  • What are the like for actually preserving?
"WARNING!: Not suitable for direct contact with boiling liquid. This jar needs to be preheated gradually before any hot liquid is added"

Surely thats just so the glass doesnt crack by rapidly changing the temp.

      • To do jar preserving you do have to introduce boiling liquid, even if it's gradually heating up…

No you don't, there are other ways of sterilising jars without using boiling water in the jar

@spaceflight: Yep, Metabisulfite does the trick, ask any homebrewer. Or bleach, ask any grandmother

So gradually heat jar before adding boiling liquid….As it says in the instructions

          • @Irribotz: It says don't add boiling liquid at all, which would be a separate instruction to gradually heating it up. The other comments about sterilising however, are more useful.

The question for me is are they more fragile than common reused glass jars.
I've done plenty of preserving by boiling jars or oven 150C for 15 minutes.
Why use other products when you can use heat? the produce has to be heated anyway.
I make home brew and don't use Metabisulfite.

    • If you put boiling water into ANY jar that is not preheated it will crack.

  • Can this be used as a drink bottle? I want to try to stay away from polypropylene bottles as much as possible.

I mean, any receptacle can be used as a drink bottle, but this would be pretty heavy and the lid would make it a bit impractical to drink out. Although, if you have large hands and a large mouth, I'm sure it will be fine.

I've been using these sorts of bottles for desk water for years, they're great. https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/433972

Why not a metal one so it can't shatter?

      • I don't think I've ever dropped a glass or bottle on the floor. Metal bottles can have a polypropylene coating to protect it and I find that metal bottles have calcium/lime scale build up which is difficult to clean.

I would choose metal over poly, but for my use case I prefer glass.

        • Metal bottles can have a polypropylene coating to protect it

Much more likely on aluminium due to the reactivity
It's not needed on stainless steel bottles.

I find that metal bottles have calcium/lime scale build up which is difficult to clean.

A small amount of vinegar and a shake will clean it off.
