Decent router, has dual 10Gbit ports. Not an all time low, but close to it.
US Stock.

Not my cup of tea, but others were going for the $1100 25Gbps version so thought I would post it.
25Gbps?
Will this handle my 100/25 plan ?
Very overkill for 100/25 lol
lol
~ $100 router should be able to handle NBN 100/25 !
$40 aliexpress special will do the trick
Is the $40 Aliexpress better than the used Telstra Smart 2 router? I find the Telstra Smart 2 to be very reliable basic router for those who don't need WiFi6
You have to provide your own launch system because this sits in a low earth orbit
I would look at the $1100 25Gbps model
Yeap. Future proofing ;)
For when you're an alien on earth and need a WAN connection back to the mothership
Never ever buying another Asus router whether AX88U, this, or whatnot. Connection just so unreliable.
I have the AX88U has been rock solid last four years. Did you move to another brand?
I've also had the ac88u since it launched with basically 0 issues the whole time
Needs more antennas
Reminder - do NOT buy overseas routers..
They are signficantly powerlimited due to local regulations, comapred to the Australian enabled models..
Isnt it the other way around? lol
Thought that was UK models?
And German
Citation needed
from memory US model 5Ghz is stronger, 2.4Ghz is weaker, same available channels
ALSO US models are region locked due to FCC regulation other countries may not have locks and you can select Australia from the admin control panel interface
the hardware is the same, just power/channel limits that installing different firmware doesn't seem to resolve on the routers i tried
also if you live in a populated area or near something that you could interfere maybe airport higher risk of knock on door but i never heard of that actually happening for wifi
recently purchased used mesh routers that were compatible once i set my australian synology routers to US, i live rural in middle of nowhere so 🤷
It's the UK/EU sourced routers you don't want to buy. You want US/AU/CN routers
Correct.
AU vs US: (bold = winner)
Feature | AU Model | US Model |
---|---|---|
Max Tx Power (2.4GHz) | ~20 dBm (100mW) | ~30 dBm (1W) |
5GHz DFS Channels | Full access (DFS required) | Full access |
6GHz Band (Wi-Fi 6E/7) | Indoor only, max EIRP 24 dBm (250 mW) | Full access, higher EIRP (30–36 dBm) |
Regulatory Body | ACMA (AU) | FCC (USA) |
AU vs UK/EU:
Feature | AU Model | UK/EU Model |
---|---|---|
Max Tx Power (2.4GHz) | ~20 dBm (100mW) | ~18–20 dBm |
5GHz DFS Channels | Full access (DFS required) | Limited access, more DFS restrictions |
6GHz Band (Wi-Fi 6E/7) | Indoor only, max EIRP 24 dBm (250 mW) | Access restricted, lower EIRP, 24 dBm (250 mW) |
Regulatory Body | ACMA (AU) | Ofcom / CE (UK/EU) |
Verdict:
US routers will almost always outperform AU models under the same conditions but AU models are just fine. Avoid UK/EU stock.
Would the ~ $300 ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX6000 be much better value for money
Yes if you don't need wifi 7. That deals ended hasn't it?
please dont buy Asus at these over inflated prices, their prices does not reflect their performance, or lack thereof.
IMO This company has very poor RnD, QC, and horrible customer service support.
Over the last 15 years, I've purchased almost every high end Asus device you can think of, and if there is one take away is that Asus has great idea's and styling, but very poor execution, esp on the software/drivers side.
In networking alone, I've had 4 routers from Asus, all of them were unreliable in some particular way. For ex the ROG rapture GT-AC5300 ($600) would just randomly drop connection every so often, requiring you to reboot it. The replacement would sometimes forget a bunch of settings and reset itself. another wouldnt detect certain devices to certain channels, but the asus router prior had no prob. overall frustrating experience
they would be great, if their stuff worked as intended. I can see they have improved a bit, but I still have more issues with Asus products than most other brands.
Always suggest a solution along with the problem mate. What else do you recommend?
Solution is choose a brand that put all it's resources into one type of product, instead of spreading itself thin over all product categories like Asus does.
