super cheap
only $4.79

by default it comes with their stock tracking sim, and software instructions. However you can install it on your own GPS tracking servers, with your own sim, (if you know how to do it as it will be way way cheaper than stock subscription model, like may be $20-60 a year all up I think). Chuck on a Payas you Go sim like amaysim $10 max for sim in 1 year max (if you okay with optus network), or like other telstra network sims as I prefer (personally, $20 max for sim in a year)

then its easy to track your cars, keyrings, suitcase or whatever you want to put it on. Battery life is quite good like 1 month ish.

1 month battery will get old really fast, i have a gps from Monimoto and it lasts minumum 1 year (1 of them is my own gps, the other subscription of ~$80 a year

    • +4

in comments here https://www.pepper.pl/dyskusji/tracker-gps-wanway-tech-s20-p… , someone has replaced with 2x 18650s

      • +2

some even bought it to salvage the battery from it for their other random projects to haha😂

    • It is good for your car where you have a regular power supply.

I put one in my e-bike. Needed an isolated power converter to charge it, or the antennas did not work inside frame.

  • -6

A product killed by the airtag?

    • +7

well this is better than airtag IMO. you need iphones or apple devices for airtag to work. For this one only needs a mobile data connection to the server

    • +3

Not quite as AirTags utilise on Bluetooth technology while this product use 4G.
Both technology have pros and cons so why not use both at the same time.

    • +2

Airtag is more expensive, warns you if an airtag is travelling with you and is disconnected from the owner, and you can have it play a sound to find exactly where it is so you can remove/disable it. They're probably decent for tracking commonly lost/misplaced items, but this makes them almost worthless for tracking something at risk of being stolen - where a GPS tracker has none of those downsides.

      • Agree. Got airtags for escooters, ebike and car. Just annoying the beep when using them as got android.
Do understand why they enabled the warning. Lots of stalkers out there. Hid them inside the stem and other places. At least might be enough time to see location if stolen.
With this good thing is can set if it moves. At least almost instant if someone takes your item. Now just see what sim to use. Currently on payg amaysim. See how much it uses.

    • +2

As soon as you mention Apple their hackles go up. It's kinda funny, just idiotic blind hate.

  • +1

OP, care to share how to get those PAYG prepaid sim's for $20/yr expiry? I know these devices use bugger all data, but what's your real life experience with it?

    • +7

I dont want to get banned for sockpuppetting, due to some random association to that mobile company (if you needed telstra network).
      )
if you want optus network - amaysim $10 for 1 year- https://www.amaysim.com.au/sim-plans/28-day-sim-plans/as-you…

or if you dont like optus like me, (its a sim from one of the three major supermarkets, buy the $5 sim starter kit, then that will expire within 60 days ?? i think, but if you recharge before that 60 day, with a $15 365day Pay As you Go online recharge then you get an additional 365 day expiry, (all up $20 spent))

as far as I know, I dont know any other cheap (aka <$35 ish) 365 day sim Pay As You Go plan other than these two.

      • +2

        Got it!

German if anyone else is curious. I'm putting one of these in every car I own since it's only costing $20/yr

        • dont forget the server cost if any too. (tho i heard getting own traccar server is not too expensive either)

      • Will it use $15 worth of data in a year?

        • +2

This item, No i dont think so of using more than $15 worth of data in 1 year. But you do need to send and receive some sms commands at begining as per the github commands (so you may wanna send those commands of like server change, sim APN change etc. from another sim (so as to not deplete the 365 day sim PYG balance))

          • @USER DC: Has anybody tested one of these to see how much data per month it uses?

      • That amaysim doesn't include data, which will cost you a lot more because of the weird way mobile networks charge for data. No way is $20 a year.

