Everyone should buy and drive what the hell they want with their money. However, please do your research. Cheaper EVs ARE now seeing issues with the battery quality. Having to ramp up and produce that many cars/batteries in such a short time, it's almost impossible and in the case of China manufactured, probable based on past comparisons.

Here's a recent video showing and explaining. This is not a typical "EVs could burn" post. It's more "Some EVs are made terrible and if bad, the risk could be catastrophic" proceed with caution post. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwhnArkZTu8

Would I park a Tesla, Volvo, VW EV in my house without worrying, yes. Would I park GWM or BYD, hell no. I would never forgive myself for burning down the home/endangering family. Much like comparing a cheap shit Scooter to a branded one and the house fires from the cheap ones. No different and now being backed with video evidence.

Again, not an attack on EVs and also buy what you like. Just please research these brands first.

Watch CNN, ABC, BBC and beware of Chinese EVs. Tesla is safe. Just ignore all the secret under the table compensation pay offs

      • +1

Did you watch? Or read my post? Your response is like this is a conspiracy. It isn't. Its part of the reason insurance companies are increasing premiums. They measure risk. Whilst the recorded risk of fire in an EV is 100x less than a ICE car, it is calculated at a 1400x price difference. Mostly as ICE when burn are out of homes (combustion/heat needed). EV is at homes. Bad charger installs. Damaged batteries. Overcharge failing. Etc. Then a $1m home is now being covered to go with it. Or worse, apartment block/shopping centre.

Not sure why video of actual cars and an facts supporting it with global insurance and reported issues is "pay offs". It's not my fault it happens more in the cheaper made cars.

Plus, this happens all over in many things. Cheaper price = not charity, just cheaper built/parts. So that reduces the longevity, quality etc. Its not linear but it is the reality.

Also, in 2023 three EVs where in fires. One an apartment complex, two homes. The complex fire system helped limit damage. The two homes burnt down but thankfully no deaths. All three fires where not Tesla's. One was BYD. One was an MG and one was a Peugeot. The Peugeot was reported to have been a damaged battery (was in an accident that had cosmetic external damage but apparently then damaged the batteries). The other two were not identifiable as to the reasons and deemed either car or charger.

    • +2

Not sure why you're getting down voted here. This is the most unbiased comment in the entire post.

      • +1

Appreciate that. I just assume brand advocates who don't like the reality that risk exists and thing I'm typically of the "racist" ilk because I singled out two chinese EVs. Yet praised Chinese made Tesla MOdel 3 which even in China outsells these and 3x the cost.

I wouldn't allow a kid of mine to buy a $300 cheap shit E=scooter and charge in the home for this exact reason. Nor allow Temu non C tick 60w USB chargers. Because they can and have caused issues at a far higher rate and risk than alts. No engineer in this space will state "ramping up battery production 2300% in 12 months is possible without cutting corners". People will butcher Tesla for worker conditions ramping production with longer days but seem to accept declines in quality/safety to save money.

Each to their own in my mind. Your money, your family, your risk to assess.

How long do you have to wait for delivery?

  • +4

Well, this is called Ora Good Cat in China. Its retail price actually starts from 100K RMB, which is equivlant to around AUD 21.3K. This "deal" is overpriced by 70% compared to China.

If you look at Tesla Model Y - its retail price starts from 266K RMB in China, which is equivlant to AUD 56.7K. As the same Model Y's sale price in Australia is AUD 65.4K, it's only overpriced by 15.3%.

At the same time, Moday Y is the best-selling EV in China market, whereas Ora Good Cat is ranked #26.

    • -6

Do you buy rice in Australia and think man I’m paying 50% more than in China?

      Standards are different

      • +2

Unfortunately, it’s the opposite. Kirkland Signature Thai Hom Mali Jasmine Rice 22.7kg costs $49.95 at Costco. A similar quality jasmine rice would cost more than $70 in a Chinese market.

Local rice costs around $20 per 20kg, but you don’t really want to have it on an everyday basis.

I would argue that EV prices will come down further as more competitors enter the market (e.g., smartphone manufacturers).

