nice deal, I wasn't searching for 32GB as usually they are much more expensive - that is a good deal indeed.

  • Here's a somewhat beefier model, also on special. Not sure if it's worth the extra $200, but worth a mention:

  • Whats the go with these little guys? Are they just a personal workstation option or do these things get used enterprise too? I've always assumed they'd be a hotbox outside of Office 365 but these all have pretty capable specs assuming the mobile processor can actually ball

    • An equivalent enterprise box (nuc/dell/lenovo/? mini) are about $1k
Personally would pay the extra with onsite warranty, then go with an unknown brand.

      • we've used Lenovo M720q (Core i7-8700T, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD) 'tiny' computers in a business sense for nearly the past 4 years (over 100 sites). They 'dock' into a section behind the compatible Lenovo monitor and they've handled O365 apps, the ERP cloud based app and other general use quite happily in a business setting.

I have an N100 I use at home for the same tasks (MS teams, teamviewer, o365, pronto etc.) as well as my personal browsing, youtube (1440p monitor) and light gaming, but it is on almost 24/7 as it handles nightly torrents and usenet (and above all is nearly silent). Some people use N100 chipset mini PCs as plex servers and they handle transcoding quite happily as they have hardware encoding and decoding.

BEWARE! Recently bought a KAMRUI and installed WIN11 from scratch to ensure no unwanted spyware etc. I obtained the Windows key prior to reinstalling Windows, all good, and then after a couple of days it asked for Activation - used the same key that shipped with the system, and it was not valid - BEWARE!

    • how did you obtain the win11 key? I tried multiple apps and none of them could find the key. Which model?

Cool, just use massgravel's scripts on GitHub.

    • I thought the Windows licence was attached to the mono, so it shouldn't matter if you throw a fresh copy on it???

  • Guess these are ok for some light gaming on 720p?

    • I've posted comments on the net guy's channel multiple times now with the link to the issue being RESOLVED back in january - britec and the net guy are making click bait content and removing comments from users linking to the info at the acemagic website - this issue was identified and fixed by Acemagic back in January - www.acemagic.com/blogs/about-ace-mini-pc/acemagic-apologizes…

      • So what if it's resolved.

This should never have happened in the first place

        • -1

Agreed, I get the impression ACEMAGIC is simply running damage control with their apology. They would have allowed shit like this to continue (happily!) if word did not get out.

This absolutely should not have happened in the first place, and I wouldn't put it past them to try and bury something else inside those units.

          • @anonym: the damage control was posted on January 12th 2024 - almost a month before any of the weekend content from britec09, the net guy or gamers nexus.

            • -1

@gizmomelb: Explain this article then, where the reviewer received a second, supposedly "new" unit and without "the same dodgy problems"… Only to discover the same issues as the first unit they received.

Bad internal communication or bad attention to detail?

Either way, ACEMAGIC has only succeeded in proving that they cannot be trusted to know what the heck is going on with their own products, and you insisting that they have fixed their ways simply because of a simple announcement on their company website is ignorant at best and malignant at worst.

At the very least, it is YOUR duty of care to warn unsuspecting OzBargainers of the risks involved when purchasing a rebranded ACEMAGIC product, and not attempt to stamp or quash out any valid concern or dissent raised by others.

Not everyone is going to go to the trouble of reinstalling Windows when purchasing a PC. I didn't - not until I saw the article by Windows Central, and by that time it would already be far too late.

              • @anonym: anonym I have nothing to do with Acemagic - I have posted multiple times to RE-INSTALL THE O/S YOURSELF. Because I don't trust ANY pre-installed operating system (as said multiple times, I re-installed my Lenovo laptop when I bought it) as being trust worthy.

As for the article you linked - try reading it again, it was updated: "UPDATE Jan 16, 2024: A representative told me that AceMagic has made an announcement regarding the browser issues I experienced with the AD08 and S1 mini PCs:

“The issue affecting web search stemmed from ACEMAGIC’s previous supplier of bulk installation systems. The supplier independently added pre-installed software without ACEMAGIC’s explicit authorization. In response, ACEMAGIC has severed ties with this supplier and has transitioned to a new partner, ensuring strict adherence to transparency and user-centric values.”"

THAT is information based on the apology that Acemagic posted on their website on January 12th - where they linked to a video on how to fix the issue and had links to clean o/s installs if people wanted to re-image.

                https://www.acemagic.com/blogs/about-ace-mini-pc/acemagic-ap…

I get that it's hard to type with one hand on a torch and the other on a pitchfork, but it would be nice if people could 'do their own research' like they were so keen to do in 2019-22

                • -1

@gizmomelb: You never mentioned the risk of these PCs in this post until someone pointed it out in the comments, which you did your damndest to shoot down. That's enough to raise my suspicions with your motives.

Edit: As for the statements from ACEMAGIC, damage control statements are worthless. Any company worth their salt would put out statements like these when they get caught out.

Trustworthy or not, they do not have the quality control processes in place to prevent things like this from happening, and you are touting REBRANDED units where the layperson may not recognize as being affected.

That's on you as the person who recommended this deal. ESPECIALLY when you have full awareness of the risks involved.

        • @kogi Agreed. however it did and it has happened previously to ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo - they didn't go out of business did they? The manufacturer at least identified it and fixed the issue.

Hardware makers outsource the duplication of their drives and it can happen to the big companies as well as the small companies. It would extremely unlikely that malware was purposely installed on any device by the manufacturer as that's a sure fire way to kill their company. As per the Dell, HP, Lenovo malware incidents it was introduced to the stock image that was duplicated and then the drive was installed to the laptop / device. Instead of the throwing the hands in the air and raising the pitchforks the various content creators could have been more useful and shown how to test to see if 'your' device is compromised and what to do about it.

I've said it before (and I believe I said it when I posted the initial link for this) NEVER trust any device with a pre-installed operating system - whether it's a name brand or unknown brand. Set the device up initially with a local account (don't connect to the internet at all and windows 11 will give you the option to make a local account instead of using your microsoft account) and then see if you can use something like magic jelly bean to find the windows 11 key - so you can then re-install and do a clean install using the same key. If the key isn't a legit one, well it shouldn't come as a big surprise when the entire device costs less than a windows 11 licence in the first place.

  • posting misinformation really pisses me off.

  • Got one this week for $460 (flash sale, only 5 units).

Works great, however I cant seem to get decent download speeds with the wifi card (Shows as a Realtek 8852BE wifi 6 PCIE NIC in device manager)

Downloading office and adobe software, it tops out at 17mbit. Plug in my 3 year old TPLink USB adapter and Im getting 60mbit solid with spikes up to 75mbit.

Other than that Im pretty happy with it.

    • An update: Looks like its some kind of slow/hobbled implemetation of wifi 6.

The 17mbit wifi was on the 2.4ghz network.

If I connect to the 5ghz network, the speed tops out at 34mbit.

Still about 50% slower than it should be. Will keep trouble shooting.

      • Linux Kernel 6.6.2 had a fix for this chipset to work at it's full speed, don't know offhand if there is a windows driver update sorry. (also if using windows please tell me you formatted and re-installed from scratch, just to be sure?).

EDIT: this may help, deprecating the driver to an older version helped this person - https://superuser.com/questions/1734362/windows-11-slow-inte…