        • +2

Kindly please read content on website before making judgement

          " Data
Data charged at 5c/1MB or $51.40/1GB. Pay $10 for AYG plan. 365 day expiry.
Or add a plan. Plans start from $18/10GB and last for 28 days "

Have already mentioned they are pay as you go plans, they dont come with data or sms or call limits, instead gives you $ amount that is deducted based on usage of stuff

        • @cakesyy Just bought a $11 amaysim starter sim $25 value. Added as PAYG 365 days. See how much it uses. Currently used 37c during setup. Keep it posted here if you want.

            • @xwx: I used the SENALM,OFF# command which according to GitHub turns off “vibration alarm”. Does this actually vibrate or is that just a saying for it quietly sending messages to my SOS phone number I set (my personal number)

          • +1

@Mikael: After a few days of using this hardly any data at all. 50c is used because of the setup process and trying the URL# to retrieve it's location as a text. I am using the free ruhavik app and it works fine. Done 40km.

  • Pair this with a 12v car to 5v usb adaptor, no brainer way to protect your vehicle/assets.

    • would it be sketchy to always keep the battery connected to power? or only when ignition is on

      • I would suspect that the current draw of this would be very low. Considering alot of people wire their dashcam to constant power, so they can run in "parked mode", I'd have to think that it wouldn't be sketchy to do that.

Of course, if your car is parked up and not driven for months at a stretch, then it might become an issue…

        • +1

you use a voltage monitor to disconnect the power if its too low fyi

      • Yeah it's literally a fat cylindrical Aliexpress battery inside.

    • I have mine alawys hidden in somewhere it is less visible (and power alawys connected so dont have to worry about recharging)

your best option IMO is run a hard wire connection to it, somewhere hidden (you can run wires from cigerette lighter port or the battery directly itself too) if you dont wanna worry about charging it.

Otherwise once a month or so just take it out and recharge it and put it back

  • How do you setup your own server, can't see that into on Github

    • Traccar - uses GT-06 protocol meaning you need to have port 5023 open

      • great, seems traccar even has a docker image
probably worth trying to run it with my Synology NAS with docker

        • I'm going to try it on docker when my GPS unit arrives :)

          • @bdl: https://github.com/traccar/traccar-docker?tab=readme-ov-file ???

would appreciate if you could share the docker compose file ? or instructions here for others.
            thanks

            • +1

@USER DC: The instructions under "Container create example:" on the page you quoted looks to be the easiest plus it will be kept up to date by the author

            • +1

@USER DC: I also found this docker-compose for traccar with a mysql backend.

              https://github.com/marcelmaatkamp/docker-traccar-mysql/tree/…

              • @bdl: interesting, looks like just need to create a new user traccar in mysql and it will automatically hook up
however, just concerning that using non-official docker might loss official update if the repo author not keep the image up-to-date
this repo last update was 4 years ago

Start MySQL which will automatically create a database named 'traccar' with user 'traccar' and password 'traccar'

            • +3

@USER DC: I just did the following for my docker setup
              1. create a folder structure for your files. I have a traccar folder, in that i have logs and data, so:
              traccar
              traccar/logs
              traccar/data
              2. download the traccar.xml as per the github instructions, put that in the traccar folder (I don't have any gps devices yet, so no idea what I need to customise here yet)
              3. use the following docker-compose.yml (I mapped the web interface to port 8090)
              services:
              traccar:
              container_name: traccar
              image: traccar/traccar:latest
              ports:
              - 8090:8082
              - 5000-5150:5000-5150
              - 5000-5150:5000-5150/udp
              volumes:
              - /path-to-your-docker/traccar/logs:/opt/traccar/logs
              - /path-to-your-docker/traccar/data:/opt/traccar/data
              - /path-to-your-docker/traccar/traccar.xml:/opt/traccar/conf/traccar.xml:ro
              restart: unless-stopped

  • Great deal. Looks like all are claimed now.

    • +3

wait for 15 mins ish may be ?? some people dont buy it and lightening price deal comes back on

      • +1

Good call, refreshed and managed to get one. Cheers!