      • I'm basically saying that if you buy a Model Y, you are paying 15% more than in China; if you buy this so-called "deal", you are paying 70% more than in China. Both cars are manufactured in China and shipped from China anyway.

Ive followed one or two of these things now. The positioning of the tail/brake light assemblies is dreadful. How in the hell they passed ADRs I'll never know.

    • +2

Same goes for Kia Sorentos with their brake lights in the lower bumper.

  • 中国💪

  • Looks like they just ripped off the design of a Mini Cooper lol

  • Looks nice outside, cheapest model leaves a lot to be desired, looks very plain, empty. Still happy with my ford Puma. Is the battery also under 7 years warranty? I wondered how bad the range has to get to get the battery replaced under warranty. I'm pretty sure range will be around 150km if not less when warranty ends… Expensive replacement

  • Come on Eneloop, hurry up and release an EV!

To me, it's a great looking little car. Much better design than the BYD Dolphin Premium, and considerably cheaper.

Never considered an EV before but as a second family car, this fits the bill.

    • +3

      Should've gone to specsavers.

  • Does it have an ANCAP yet? It looks pretty unsafe.

    • +1

Sixth image (7th if you count the header one) on the page linked states '5 Star ANCAP Rating'

  • The movie Fifth Element called. It wants it's car back.

  • With all due respect I hate EVs of any kind

    • +4

I dond understand all the hate EV's get. I mean seriously, what's not to love? Is it the lack of charging infrastructure, high insurance price, exploding batteries, expensive tyres, mundane driving experience, made by the CCP, heavy weight, higher risk of exploding and burning your house down, elitest syndrome, placebo effect of saving money when insurance + tyres + fastcharging + repairs all cost much more, god awful looks and you cant forget in 10 years these will all be disposable junk.

      • A lot of the car enthusiasts despise EVs. I'm guessing it's either change, too techy and the feeling it's different is what sways them. To them it's a tech product that pretends to be a car, rather than a car with new tech.

    • Been car shopping recently, and noticed that WA has super unreasonable on-road costs too. Victoria seems like a bargain in comparison once you start looking at vehicles in the $60k+ category. Was something like $2000 more!

    EV is a scam

    Elon is an original scammer

    Smooth fraudsters

The only way EV works is if it takes the same amount to charge as to fill up a full fuel tank at servo.

    • huh

    • +14

      Username checks out

    • The only way EV works is if it takes the same amount to charge as to fill up a full fuel tank at servo.

Thats as poorly thought out as someone arguing; "The only way internal combustion engines work is if they fill themselves up while you sleep"

      Both equally stupid claims.

      • -2

Yeah , time is precious . Imagine being a clown waiting in line to charge your EV when a million others cars need charging and they take forever to charge at the moment. Goodluck . You are on ozbargain so……..time is not precious only thing precious is to save $1.

        • +1

Sorry, are you suggesting there's a line to recharge in your own driveway ? Who else is in that line ? Why don't you just tell them to leave ?

  • +3

They're taking over and this site with it's clientele will be assisting them of course, we know where the true loyalty lies!

  • +1

When I fiest starting using Ozbargains it was simply about the bargains.

Now it seems it is more about who can arhue the most even when their lohic is flawed.

C'mon people.. Let us do better here.

    • +1

Yeah it’s like clockwork. Average deal = 20 comments. EV deal = 200+ comments. People venting their opinions and vitriol. This is partially why I’m a bit over it these days.

    • +5

Digging down through the comments to find actual information on the deal is getting tiring nowadays.
If I wanted to read your 'I won't buy Chinese' and "I hate EVs' comments I would go to the forums.( well, I won't, but you get my intent).

I'm starting to wonder if people are actively trying to turn this place into another Whirlpool so they can go to another site to complain about "OzBargain is not what it was" - or did we inherit the Whirlpool rejects?

      • +1

Not really, you often only see long comments when the deal is related to a EV or graphic card or gaming PC / Laptop. Which may reveal the user profile of ozbargain.

      • On Whirlpool, cashless topic is the hot topic. On here EV always riles people up.