Example TP-Link primarily does networking device, so it's far more likely all the company's RnD is put into networking, means you're far more likely to get an end product that is polished with most if not all bugs/issues sorted, or will be in rather quickly.
And if you don't like TP-link due to their obligations other governments?
I thought you were going to say UniFi, not tplink …..
Sometimes people just want to vent, not act as your personal buyer.
I have 1 Asus and it's great, maybe I got lucky? DSL-AX82U
My AC88U has been a solid unit for past 10 years but now Merlin have discontinued updates, Ill have to start looking for something new.
Have to agree, it was a solid unit. I also had an Asus AC88U and was looking at a replacement due to EOL (End of life) firmware updates, also running Merlin Firmware. Was Looking at getting another Asus RT-AX88U Pro, however while looking on the internet came across a site where a lot of disgruntled Asus uses where not happy with Asus with the direction they had gone. They have dropped innovation and gone into marketing and producing products which are overpriced for what they are. Found the Gli Flint2 which had the same specs as the Asus RT-AX88U Pro at less the half the price. Been 15 months now, very happy with my purchase, rock solid with exceptional Wi-Fi in my solid brick home.
@Pashka: I made the exact same choice a month ago - still using my ac88u as a second access point but the flint 2 has been great so far
My view is that you were out of luck, I used to use Netgear -> TP-Link and replaced it 5 years ago with 7 Asus routers in the top of the line for office and home, 6 of them work fine, only 1 was retired after 3 years due to problems.
That was my thought as well at first.
But as years past, no matter the product, Beit it motherboards, GPUs, keyboards etc, I've had more issues with Asus products than I've had with any other big name brands.
It got to the point my partner rolls her eyes whenever I bring another Asus product home. She knows it will likely end up with me cursing the heavens while I have to resolve whatever issue arises in the future.
I also have 2 x Optus ASUS AX5400 (DSL-AX82U) in mesh setup and they are working flawlessly. Some models maybe better than others.
I also found it very useful to do a "hard" factory reset before set up to avoid many problems.
I had frequent drop outs with TP Link mesh routers.
Having said that, I would never buy ASUS routers at their inflated MRP but you find them on offer few times a year.
I agree, Asus laptops lately have not been as reliable as before possibly due to poor build quality.
Totally Agree. I was a Total Asus fan boi but have been disappointed with their offering lately.
I bought an Asus laptop which is now about 16 months old so out of warranty and am having issues with the key board. The laptop is not used for gaming and is only for emails & banking so very light use.
I took out my old Asus laptop that I kept which must be well over 10 years old which I used very heavily and it still works and had no issues with it except I wanted to update.
This old laptop is built like a Sherman Tank, compared to my new one which is very flimsy.
All the other Asus laptops that I have had, the build quality was great.
Will be looking elsewhere for another laptop or whatever but it won’t be Asus.
I've thankfully never had to deal with their customer service, though Ive been using their routers for over 20 years and have only ever had one fail due to lightning.
Recently got a pair of the new BE models, and almost no issues and signal is much stronger than the last group of meshed AX86 pros i had.
HOWEVER, when family ask what they should get themselves, if they don't want to spend the money, I also think TP-Link are great and are quite stable as well.
Looks like baby version of Asus ROG Rapture GT-BE98
Does this have MediaTek Filogic chipsets?
Would like to know for OpenWRT.
Would rather buy a mesh system for this price? Like TP BE65?
What will be the cons having overseas model? Any limitations?
See my tabled comment above
I cant look at these without wanting to build more Obelisks of Light.
Thanks Hell March just starts playing in my head.
who has 10Gbps internet? not me. still have a lowly 1Gbps NBN which is the fastest plan right now.
Wifi 7 has some great features but this beast is overkill. I'm gonna keep using my Wifi 5 dd-wrt/openwrt router…
For those buying this - what are you using this for? do you have 10gbps ethernet in your house and devices?
It says 110volt in amazon product specs. Does it mean it needs voltage converter to use in Australia?
Stupidly expensive!
You would hope it’s decent for that much money!