        • now officially OOS on lightening deal

  • +1

Boo! Missed out on the deal…

    • keep refreshing the page, sometimes people only add to cart and dont buy it

  • FYI, there are newer firmware versions of these devices now in circulation that appear to prevent the changes necessary to move them to your own servers.

    • can you flash older firmware on with a TTL adaptor?

  • +1

Got one from last deal. Not set up yet. Ozbargain way lol.

    • +2

      Buy now, use never. Haha.

      • So true. Might give it a go and get it up and running with another sim. Arghh. Got this one back in August.

  • Showing $15.99 and a 20% coupon now.

    Normal price?

    • +1

Twas a lightning deal. So yeah we were late to the party. Haha

      • $83 after 50% off on their AliExpress store, wtf?

My bad, different model with LTE. I think same model is about $40 on Ali. Usually this kind of stuff is cheaper on AliExpress due to slower shipping vs. Amazon fulfilment. Not always I guess.

  • +12

okay since this had been really popular IMO, I'll also share the sms commands to send to the sim inside the tracker, I ran with help of someone and github. Also change your sim for this to a non PAY AS YOU GO sim, as you probably dont want the sms costs to be deducted from the the pay as your balance

    HASHTAGSERVER (#SERVER)

Reply will be WayWanTech's own server - you probably want to change that

    LOCKIP,WWDSS20,UNLOCK#

unlocks your server lock from waywantech to another server, reply should be UNLOCKIP_OK

    SERVER,0YOURTRACCAROROTHERGPSTRACKERIPADDRESSHERE,PORTNUMBER,0#

reply will be SERVER_OK (meaning server changed successfully and working fine), to double check run #SERVER again, port number is 5023 for traccar

    IMEI#

Gets your device IMEI in reply IMEI:IMEINUMBERHERE

    APN#

reply by default will be like Currently in use APN:linksnet…- You probably want to change it to telstra/optus/vodafone's APN, to change use below

    APN,UNLOCK#

checks if apn is locked or unlocked, by default should be APN IS LOCKED! to unlock send below

    LOCKAPN,WWDSS20,UNLOCK#

this should unlock you to change apn, and reply with UNLOCKAPN_OK

For telstra (boost, etc.) - https://www.telstra.com.au/business-enterprise/support/chang…

    APN,telstra.wap#

For optus (amaysim etc.) - https://www.optus.com.au/for-you/support/answer?id=1378

    APN,yesinternet#

    For Vodafone(kogan etc.) - https://www.vodafone.com.au/support/device/apn-settings

    APN,live.vodafone.com#

reply should be APN_OK, The terminal will restart after 30 seconds! If you unsure what your APN should be then insert your sim to a 4G or 5G phone, and check its network settings to what it changes the default apn to, that should be your APN

    • is the unlocking persistent between reboots of the device?

      • +1

yes, given you unlocked it once, got confirmation (that device is unlocked), and then did not send a command to lock it again.

it should remain unlocked. Regarding APN i am unsure honestly, it may or may not change with changing of the sims.

However if you got problems in its signal, try turning it off, plugging it in the power, and then turn on. it could be a battery low issue possibly

          • @xwx: would really depend whether it saves the new apn to nvram or whether it just changes it for that particular boot.

          • @xwx: stays unlocked, even keeps the server details after doing a factoryall#

I had to reset the apn after doing a factoryall#

I just now have to figure out how much data it uses so I can get a prepaid sim to match

              • @xwx: That helps heaps - thankyou :) I'm guessing the vodafone 250gb sim is overkill :)

        • I just tried a sim swap from woolworths/everyday to aldi (they both use mdata.net.au), and the apn setting stayed the same after swap

          • @bdl: THEY BOTH use Telstra network, and hence telstra apn

            • @USER DC: I understand that but I was seeing whether the APN info reset during a sim swap. it didn't.

