        • Checked both cars at the dealerships yesterday. The inside of Dolphin is nicer, has more tech features. I know MG4 drives better with its rear wheel drive, but I am only after comfortable ride in the Dolphin for daily drive.

          • @edfoo: We test drove both too and preferred the dolphin for the same reasons.

Eg blind spot isn't an option on the Excite but is standard on the dolphin.

    • +2

I'd argue the MG4 Excite 51 is the better value at around $41k on road. Smaller pack (but LFP, so charge to 100% without concern), no stupid black roof (which is the worst trend in automobiles since.. forever). Much better value for essentially the same car otherwise.

      • Yep, bought one for the kids for $37k just before the rebates ended. After packaging (associate lease) it will cost approximately $20k with 7 year warranty.

  • +1

Will the replacement battery for this cheap EV cost $40000 aka Hyundai?

  • General insights into the cars performance

Given the specifications of the GWM Ora, with a weight of 1555 kg and torque of 250 Nm, the torque-to-weight ratio is approximately 160 Nm per ton. While this is a reasonable figure, the effectiveness in climbing mountains depends on factors like slope, road conditions, and driving speed. Generally, the Ora should handle moderate mountain climbs well with its electric motor.

    Although chat-gpt suggests:
In metric units, a common rule of thumb for the torque-to-weight ratio is around 300 Nm per ton for effective mountain climbing. This is a general guideline, and actual requirements can vary based on specific conditions and the car's characteristics.

    0 to 100 km/hr in 8.3 s !

  • GWM is getting few cars out into Australia and it is cheaper, I need to consider them as a replacement.

Right now buying anything other than Toyota to 'save money' is scary. I sold my 2012 Camry Hybrid with 200,000 km for $20k in August, 5 months ago. Any other car around $35k new in 2012 with the same 200,000km would have been $2,000 - $7,000. Just shocked at Toyota's high resale value even with MASSIVE km's. I can see why, 11 years and not a single thing changed in that vehicle, even the factory 12v battery was in perfect condition at time of sale. Only things changed were the yearly oil, oil filter, air filter and at 80,000 - 100,000km spark plugs. Ran smooth as butter even after 11 years and 200,000km. Now saying that, Toyota has jacked up prices by 20% and in some cases 30% and then dealerships scalp above that another 10-20% to get one delivered within '3 months' or else in the 1 - 2 year waiting list you go. This is why, Chinese car manufacturers are doing so well now in the $25k - $45k bracket. Nothing against them, GWM has 7 years warranty, solid cars from 2020 model year and on. But make sure you understand that the $15,000 - $20,000 saved now will somewhat balance off come resale time.

    • +2

That just not true at all lol. Jump on carsales, there are 1,979 2012 cars with 200,000km+ for sale and 1,663 are over $10,000

If you want some cherry picked examples, 2012 Commodores were under 35k new are still over 10k now even with 300,000km. Most Mazda's and Ford Territory's as well.

Sure ya Camry might have a little better resale but if you wanna MinMax car ownership just buy a 10 year old Honda.

    • +2

Mate there are 2 options . One is you either have a car or you don’t . Resale value after 10 years is the last thing you have in your mind specially at jacked up prices Toyotas sell these days ! Just saying .

toyota is slowly losing the respect & recognition it once had, I was considering buying RAV 4 cruiser but I may buy BYD Seal or Tesla in the future.

    • When I was looking for a Toyota Camry , I found most were overpriced. I ended up buying a Lexus GS300 for $2000 less with 160,000 kilometres on it. Go figure. That was 8 years ago.
Before the price hikes came in I bought Lexus RX 330 for $6500 with 205,000 and always serviced with a wad of service invoices. The RAV 4 are way more then that.

    • Any other car around $35k new in 2012 with the same 200,000km would have been $2,000 - $7,000.

Yeah i don't thing thats right. There isn't much 2012 and newer in the 2-7k range.

Not suggesting they don't have good resale and build though.

  • I rather get the MG, better looking than this cat in my opinion.

  • Get a e-bike for grocery shopping. ;)

    • Don't forget the poncho for the rain … and the parka for the cold … and lots of suntan for the rest!

  • Actually not bad at all… anyone got experience with haggling even further on this one? Or any owner experiences?

  • I have yet to see an Ora on the road, yet Atto 3 and MG4s are a common sight now. Heck, even seen a Dolphin and Seal. But the Ora? Zero. They must be getting a bit desperate and dumping the price.

    • There's a blue one parked around where I live. It's cute.

    • I've seen a fair few in Melbourne.
Some security companies are using them as their cars now too.