        Forums/website attract certain characteristics.

  • I don’t have any experience with faux leather seats. Is it made from plastic? Does that mean it’ll be uncomfortable on hot days?

    • I suspect it's much like that material you get on the cheaper office chairs, which seems to degrade and peel after a few years? Leather seats (genuine or faux) in general are pretty bad in hot weather, when you compare with cloth material or some kind of microfiber / alcantara seats which don't retain heat the same way. I suppose the biggest upside is, they're easier to clean if the kids spill liquids in the car.

    • Wife's 14yr old car has synthetic leather seats.
Warm if in the sun like leather, but havent worn at all.

  • Genuine question, there's quite a bit shit talk around the safety of these Chinese cars, but they seem to be getting 5 star ANCAP safety ratings (like this GWM). How? I've been considering one of these cars, but don't want to risk my family's safety if there really is an issue.

    • -6

Ancap doesn't test for fires , why would you put your family in this crap ? Get a nice 4wd , sturdy, safe , effective

      • +3

that's well and good until facts get in the way..ICE are 60x more likely to catch fire than EVs

        • -7

          Lol, no theyr not

          • +8

@botchie: My apologies, you are absolutely right, I should have asked for a baseless opinion from a random stranger on the internet before looking up actual stats and studies.
            https://www.mynrma.com.au/electric-vehicles/basics/understan….)

            • +1

@May4th: @Halc whilst you're right in the topline, the devil is in the details. The numbers are skwed if you go and look into the details. ICE cars being combustion are counted as fire irrespective of the reasoning. E.g. If i crash into a wall at 2000kmh, and the car explodes into flames, its coutned. As are theft's that are burnt out.

Also, to support your argument, its now at 100x less likely for an EV car to burn than an ICE. However when you remove all other instances and for both EV and ICE include "self combusted" its only 30x.

But here's the main thing people ignore that is, IMO, the most critical. Risk.

ICE cars need heat to combust. So when self combusting, they do this almost 100% of the time when being used. Driven. There is only one reported ICE self combusting parker in a garage in a home in the last 22 years. And that was a leaking fuel system and a random electronic device activating every hour for something (can't remeber now).

EV cars are buring in two primary areas. When driven (about 1/3) and when charging. Now, they're incredibly safe and some brands safer than others but all very safe. The issues are unknowns to people. One hit a gump and damaged the batteries. One was in an accident and deemde safe. One has had a bad charger installed. One had a power surge. Ones safety failed due to a software issue. See where I'm going, super varied and not the typical shit of EV CARS BURN. It isn't that but it is happening, albeit low risk.

1 ICE car in 22 years. 3 EV cars in Australia in 2023. In the UK they have seen EV car fires jump from 97 in 2022 to 214 in 2023. Yes, more cars now, but they didn't double in a year but the fires have.

Plus an ICE burning on the road in most (bar sever situations) allows for passengers to disembark. Very few begin to combust and explode unbeknown to the passengers.

EV cars are in homes, apartment blocks and shopping centres. The risk of death, and financial impact are far greater.

I hope more regulation happens with car charging installs. Better battery crash protection systems to save them in lower speed crashes (some cars see damage in 30kmh crashes, this is shocking). And then better safety systems. I can imagine in some countries eventually electrical fire suppression systems becoming options then mandatory to EV ownership in decades. The world will adapt to support as its here to stay. But right now, it is a risk, hence premiums increasing, although not the alarmist ones some would have you believe.

              • +1

@mxlmxlmxl: so EVs don't crash into walls? whether they self combust isn't relevant since EV cars are subject to the same environmental exposures as ICE cars. the argument doesn't make sense

                • @May4th: THen you didn't read it. No, EV cars that crash and explode are not counted as a fire. Weird, dumb and crazy, yes. But I'm not in power to make those rules. I've questioned them and had the answer of "EV cars don't have combustible fluid". THat made no sense.

However if you read what I wrote, I discounted all the noise and went purely for SELF COMBUSTED as that is the genuine issue. The rest as you say happens and isn't the risk. But a car burning because of an issue/fault/damage/lack of maintenance is an issue.