  • shows 15.99 to me

  • How much is it to setup a server?

    • free. see above.

  • I have one of these in my car. After going through the unlock steps & installing a new Sim, I plugged it into a new USB port I had wired into the car and now it's tracked at all times.

I didn't go the 3rd party tracking server though. I just access my tracker through SMS. It's quite simple to send a simple command to the tracker & it sends back either GPS coordinates or a Google Maps link depending on the command I send it.

    • +1

I didn't go the 3rd party tracking server though. I just access my tracker through SMS. It's quite simple to send a simple command to the tracker & it sends back either GPS coordinates or a Google Maps link depending on the command I send it.

Depending on how many times you message, your Pay As you Go balance might deplete a lot faster

      • I have a prepaid SIM card that has unlimited SMS and comes with a few GB of data a month. I always know where my car is (single person here), so the only real time Ive used it is to demonstrate to friends how simple it was (for me).

  • Finally set this up since last deal. Put in boost sim. Had to use this as other one I got was esim arghh. Unlocked device. Inserted apn. When sending URL# to it. Getting reply with Google maps. Now just to find a cheap plan.

  • I can’t believe I paid $7.99 with a 50% coupon last week

  • Price has gone back up to $15.99
Is it worth it at that price?

    • +5

I mean sure (only if you can get it working on your own server ), but honestly if you just wait a fortnight or so, it will probably be on sale again.

then again if actually tracking item asap is your concern then an extra $8-12 should be not a big concern to you.

    • Back to $6.4 now

      • Thanks, grabbed one.

  • -1

Does anybody know if Flip Mobile asks for ID to activate when buying their mobile plans?

  • Does the included sim card have free data? :D

    • +1

only if you are using their subscription with

their listing kinda advertises as you paying their subscription service for data in their sim

      • Oh i was going to rip it out prior to booting the device for the first time (and use my own data sim after changing the APN), just wondering if the included one was good for anything…

        • hmm IDK to be honest

i did not try it honestly.

but also that being said to use their sim, you will need to know their apn to change correctly (should only be vodafone/optus/telstra tho)

          try and let us know

  • +1
  • Mine arrived today. Before I go and buy a SIM card, does anyone know if this can integrate into Home Assistant somehow? I already run a HA server and don't really want to fluff around with a separate server.

    • no, you will need to use traccar. It is available as an add on for HA https://github.com/hassio-addons/addon-traccar

      • @bdl what I understand from this is that I can install the Traccar add-on and nothing else is needed? Presume I have to expose ports to the internet and have a public IP for the GPS device to communicate with? I'm behind a CGNAT but have a CloudFlare tunnel for Google Assistant. May need to look into that option.

        • Yes you will need a static ip for traccar to listen on
          1) Install the add on (it's basically just running a docker instance of the server, I believe)
          2) Forward relevant ports. You'll see some online documentation saying tcp/udp 5000-5150 is needed, I only have one device so did the default udp/tcp for 5023 and it's working fine)
          3) Integrate traccar with HA (I'm assuming.. I have traccar on a vps for testing, I haven't integrated with my HA install yet) https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/traccar/

when you config the tracker you can set it to use IP or DNS name
          SERVER,0,ipofserver,port,0#
          or
          SERVER,1,dnsnameofserver,port,0#

      • Did I just block my device by plugging it in to charge? 😪

          • @xwx: I roughly removed the OG SIM because locking devices p*sses me off :D

          • @xwx: Looks like I'm ok. I think plugging it in turned it on but not locked. Chucked in a Boost Sim and unlocked.

  • Thanks to everyone on this thread for your snippets of info, really made it easy to set up

  • +1

Wow these use bugger all data, testing on Aldimobile. I hope Amaysim data counting is similar.

      • bahahaha

    • Got a $11 amaysim kit at Woolworths. Got me $25 payg. Got $24.48 left..that is after the sms.setup. so used 3c in almost a week. Done 90km