  • +2

Cannot stop shaking my head about so many: "how ugly it looks" … because those garden-shed styled pickup trucks, 4X4 and most SUVs they have all won beauty contests, don't they!
    Pleeease!

    • Interesting review. Sounds like a reasonably good car is ruined by bad software

  • Just do your due diligence on any EV.
Most car manufacturers are increasing hybrid cars and cutting back on EV and in some cases shutting down factories.
People that do 5 minutes of research won't touch one

Look at car sales.com and the depreciation on an MG Ev is massive with plenty for sale. But the shocker is how many there are in the breakers !

    • -3

One of the biggest problems is the batteries. You can get Apple or Samsung to put in a new battery on a $2000 smartphone for $150 but these car manufacturers want us to pay insane amounts just for replacing the traction battery.Obviously people will be reluctant to buy an old EV.

      • This hasn't been true for a very long time, reconditioned packs exist cheaply, and modern packs are losing like 1 percent a year.

    • Apmost every point made in this comment is an outright lie.

      • -1

Ok , prove it with some facts. Car sales.com don't lie. It's not only the battery. An Australian motorist driving an out of control MG EV needed police assistance to stop his car. He was told to run it in to the back of a police van.
Fact is that EV's aren't ready yet. Remember self driving cars ? How many are on the road ? Not one yet.

        • So that was a scottish driver, one time : https://www.carscoops.com/2023/10/runaway-mg-ev-kidnaps-driv…

How many trucks have lost their brakes on downhill stretches and killed people? Faults happen, rarely, to almost any make and class of vehicle.

There's about 100 billion of dollars of investment going into building just battery factories, in just America for EV's.

            Tesla's aren't allowed in China's CBD' s .

A mine that was supposed to start this year as been put on hold. This is a lithium mine.
Lithium prices have tanked over 30 %.

            • @Wombat cave:

A mine that was supposed to start this year as been put on hold. This is a lithium mine.
Lithium prices have tanked over 30 %.

Thats a really really poor argument.

You cant just assert the price of lithium and the viability of a mine means anything about the long term production of EVs. They may just have been undercut by other lithium production coming online. More production often leads to falling prices.

If you are going to make claims like "Most car manufacturers are increasing hybrid cars and cutting back on EV and in some cases shutting down factories." Back that up with actual data, not just assertions and guesses.

Remember self driving cars ? How many are on the road ? Not one yet.

Musk being a moron is a separate issue. Yep, full self drive isnt ready for the public yet, that doesn't mean electric cars are not.

There are actual working self drive cars but that is completely meaningless point as to ICE vs electric.

            • +1

@Wombat cave: Ive literally linked you to multiple article's proving that it wasnt. Go back to your cooker facebook groups mate.

There are fully self driving cars on the road and available for use in multiple countries, including America. Search waymo on YouTube for just one example. Actually here's a link. Apparently you can't read well, maybe you can watch: https://youtu.be/PWOpMxbkf4A?si=T002S3OVkUxVz3fg

Self driving trucks have been trialled in Australia, on our roads, and done quite well.

              • -2

@Ademos: The shit that people believe. Why are Teams and Trains still being driven by humans ? These are on TRACKS! These would be the most logical to convert. But there aren't any except in the mining industry.
Right now you can NOT but a self driving car anywhere in the world ! That is a fact. EV's need another 10 to 15 years to be viable mean while only fools buy them. Look at Tesla's , all are selling below market value. The intelligent people know the facts.

                • @Wombat cave: Train's aren't still being driven by humans. A metric shitload of trains in Australia are also automated. Here's just one 1500km example : https://www.railjournal.com/in_depth/rise-machines-rio-tinto…

It's already happened passenger trains elsewhere, and will here too. That's why the new stations are having individual platform door gates installed.

It's just not politically popular to wipe out an entire industry and it's jobs overnight, but it's coming.

Right now you can NOT but a self driving car anywhere in the world !

Yes you can. It's called a Waymo. It won't be long until private persons can buy one, but they exist and they are on roads. So your original statement was horse shit. Cope.

Look at Tesla's , all are selling below market value.

Tesla's been reporting net profits for some time now. Literally billions. God you talk a lot of crap.

You are so, so far behind the times boomer.

                  • -1

@Ademos: Get your head out of the ground mate. Show me a self driving that I can today in Australia.
Huge trains in mining property have been driverless for years but are still controlled by an operator in an office miles away. That's not driverless. They just moved the driver.
Fools like you are needed to keep this industry going. But there aren't enough .
How would you like it if your house value dropped 30% in one year? Well used Tesla's have. But the idiots are still buying them
                    More money then sense .

