    Any mesh points?

  • +21

Good price but terrible hardware, these are buggy & constantly need resetting.

I suffered them for 18m, moved to a TPLINK mesh and all my issues went away.

    • I've personally found them ok, better than Orbi at least

      • The wired connections on all my Orbi's have been very shit. Randomly disconnecting or disconnecting at a specific time every day. A firmware update fixed it for a while until the next firmware update came and broke it. Heaps of complaints online about random disconnections.

        TP-Link Deco has been flawless.

        • My Orbi's were doing that too, and phoning home multiple times a second for no reason. Ended up moving to Deco as well.

        • Which TP-Link system do you use ? I have the Orbi RBK350 with a few satellites… When I was with ABB 250MB plan I had very little issues… Went to Superloop 1GB Plan & now I'm having issues… I'm a bit of a Noob when it comes to this stuff so not sure if it's the internet or my WIFI Setup ???

My experience with Google Nest Wifi has been great when it comes to reliability and wifi signal. After a few years I had a period of a few months where the mesh point disconnected weekly, but it just went away so I assume an automatic firmware update fixed it. The issue I had is that the functionality is very limited and you can only change settings through the Google Home app on your phone. There is no way to connect locally via a web browser. If your internet connection is down, there is no way to access the router since it needs the cloud. I therefore changed to a Unifi setup. But for simple networks providing internet at home, these are great.

      They are fine ish…..

If it works, it works well. However, when it doesn’t, it’s definitely not easy to fix and their home app is rather basic and very frustrating to use and unhelpful. Don’t get me wrong, basic is fine when they get the basic absolutely right, I’m all for plug and play then forget. However, the app which controls the mesh (only way to interact) lack of refinement or options to deal with issues. It will just frustrate you….

I wouldn’t want to get another one, but that’s just my personal experience.

My experience exactly, sadly after that I tried Amazon Eero, would not have believed anything could be worse but Amazon proved me wrong. Now on Asus and it has been flawless.

    • After encountering a specific problem, I searched the web and apparently it's very widespread - my wifi cuts out for 1-10 seconds at a time five times a day on average. It's not a huge deal, but for some things it's infuriating (games requiring internet connection)
I saw the warnings when researching for the initial purchase but you never know what to take at face value and what could be the gripe of some random shitkicker.
I wish I went with TPLink (for what it's worth)

  • also interested in an extra mesh point - any deals?

    • I've got an extra point I want to sell. Bridge mode doesn't work with mesh on these so I'm looking to get rid of mine

      • Bridge mode is usually what you do if you have a router downstream, for example bridge your ISP modem-router to the Nest Wifi router. I assume what you want to do is the opposite and use the Nest wifi as wireless access points.

        • A lot of wifi routers (including the nest) eschew seperate AP and Bridge modes. Bridge mode on the nest turns off the routing but keeps the wifi AP on which is what I want because I have an upstream openwrt router I use for my LAN. Unfortunately unlike the deco and other wifi mesh systems they don’t let you use the mesh points in bridge mode.
I’m using a workaround where I keep it in router mode but set the dhcp server to 3 addresses (and reserve one for my phone and 2 for the mesh points) and then unplug the WAN and plug my upstream router into the LAN and that works ish. But it’s unstable and the mesh points will disconnect randomly so I just want to get rid of the mesh points

  • I'm after an extra mesh point if anyone's seen any deals/keen to split a pack?

    • I've got an extra mesh point I want to sell. Bridge mode doesn't work with mesh on these so I'm looking to get rid of my points

      • How much are you selling for? I’m keen.

  • I have the old Google wifi. Just for a sense of feedback. What wifi mesh system would people recommend getting. Sounds like Google is good but not great overall.

      Asus

I've always had the least issues, best general stability / reliability with Asus. It's almost too boring lol.

    • I've had bad experiences with Google but good experiences with TP-Link, my family use the tenda mesh and have no complaints. I've moved now to Fritz, bought the repeater as well and it works really well but any of the new fritz boxes, I think similar to Asus, can function as repeaters.

it's not made clear in many descriptions so in case anyone is wondering. these are the older dual-band WiFi 5 model.

new Nest WiFi Pro uses Tri-band and WiFi 6E.

Dual-band relies on one of those 2 bands being used for the mesh so it slows it down. Tri-band uses 6Ghz for mesh exclusively and frees up both 2.4 and 5Ghz bands for full speeds. e.g. better for future proofing.

  • total home modem noob here

Am using the Optus (yeah I know) provided "Ultra WiFi Modem Gen 2" and have the Orbi RBK50 AC3000. Orbi has been playing up and was what the best options/alternattives to improve performance/wi fi coverage?

  • Recently got FTTP, and I get 450Mbps on this, then I plug in a point and standing in the same spot it becomes 120Mbps 😭 so I’m only using the router and it feels so silly.

    • Will buy your point off you?

    • Is the 450Mbps using wifi or are you connected to the router via ethernet cable?

      • Wi-Fi! Cable gives 950Mbps
Router drops to higher 300s when further away and even less when even further, as expected

  • I've got these and had no issues. Easy to setup, and if you're not a tinkerer, should be great for you.

  • I have used these for the last 2 years without any issues. Great for someone without any technical skills

Great wifi, using it from last 3 years
    No issues at all

  • Looking for just a mesh point. Happy to split with someone