Lets do a TL:DR of the above, when cars self combust:

                  — ICE CARS BURN ON ROADS AND HARM FEW PEOPLE/NONE AND COST LESS TO INSURANCE

                  — EV CARS ARE 33x LESS LIKELY TO SELF COMBUST COMPARED LIKE FOR LIKE TO ICE, BUT WHEN THEY DO ARE TYPICALLY IN HOMES/APARTMENTS/OFFICES/SHOPPING CENTRES AND THE RISK OF DEATH AND THE SIGNIFICANT INCREASED COST OF THE SITUATION IS WORSE

                  • @mxlmxlmxl: But for those that'll jump on, this is stats from numerous reputable car sites and authorities. If you can find more accurate like for like comparisons happy to update and learn. But as of December 2023 the above is the official numbers for AUS. US don't report the same. UK has reported more than double increase.

In AUS, all the ICE cars that burned, less the car cost, cost insurance companies around $400k in damages on insurance (road repairs etc). Those 3 EV car fires caused $11m in damages (two homes and an apartment complex)

If you were an insurance company, would you consider that hirer risk when your job is to make money. So whilst the ACTUAL events are far lower, the cost and possible death risk is far higher.

    • +1

You should ask for references and citations. You’re going to end up with people spouting their opinions and misinformed ‘facts’. Heh, already some guy has suggested buying a 4WD instead. No - don’t buy something small, modern and good for the environment, buy something huge and bad for the environment. 😂

      • -4

Lol, now EVs are good for the environment, you teals are delusional
Keep reading msn and googling , you will find all the info you need

        • +2

Cars are not good for the environment.
Fossil fuel burning cars are very bad.

          • -3

@choofa: Yes I think that's probably true however the same politicians and greens supporters that are pushing EVs and nett zero are the ones that destroyed the local car manufacturers.
If we made our own cars with our own materials that we have then it would be the other way around

            • @botchie: what are you smoking? diesel? holden closed down long before EV had any sort of meaningful marketshare

              • @May4th: You are missing my point .
If you wanted clean air and reduction of global pollution then you need to cut off highest polluters , that's ship and air travel .
To do that you become as self sustaining as possible but we are anything but.
We have nett zero policy but export coal and steel by boat loads, then bring back the materials made by those minerals back by a boat again .
Then are told to buy Ev to help our pollution….if you support it you support their #climatescam

                • +4

@botchie: the anti-EV crowd always finds reasons. usually they cycle through "it's going to burn your family to death" to "good luck when you are out of range" to "it's not actually helping the environment" when refuted.

I care much less about what it does / doesn't do for global warming - they are now affordable, cheaper to run, I don't have to breath in fumes on the road or in my driveway, and I don't have to queue up at the petrol station. What's not to like? I keep an ICE SUV for family road trips. just buy the car that works for you try not take their existence like a personal insult

                  • -3

@May4th: It's hard when idiots out there preaching EVs and green energy encroach on my way of life by agreeing to this climate scam nonsense.
But you go ahead and enjoy it .

                • @botchie: You realise a huge proportion of parts in Aussie built Toyota’s, Fords and Holdens came from overseas right?

                  Sure they were assembled here.
Sure ‘some’ of the parts would have come from Aussie supplies. But a huge number of parts were still brought it from overseas - which means they came by Ship and Air.

                  • @E5TOQUE: Well yes I do and that's my point .
It's more economical, read cheaper to dig out resources, send them by boat to China, have them make the parts you need then send them back to Oz
If the clinatescam is real and we really need to cut back on emissions then you would make everything possible to negate this and make parts here .
But no , we want to fight the emissions but keep making profit for the big guys and in return little guys like us have to suffer and pay for it , shouldn't it be the other way around ?

                • @botchie: Ship travel is one of the most effecient forms of transport that exists.

        • You do realise this post is exactly the problem that was being called out ?

… and you posted it anyway ?!

Pity I won't be in the market for an EV until late 2025; but maybe that's a good thing.

    • I still prefer the BYD Dolphin Premium over the MG4.