                    • @Wombat cave:

still controlled by an operator in an office miles away.

Not until intervention is required, no, they aren't. Why do you lie like this? There isn't a chance that you researched that statement before making it.

How would you like it if your house value dropped 30% in one year? Well used Tesla's have.

Every new car in history has depreciated that fast, and if you aren't buying a tesla via novated lease and saving like half it's cost up front then you're a moron. These may all be new words to you though, I'll give you another decade to catch up.

The worlds changing. Don't be scared. Or be scared. Nobody cares.

                      • @Ademos: The only lease agreement I would go with is when I worked at Holden. A SS 6.0 litre manual for $120 a week . The only thing I paid for is petrol .
Every lease today is a scam.
Google it mate . Fact . Avoid all lease agreements.

                      • @Ademos: Perhaps it would help if you weren't so bloody patronising.

Why do you keep conflating these 2 completely separate things together?

The ability to self drive is a completely separate issue to that of ICE vs EV.

You keep acting like people only buy EVs because they mistakenly think they can self drive. It's absurd.

Some developing countries are being flooded by even cheaper and nastier EV's from those state-owned government-subsidised manufacturers. Most of them wouldn't meet safety standards in other countries.

  • +2

Why would they not add Android Auto in this? Lol

  • Anyone know how many cycles the batteries in these things can do?
I'm waiting for these Chinese EVs to come down to 25k-ish, that will make it more viable.

      • +1

I realize you're full time clown but if serious tell me how I'd be scammed based on 7 years unlimited km warranty and the cost of petrol over that time being a higher km driver. I generally purchase $7-$10k used ICE cars and do approx 50,000 kms per year. In 7 years I'll drive 350,000 kms.

        • The warranty is only as good as manufacturer. The dealer has to deal with them on your behalf. If Hyundai are being total arseholes about warranty claims what would MG be like ?
7 years is worth jack shit if they refuse to fix it.
By the way , the worst offender here is Tesla.
Plenty bof well documented claims all over the internet. You would have to be totally ignorant to miss them.

          • @Wombat cave: As you say the dice is rolled with all manufacturers which includes ICE makers.

    • No one really knows and numbers will always be skewed by damaged cars.
But if the LFP batteries have come from a reputable manufacturer they should be good for at least 3000 cycles. I doubt the battery will be your biggest issue with this car

      • According to my calculations based on 3000 cycles the battery could theoretically do 1M km.

        • +1

Yeah and possibly even more. There is a lot of talk about them being million mile batteries, but it will take years to see how they really end up. GWM currently uses CATL batteries so they’ll be very good.

      • All the Samsung battery recalls paints a different picture. It was sad to watch huge battery packs being shredded.
But this company is "much better than Samsung".

    • If you have access to novated leasing it is already in that range , consider all the tax and GST savings.

If you not aware the FBT free scheme for EV, please handle in your ozbargain badge…:)

  • VIC, where everything is expensive and we tax you more whenever we feel like.

  • Well, just a quick glance at the photos and we know why its 36k, its half the quality of a standard car. might as well get a yaris and wait to get hit by a prime mover.

  • +1

They’re finding it hard to move stock, hence the discount. I’d wait for a while for better deals from known brandsif you’re so keen on EVs as there will be more options this and next year.

    • I actually made the call that EV price would fall more than 12 months ago when I saw lithium tank.

But I’ll also make this call, this price for this car won’t get any cheaper in the next 12 months. This is as cheap as it’ll get

      • @cloudy what's your view on tesla power walls - should I buy one now , or wait :D

        • +1

Are you buying it because you think it’ll be a good return on your money? Cause from my maths, for my own home, I don’t think any home battery is worth it

  • It's cute, but I can't help but wonder who would buy the GT over the Ultra. $3100 for cosmetic upgrades and front cross traffic alert which you could really just do with your OEM sensors at the top of your head. They've painted the brake calipers red and put on some different wheels. For that price you could put on a proper big brake kit or paint them yourselves and throw on some actual sweet flow formed rimz while you're there.

    • Or a good fold up E bike.

  • It confuses me when EV manufactures don’t advertise the battery chemistry in their vehicles… It completely changes the ownership experience. Surely GWM recognises that not all “lithium ion” batteries are built the same.

  • +1

So after all this did anyone actually buy one? Lol.

    • +2

I saw one on the road.. driven by a mid aged caucasian male. fess up which one of you was it?

  • +1

I bought one! Picking up tomorrow hopefully
