ITs been talked about before and now with the $10 off code posted by wongsun (10OFF100CRT) in the other BIGW post the price is down again! The past deal here http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/80348

And from there, we learn that inside is a WD Caviar Green Sata drive probably 5900rpm… and it will auto shutoff when now USB activity is detected (very important).

My question though if anyone has an opinion, if I was to buy 3 or 4 and take them all out and place them in RAID5, are these GREEN drives great for that (since its GREEN and eco lol) or would a Seagate goflex desk 2tb external http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/74752 be a better choice to disassemble as drives inside are 7200rpms?

Cheers!

  • Picked one up at OW for $99 last week.

    • Me too, but got 5% Off, using ING Direct's "Wave & Save" debit card.

Does Big W have -compatible- debit/credit card readers?

  • thanks, after the officeworks sale I had a need for one, so this is handy =]

    edit: delivery says $8…

    • What?!? Online only?!?

      • well there is no pickup option that I saw, and I don't think they will accept the code when you visit the store haha

    • Its quoted on BigW "Spend $50 or more and get free delivery"

      • yeah and you need to enter a separate code for that, but you can only use one code

    • Item Subtotal $109.00
      Delivery $8.00

      $10 off $100 or more -$10.00
      Shipping discount -$8.00

      Total $99.00

OP, you can get WD Green 2TB drive for $100 from MSY. Dont see how it is worth the risk, effort, and ruining your warranty to save $1. Same thing with the seagate which is $101, not worth the $2 saving per drive.

    • MMm its a good point… However I was going to reuse the 3 usb3 external cases for older 1TB hard drives I have… Maybe cos I never really had any issues with hard drives in the past (touch wood) that I feel like taking such a risk…. but do HD in raid cause more chances for them to get corrupted?

      • using a hard drive in a raid config shouldn't make it more susceptible to problems, but rebuilding a 6TB raid 5 isn't going to be much fun.

I tend to agree, listing things that can be discounted by using the $10 voucher doesn't make them a sudden or instant bargain as the code can be applied to many things.

If the drive were to come on special at say $99 or $89 and could then be had for $10 less, that's different, but applying a code to the standard price of something just isn't a bargain.

Thats the same as saying Wongsun's post of the code is no bargain because that can be used on the standard price of anything on the site…

But i did mention I used his code for this… and yes it can be perceived as a dupe but up to the people.. just thought I'll share about this drive

        • +2

Then why not just share it in the comments of the original post and the OP there can then add it to the main body of their post along with anything else anyone thinks is worth mentioning.

Are we to now expect that every item over $100 be individually posted here as a pseudo bargain touting the use of the $10 code?

          Gawd I hope not…

        • +5

dude, regardless of whether this is a dupe or not, your logic (re: wondsun's post) makes absolutely no sense whatsoever…

        • +2

Then why not just share it in the comments of the original post

          exactly, it's the same deal… thus a dupe…

        • YES THIS is good point! The point about using a discount code on a product that is on standard price being not a bargain isn't so correct. However, apologies for making this known in the new post sections section instead.

The deal on the drive is already posted here…

You are not posting a new bargain, just combining posts… You should have just commented on one and linked to the other and vice-versa…

not a bargain isn't so correct

also, double negatives are bad grammar…

        • Office works are out of stock though…not trying to defend the dupe, but i didnt know it was @ big w aswell. getting one now.

        • Don't know why I even need to explain this but I deliberately put the 'so' in that statement so it wouldn't sound too direct and confrontational. Just move on mate.

You really, really don't want to use cheap SATA drive with RAID 5. In a nutshell the RAID5 will spontaneously combust. The explanation is a little long and Google has much to offer.

Essentially RAID5 will turn to mush on a modern, massive array of cheap SATA drive that is not designed with RAID5 in mind and this is due to the way RAID5 works and the read/write reliability of these drives. There are other RAIDs better suited although have lower storage yield or higher computational overhead and other drives better suited to RAID5. Choose wisely.

  • Sold out?

  • Seems like the online offer is already over - pick up only on my end…$109 option only :( limited stocks in my area

Time to trawl bigw.com.au and post another non bargain dupe.

  • Just go to officeworks and get the seagate 2tb ext drive for $99, usb 3 and probably faster drive
