Much better than the $13 Belkin from OW.

  • why is DD-WRT so important ?

    • DD-WRT gives you the flexibility to extend the functionality of the router. It is not important if you just want to use the router as is.

      • can it improve performance ?

        • +2

Potentially. Although I suspect it would have more of an impact on stability. I use openwrt (similar idea) on a router I have here and it's crashed maybe once in the last 9 months and I can't think of the last time I had a dropout on the wireless.

Depends on how much is baked into the silicon and how much is written in software. For example, some routers can change antenna output power but their firmware haven't the setting. DD-WRT can unlock it and improve transmission range.

        • Thanks…

Will keep this in mind then when i'm looking around for one in the future…

  • What type of range would i get If I flash DD-WRT firmware ?

    • i wouldnt say much better than stock

mine has ddwrt and its about the same as stock for range but i havent upped the power… which doesnt have much effect without antennas

this router is very good with ddwrt i admit

      • Mine improved by about 10 meters, and is just as stable (though i have fortnightly resets at 5am programmed in case)

    • You can probably increase the TX power output, but there are also downsides to upping the power beyond to what the hardware is designed for. http://forums.wi-fiplanet.com/showthread.php?10535-TX-Power-…

What frequency is this at? 2.4Ghz or 5.8?

Out of stock at all NSW branches….. ah

  • I've got the Non-802.11n version of this router as a wireless bridge with dd-wrt and thinking of grabbing this as a mini 'upgrade' of sorts. Obviously, the main router is 802.11n.

To all those that have this revision, how good is it in 802.11n?

    • +1

      its good

i dont have much issue maintaining 240-270 on common cards

      stability in ddwrt is fine

  • so dd-wrt users, can you create wireless bridges with a few of these? I can get my linksys to act as a client, but I can't get two 615's to talk to each other.

    • In my experience, Atheros chipsets don't work very well as client bridge / repeater bridge. Not saying it's not possible, I've just found the Broadcom based routers to be more reliable as client/repeater bridge.
I have found that the most reliable method for getting two Atheros based routers to bridge two networks of the same subnet is to use WDS.

      • some people reckon they can do it

i trolled thru the ddwrt forums and it seems a workaround is that its on a seperate subnet which isnt my definition of 'client/repeater bridge'

anyway it's a $22 router so cant expect too much

        • I got a couple of DIR615's in the last special ($22 at HN I think). One is my AP and one acting as a client bridge. Only problem is the bridge doesn't pass multi-cast so you can't necessarily see DLNA servers etc on the client side of it from the rest of the network.

        • Yes it can be done. but it's neither always straightforward nor always reliable with Atheros. I have done it with a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND. It worked sometimes but then strangely stopped working intermittently. I then set it up as a WDS Station, and another of the same model as a WDS AP, and it works beautifully, and a decent strong signal to my neighbour's house without anything but the stock antennas.

  • If only these had 8MB flash…

  • The E4 or E5 version does not have the wireless speed selection. It defaults only to 150 Mbps and cannot be changed to 300 Mbps.
