Not butane, but a cold-weather mix.
If its not freezing, just use a $5 adapter (ebay/aliexpress/etc), and the regular, much cheaper butane cannisters.

You can also get a simple device to refill the screw-on canisters from the cheaper butane-only ones. Makes no difference to the burner, except in cold conditions.

can you get a little stand so you could prop it up safely? my stove screws onto top and i coudlnt cook on one of those canisters

Balancing a Jetboil stove on a tall butane canister?

That doesn't sound safe to me, especially if cooking on uneven ground. A bit of wind and the stove would topple over.

      • +1

You can refill the screw-on ones with the cheap butane canisters with an adaptor.

    • +2

I remember when these were 5 pack for $5
      Then 4 for $5
      Now 3 for $4.50
      Soon 2 for $5
      later 1 for $5

These are butane propane mix not the El cheapo butane canisters which you can still get super cheap

    • +1

      This is great.

    • That uses propane rather than butane so you'll have to get this instead.

      • Yeah. I got that and it doesn't last long before it goes empty. Eyeing this conversion as this should let me connect the torch to an lpg tank instead. That is the plan anywayz.

If a small canister makes it more convenient to use, you can also refill those from a bbq gas tank with an adaptor.

          • @eug: Thanks, I think. Is this really safe to do with those non-lrefillable canisters?

            • @pacificstorm: Should be OK for a few refills. Just don't store them indoors or in an enclosed space, the same as a regular refillable BBQ gas tank.
What worries me more is some of that gear could let people put propane (higher pressure) into a butane canister.

            • @pacificstorm:

Thanks, I think. Is this really safe to do with those non-lrefillable canisters?

I'd say it's safe for at least a few refills. Some people screw and unscrew the tank from e.g. a propane blowtorch easily tens or even a hundred times (you're not meant to store them screwed in to each other in case of impact) giving the valve a good workout with no issues. The canister itself will definitely be fine as long as it isn't too old and hasn't been damaged.

  • How do you C&C? It shows to check inside the store only, even tough it shows the stores around me have stock.

    • Amazing how at my store, after hours, it went from "in stock" (2 hrs after closing time) to sold out (5 hrs after closing time).

There was no option for me to order C&C to that store.

That's a shame if this means they're going to stop selling them, they were less than half the price of the next cheapest brand.

Bunnings has for same as original price ($4.50): https://www.bunnings.com.au/gasmate-230g-power-fuel-iso-buta…

      • +1

Oh that's great! I don't think I would have missed that when I was last shopping for these, so I think it might be a new price/product for Bunnings. Those canisters are $10.95 everywhere else. I suspect Bunnings would have been doing an implicit pricematch to Kmart (like they do when Aldi has a sale on tools), so I wonder if that price will go away if Kmart stops selling the cheap canisters.

        • +1

I bought them at that price at Bunnings around Sept last year from memory so I think it's normal price. Camping shops are much more expensive.

          • +2

@turbodude: Pricehipster has the earliest data for it showing up in August last year, and a bushwalk.com forum post called them out as new in October. I don't actually hike enough for the price difference to matter, but curiosity got the better of me.

  • I like the smaller 100g canisters for day hikes with the Jetboil.

Crazy that they go for around $14 or $15 for the branded 100g Jetboil Jetpower product at most retailers when these are $4.

    • +1

Jetboil need to make money somehow. Their cooking/coffee items are one time purchase.
I just buy kmart ones for my jetboil.

Refill the small canisters from the bigger ones using a refill adapter. Use a scale to ensure you don't overfill and you can take exactly how much gas you need.

  • Quick question, is it possible to use one of these canisters for a portable bbq?
If so which adapter would I need and propane or butane or either?

    • Portable BBQ you would need an EN417 to POL or LCC connector depending in how new your BBQ is. Also you would find these would empty really fast through a BBQ.

If you're talking about a little cassette stove burner that you get for $50 from BCF, you can also adapt these but you'd need an EN417 to whatever the fitting it for butane canisters.

Either way you're probably spending more on the adapter then you are saving. I am getting the adapter so that my next road trip I can use the same gas cylinders for my jet boil and my little gas stove and not need to carry two kinds.

      • Thanks for your reply, I was thinking more for portable/picnic use of a Weber baby Q so i don’t have to lug around a heavy LPG bottle.

I’ve seen photos of Weber’s in the states with small screw-on gas canisters and wondering if something like that is possible?

        • +1

I would look to get a small gas bottle. They come in smaller sizes than 9kg (the typical servo size). They wouldn't need an adaptor and are still big enough to cook a meal. Something like the gas cylinder above would run out in a few mins in a babyQ.

Here is a link to a 4kg bottle just under half the size of the usual bottles. It has the new LCC27 fitting which is the new standard for all gas BBQs in Australia. Which I believe is backwards compatible with the old POL connector.

No…. Kmart is going to clearance on these. They were the best value around for this style.

Can sbd confirm or tell me what I'm doing wrong?

It says "This popular item has sold out online" and "Home delivery: Click & Collect only" - fair enough. It also says that I can only C&C from my local store and even gives me "Next day pick up on orders after 12pm. Please wait for an email confirming the item is ready to collect."

But how do I do C&C? There's no option to add it to the cart because of the "This popular item has sold out online".

    • +1

I have a big blue Add to bag button directly under the price/reviews.

      • Thanks.

I tried in different browsers, but the big blue "Add to bag" button turns into "This popular item has sold out online" the second the website finishes loading. Oh well.

    • Yes, you need to change store locations and find one with stock, then it is click and collect only.

      • +1

Yeah, you'd think so. When I search the store via "See store info & check stock nearby" button in "How to get it? NEW" section, in the pop up it displays "In stock" for most of the stores near me. When I change to one of those stores, the product page shows "Out of stock" and there's no C&C available (even though it also says "Click & Collect only" for the product). I can go back to the pop up and it's still "In stock" there.

Works correctly for some stores. What a software marvel!

        • Glitchy system and maybe not worth the hassle, just pay $1.50 more at Bunnings if they have stock maybe?

          • +1

@ozhunter68: Yeah, just letting everyone know once it comes to - with all the respect to the OP - more serious bargains.

            Thanks!

            • @pizzaguy: I was able to Click & Collect 15 of these from Ipswitch Qld but need to drive 160 Klm round trip.

  • +1

I was so keen to finally give my ozb special Kmart knockoff Jetboil a go at Splendour last year, though security nabbed my butane so I've still not used the damn thing. At $3 a pop I might just cook dinner on it tonight for shits and giggles.

    • Haha, I also bought one of those on a trip in Tasmania when I saw one getting sold cheap on clearance for $25 as

was opened. Also have never used it yet as my other smaller simple screw on burner I can put my stovetop coffee maker

on. The one you mention is only designed for the included little pot. I did test itwith gas and it seems to work at least lol.
