FYI - it may be useful. I think it will work with this code
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/822801

    • It doesn't work for me.

  • +1

Router noob, will one of them plug in the NBN box so I don't need a separate router?

    • +6

      Correct

    • +3

Only if you are on HFC or FTTB/P.

With FTTC you still need a modem.

      • Thanks for the additional details!

      • nbn don't give you a VDSL2 modem for FTTB.

FTTC NCD is a VDSL2 modem that is given to you by nbn and it gets plugged into the Deco router.

Guys this is all new to me, compared to the eero 6 routers, which one is better?

    • +7

These are automatically better because they aren't owned by Amazon.

    • I have the xe75pro version of these. Setting them up was a great experience using the Deco app. It's nice to be able to configure things using the app rather than a Web interface. I hadn't bought a new router for 4 years or so and it seems things have improved a lot since then!

Probably asked umpteen times by now.

    Tangible benefits upgrading from m5s?

    • +1

      Spend your money elsewhere

    • +1

If you're in a busy household with a fast internet connection it may well be worth it, otherwise probably not.

  • Do i plug each unit into my router and PC? or is it all wireless ?

    • +5

This will replace your current router. So you connect the ethernet cable that is currently in your router to the main mesh node, and then position the rest of the mesh nodes wherever you like in your house and they’ll connect to each wirelessly. As you walk around the house, the node with the strongest signal should automatically connect to your device.

You can still use your current router if you wish, and connect the main node to one of the ethernet ports on your current router. But usually you dont need to do this, as the main mesh node will connect directly to your nbn box.

      • Question - if I have an NBN box in the garage and 6 data cables points (mostly running to TVs) - does this mean I can purchase this and a Switch and then it will go NBN box into the main router into the switch into the data points? Then I will have direct line to all my data points plus the two mesh boxes to place in my house?

        • +2

          You could go

          NBN to Main Router Unit
          Router Unit to Switch
          Switch to Data Points
Connect the 2 mesh units to data points
Use the 2 extra gigabit ethernet ports on the Mesh units like a switch

Your mesh units will then have wired backhaul to the router unit and won't need to use a wireless link

Edit: Oh.. wait, you can just connect the 2 other mesh units to the 2 free ports on the main router unit and not need a switch in the garage at all!

        • +1

Yeah thats right! Although as a bonus, since it seems you have ethernet datapoints all over your house, you could connect the mesh nodes directly by ethernet via the closest datapoint for best performance and you will then also gain 2 'extra' ethernet ports as these have 3 ethernet ports at the back of each node.

Edit: XeKToReX beat me to it

          • @KiwiBloke: Thank you both - sounds like this might be the way to go for me. So the NBN box to this router, directly into the data points and then just set up the mesh somewhere in the house into those data points. I assume this is kind of making it redundant having the direct points as the signal will be strong enough? Or is it best to just invest an additional 20 bucks and get the switch so all data points behind the tv have a direct line?

            • @bravyboy: It's definitely worth getting the switch for the garage to make use of your Ethernet data points, every device using Ethernet gets a more reliable, faster connection and leaves the wifi bandwidth for devices that can only use wifi.

Be aware that plugging this into the NBN box doesn't always work without making settings changes, it depends on your ISPs router setup. If you're not sure, comment with your ISP.

  • My TP-Link Deco M5 cannot provide an offline local network without an internet connection. Does X50 have this flaw as well?

    • I am using X60 and internal network works fine even without internet, I am sure X50 will be the same.

      • Yes it works.

As a side note - to anyone thinking about buying a cheap eero off ebay/Facebook.

They're often sold beause the sellers RSP gave it to them for free. If that person then cancels their contract, they'll brick your eero and you'll be left with a paperweight (as has just happened to me)

    • ouch, good to know, although I wasn't looking at Eero as an option

    • Don’t they just send a bill to the person you bought it off for any outstanding payments/instalments?

      • Unsure - but the routers are disabled

  • I currently have AC3000 Orbi RBR50 3 pack. Is it worth changing to this?

    • Is there any issue with existing one?

  • I guess price is ok for a 3 piece, but if you're a 2 piece, Asus XD6S $292 on Amazon AU - fulfilled by Amazon Germany.

I'd just be careful buying WiFi network gear fulfilled by overseas Amazon - not only will the power adapter not be for the correct country (I know you can get a converter plug), but sometimes the WiFi bands are different due to regulatory requirement restrictions in Australia.

      • I bought uk versions, work perfectly fine. I know the 2.4 band can sometimes can less signal strength, but 5ghz is all g. Found AU transformers on ebay for $10 instead of using an adapter.

        • Me too, uk off Amazon, been working well for 3 years.

  • Has anyone got Price Beat at Bunnings yet?

I just sent email through to support requesting price beat at my local store. And incuded prices + url links plus screenshots showing price in stock just incase they reduce peice tomorrow.

Also will be selling one unit once I pick up incase anyone is interested haha.

    • Just drove to local Bunnings that shows 2 units in stock online but they don't actually have any stock apparently. Rang other local store and same story 😞

    • Yep, but only for pickup. My closest store with stock available was 60km away so I passed on. Support told me they can't do price beat for online orders.

    • Hi mate, I just got from Bunnings West Footscray for 266.10 with 10% price beat. Used TGG webpage for price beat.

I would recommend you to go Bunnings directly and negotiate on the spot as bunnings can reduce original price and you can miss 10% price beat. In the worst case, they will say no (which is unlikly due to their policy)

FYI, i did similar price match request with JBHIFI (last year) via email with all supporting pictures and links. Unfortunately, the next day JBHIFI representative refused to pricematch as their competitor increased the price and at the time they clicked the link ,the price was not discounted. They refused to refere to my screenshots that I attached. I wish if I bought from their competitor. I just had some JBHIFI giftcards that I wanted to use.

    • I was able to price beat this at the Bunnings store. Would note that the packaging on both the Bunnings/ OW website is slightly different to the physical product (guy mentioned it might be just some rebranding by the supplier), but they matched off the details and specs to confirm it's the same product and gave it to me.

  • Is this better than two asus with ai mesh?
The asus i got is older ac model, but just wondering if ai mesh (not zen) is better or worse than this.

    Thanks

Not as good as price beat but Bing Lee eBay has it for $296 + $20 discount for eBay Plus voucher

    Link

    • thanks, bought from BingLee Ebay. Ebay have standard $10 off offer too and stock available in stores.

    • should post as a new deal, some can't price beat bunnings as no stock near them

  • +1

Thanks OP I was buying this from Bunnings tomorrow, just saved me $50+ :)

    • just went into bunnings for a price beat but they have dropped their price in the system to $296, so you could go to either one now if you haven't already ordered.

  • Hi All. How does this compare to Google mesh routers?

  • +1

Wow, I literally bought this from Bunnings for $350 2 days ago.

I’m gonna try price beat at bunnings and return the other one haha

  • Anyone in Melbourne want to split a 3 pack? I only need 1 more. I’ll just pick one up on marketplace otherwise

  • Just got a price match 01/03 at officeworks but they had to charge $10 delivery too push it across counter as local competing stores had no stock. Still came to $290.70?
