at $160 or lower at AliExpress.

I struggled to find an enclosure which supported 4Tb and 20gbps - as many manufacturers say their cases only supported 2Tb. It is likely they havent updated their specifications since the 4Tb SSDs were released.

Ive placed an order for Ziketech so will see how it goes. I was trying to avoid having a fan so that ruled out the Orico 20gbps enclosure with a fan - but also the web site says it only supports 2Tb.

I've now found a Simplecom 40gbps SE640 enclsure - $120 to $165 depending where you look and there is also a Volans UCMS (built in fan) $148.

    Aliexpress has a ORICO USB4 M.2 SSD Case 40Gbps M2 NVM $154 + gst = $169. I havent found a 20gbps enclosure which support 4Tb under $100 on Aliexpress as yet.

    Amazon.au Orico 40gbps - https://www.amazon.com.au/ORICO-40Gbps-Enclosure-Compatible-… $169

  • Other ASMEDIA USB4 enclosures showlisted below, some half the price of the ZikeDrive! Some with fans over the ASMEDIA USB4 chip to cool it, others which a hefty enclosure housing to act as a big heatsink. MAIWO K1695 with big fan over the enclosure showing there are temp issues with ASMEDIA USB4 enclosures.

Careful too with the USB4/TB4 cable included. Low cost products may cheap out there including a cable with no "4" (TB4 certified) or "40Gbps" (USB4 certified) marking on so the whole enclosure delivers half it's max performance unless fork out $$ to buy a proper cable if don't have an existing one to re-deploy for enclosure use.

JEYI TB-2464 FAN being the best of this lot imho with cable showing "4" (TB4 certified).
